I'm most surprised by Washington "selling" (Smith is at least an NHLer) while they're still within reasonable distance of a playoff spot (not that such a hope is being impeded by Boston in any significant way, shape or form - unless they end up meeting in the first round???). Boston obviously did quite well, at least for the here and now.

While the numbers are not super nice, Svetlakov is an underrated pickup for BOS as well. Better than Pillar anyways.

Also don't count out Smith getting dealt either. Teams were apparently interested in him, and if WSH eats some money either by retaining or taking back a contract, he may fit on some playoff teams' 4th lines.

My point is we should not have traded for rentals given what we were starring at. Can we afford to move assets with nothing to show for them ?? Hence we need to get out of the Atlantic or resign them. It just got tougher today.
So your logic is, because there are good teams in the Eastern and in our division, the team should just stay pat and do nothing until the league is easier?

You want to win the cup, your going to have to win 4 rounds against good teams no matter what the year is, you don't shy away from making deals because your division is tough.

You are right but you also have to know when to hold them and when to fold them IMO. Preferred the trade of we could get two runs at it with ROR.

Okay let's just wait for the Atlantic to become a bad division, should be any year now surely
Keep pissing away assets and you will be on the outside looking in. Can't wait.

Wouldn't be shocked to see the same thing with the Islanders and Mayfield/Varlamov, but they may also look at going after a guy like Jeannot at the same time.

I think PIT are still buyers.

Ottawa will probably go hard after Chychrun, and may just get him, but will probably also sell any UFA other than Talbot and Hamonic.

Hypothetically - If we wanted to move Kerfoot and Holl at the deadline what could we get for them (individually)?

Kerfoot for a 3rd?
Holl for a 4th?

Heck, Edmonton might even trade a 2nd and 3rd for both of them....

I'd be shocked to see Lou turn into a seller. I wager anything that won't happen...they're still very much in the wild card race, after all.

Cap charge is higher on ours.
Ok, good point.

McCabe + Lafferty or Ekholm + Jeannot

Need one or the other Dubas. Somehow someway

Ok, good point.

Don't think it would be as much of a sell off as much as a hybrid type thing with more than just this year in mind.

Move Mayfield, use his assets to get someone else with control and more of an impact ability on offense.

Hence, Jeannot.

Probably won't move Varlamov or Parise for short of an overpayment, which is fine. They can compete just as well without Mayfield as they can with him, especially if they still choose to go after non-rental improvements.

I mean the big dick move is Ekholm + Jeannott. The problem with Jeannot is we have no idea if they value him as the player he was last year or this year, and we have much fewer picks to deal from now. 25% retention on Ekholm is 4.7 ish, Jeannot is 850k. Ekholm has 3 more years, makes it pretty hard to fit him in and consider a ROR extension. This year they could do it if they sent Holl and Kerfoot ($5.5M), but they'd be real tight extending ROR if he wanted anything north of $5M. I suppose they could trade Brodie or Murray in the offseason to absorb Ekholm. Doable IMO.

Based on the trade bait board. My wishlist. Only Crouse would command a 1st or cost another asset rather kept. Everyone else should be reasonable. They need some more pricks.

Crouse/Jeannot/Barbashev/Lafferty at forward

Gudas/Schenn/McCabe/Soucy/Seeler on D

Cool to see Boston and Washington copy our trade structure step by step.

What a loser mentality. A bit ironic really.

Yeah better keep every pick to get as much chance of possible to get player like kerfoot, jarnkrok or whatever

The funniest thing is most of the time those same person who will be 1st to come and blame leafs still loosing in playoff
