Well, the analytics say you're wrong, and from my eye test, I think he's a fine bottom pairing defenseman.

He's over used and overpaid, but I'm getting a little sick of the hate he gets. I honestly just want him traded so we can watch him turn things around. Just like Ghost is doing in Phoenix. Run out of town on a rail and suddenly a hot commodity when used properly.

Yip, if he plays on the bottom pairing under 8 min a game I think he can be passable. The problem is the big minutes, against top lines and he's paid too much.

Zaitsev for Myers sounds great this year, but next season his cap hit would impair our ability to resign Zub. Myers with 2 million retained would cost a prospect. It would give Vancouver cap flexibility if they buy out Zaitsev - but then they have a hole to fill, so likely Lassi or JBD goes the other way.

I think we just have to give JBD and Lassi a shot. Wait for the new year to add another piece or two.

Chychrun had a setback in his recovery and will be out longer, so a trade seems even less likely now.
Ya, heard that on NHL Network yesterday afternoon as well. Chychrun had an appointment with his doctor and it didn't go well. He's expected to be out at least another 2 weeks, but it sounded like they were acknowledging it could be longer as well.

Chycrun won’t get dealt until he is healthy. The team wants the max return and other teams are afraid of giving up assets for a damaged player

I agree. The salary commitment this year and next, more so next, is the issue, not him occupying the 6/7 d spot.

I agree. Zaitsev is certainly not a stud defender or even close, but he's probably an adequate and average 6/7 defender. He's definitely overpaid in that role. My guess is that they intend him to play around 25 games give or take a few games, and limited 3rd pair type minutes in those games. You can't blame a person with that kind of usage for a team's woes. It's illogical.

People just need scape goats I guess. No idea why, but it's "a thing". In part, I think it becomes a tool to explain things that people don't understand. Blaming it on someone/something just helps them cope. Also, with group think and social pressure at work, it can be perceived as a cool thing to do.

I'll agree with adequate 7. We play 6 other guys.

Canucks get Ethan Bear for next to nothing.

I would have done the same deal and just sent Zaitsev to the AHL.

Ethan Bear looked really bad in Carolina. I watched some early games (preseason and season) and his coverage and gap control wasn't good. Still he would have been better than Zaitsev.

Analytics say Zaitsev is a good defender?

He will never be a hot commodity. He looks bad regardless of pairing

Well, I mentioned a 6D for about 25 games, so not a huge difference. Therefore, that would make him basically a 7D. Generally, the fewer games, the better. But, whatever I suppose.

Hopefully we find a way of moving him without it costing too much which was the real or main reason for giving him a few games. The other reason would be as an injury replacement. What I'm really hoping for is that JBD can step in for a few games and be the injury replacement though. I'm all for buying him out, but his $2.833 against the cap next year will hurt especially if the ceiling is only $83.5 m.

Ethan Bear, 2.2M for a week or two, big pass.

Ethan Bear at 1.8 due to retained salary for the rest of the season. Providing stability on the right side by keeping Zaitsev out of the line up and not forcing JBD/Thomson to play if they are not ready. Retain half of that 1.8 at the deadline and likely flip him for more than a 5th.

Analytics say that he is burdened with a lot of bad zone starts, bad goaltending, and compares favourably in those circumstances to other bottom pairing guys.

Over the course of many seasons, overuse on bad teams makes him look worse than he is. At 4.5M he's an albatross. At 1.2M on a bottom pair, on a decent team once his contract is up? Who knows, maybe he'll be in high demand.

Vancouver ownership doesn't want a rebuild and will do whatever it takes to be competitive, Carolina should've gotten more from them, but at least they got something from a player that isn't a part of their plans. I really hope the Sens can take advantage of a situation like that and move Zaitsev, pay the 2nd round pick or whatnot to move him, and use his cap space to get actual D help.

Bear isn’t good, he makes terrible decisions with the puck, think Zaitsev at a lower cost. It’s time.to see if JBD or Thomson or both are ready.

the problem is where is the help coming from? What assets are we using to acquire said help? Especially on the right side?

My opinion has sort of changed (vs what I said in the Zub thread).

I think the org sees that Zub is gone for "weeks," and Norris is gone for "months," so the season (although a great development one) is looking like it may be a wash... So, keep JBD and Thomson in the AHL to really learn what they're doing. Thomson has 2 goals and is -4, while JBD has 1 assist, +4. The team sits in first place (although it's only been 6 games) in their division, so why not let them log huge minutes and get a playoff run under their belts?

Call them up after the trade deadline once Belleville has secured a playoff spot, then send em back down for AHL playoffs.
