I don't think they paid a 3rd round pick to sit Schenn right?

McCabe-Brodie
Rielly-Schenn
Gio-Liljegren
Gus-Timmins
Doesn't mean they won't keep Holl.
The guy from the Caps will be gone I would think.

Friedman’s theory is that Gustafson is there in case Rielly gets injured. That is,bannoffensuve defenseman who could quarterback the power play.
Interesting, never heard that.

Makes some sense, but by that logic wouldn’t Holl be our defensive d backup. That would leave Timmins on the outs and I doubt that. Also, I really think Liljegren could sub in effectively on the powerplay, but to get to a place where we’d feel comfortable doing that in the playoffs, he would have needed to be given some reps there.

Personally there was really no reason to go out and acquire Gustafsson or Schenn. Adding McCabe and subtracting Sandin was more than enough.

Rielly - McCabe
Brodie - Liljegren
Giordano - Timmins/Holl

OR

McCabe - Brodie
Rielly - Liljegren
Giordano - Holl/Timmins

I’m hoping Schenn can actually come in here and be an upgrade on Holl surprisingly but we’ll see if that happens.

Actually, furthering my own thought here, it is interesting that I noticed Liljegren on the 2nd powerplay unit last night. That could just be, and likely is, a biproduct of moving Sandin out, but either way it’s a positive development for Liljegren. I really do think he can be a minute munching, all situations D.

Give him some more reps on the PP unit 2 for the remainder of the seasons and playoffs and next season I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets reps on PP unit 1.

Boston gets even harder to play against. Nice they brought in a guy who can score.

Our bottom six still won’t be able to put a puck in the net.

He needs to improve his puck moving to beat out Rielly.

The PP2 role will certainly be vacant if Gustafsson isn't here to stay. Although Giordano played slightly more than Liljegren last night on that unit, I could see the latter largely taking on that role the rest of the way. While doing so might come at the cost of Liljegren's PK role, the addition of McCabe provides cover for that.

That was my theory. If Rielly gets hurt, we don’t have a natural QB PP. Sure, Gio or Liljegren could, but Gustafsson provides a better option.
