It's in the last couple of games where we're manhandled physically that we realize we're missing a guy like Nick Paul. I was still ok with trading him when we did, but we do need players like him. Our top 3 lines are soft as toilet paper.

Hopefully our younger guys (Stutzle, Pinto) mature a bit physically, and we eventually add guys like Greig, Crookshank and Boucher, and we'll be a bit harder to play against, but right now we're going to suffer against physical teams.
They know were soft and just launch at us

Maybe we should be in the market for a temporary 3rd line centre now. Our bottom-six doesn’t look as neatly good with Pinto and Kasty moving up.

His contract was too long or something tho?

This complaint drives me crazy.

Look at what Pittsburgh acquired, with a focus on the main piece, keeping in mind that they are a team that is trying to compete now and in the immediate future. and tell me what we can offer that clears the bar.

If we are beating the criteria of:
- Ample NHL experience, including in the top 4, with decent success
- Waiver eligible
- D

Brannstrom falls short on 2/3 of those criteria. Thomson & JBD fall short on one (the most important one). Suggesting, "oh, just improve the pick" shows a misunderstanding of what Pittsburgh was trying to accomplish... the pick was an after-thought, a negotiation - the trade was about replacing Marino with a cheap, waiver-eligible (or clear, ready-to-go, young top 6) D.

So, are we offering Sanderson? Or did NJD just offer a better piece than we were able to?

The reason Pittsburgh wanted Ty Smith is that he was waiver eligible, Brannstrom is not. Pittsburgh May very well like Brannstrom but there are always many factors that aren’t obviously apparent initially.

EDIT: my post is redundant once I fully read yours. My bad.

All good.

To expand on why waiver exemption was important, acquiring Brannstrom rather than Smith means that at least one of Brannstrom, Ruhwedel or PO Joseph would have been placed on waivers. Maybe Ruhwedel goes through waivers unclaimed... but its important to note that he played 85 games for Pittsburgh last year. Hardly an afterthought, and hardly a guarantee that Brannstrom would/could have done the same for them.

Since Drysdale is going to be done for the majority of the season, I'd see if we can trade them Zaitsev and some sweetener for Derek Grant. We drafted Grant and its time to bring him back, he has a bit of physicality in his game and we could get a lot out of him in a third line role. He scored 15 goal last year and can play centre and right wing.

Ducks have the capspace for Zaitsev and its another tank season for them. They don't have the greatest winger prospect pool, see if Zaitsev, Sokolov or Jarventie, and a 2nd can get er done.

Jarventie out for a month or so.

What players on the Sens are untouchable and what are the Sen’s biggest needs?

Biggest need is mobile and defensive RHD.

Nothing is truly untouchable for the right price, but realistically untouchable:
Pinto, Batherson, Stutzle, and Sanderson and that's it.

Greig is a prospect that requires a really good piece coming back, but he's not untouchable. Everyone else is fair game.

None are untouchable, just like Gretzky.

The Sens biggest needs include a top 4 Defenseman to play with the top 3: Chabot, Zub and Sanderson. That would move Hamonic down to 3rd pair where he is better suited. That would also require Zaitsev to be traded to address the salary budget and cap issues. Having Hamonic, Brannstrom and Holden as 5, 6 & 7 D would be better.

Biggest need is mobile and defensive RHD.

I don't know how or why you missed Tkachuk in your list.

That’s fair, I was bouncing some ideas around on a Pinto to Colorado trade around something involving D. Toews, however if he falls into the category of nearly untouchable possible something around Norris to Colorado in the off-season might be worth exploring.

The Sens prefer RHD, but I would absolutely do Norris for Toews. Toews is elite.
