Is still don't understand the idea of trying to build a roster around a coach.

Seems more logical to build a roster with a common well thought out strategy in mind and then find a coach who thinks in the same capacity.

If you don't understand the idea of trying to build a roster around a coach, then good on you, because it is a ridiculous concept.

Unfortunately, you just put more thought into a long term plan than Rangers management has in at minimum the last decade.

They certainly could use a direction or at least an outline. Seems to me they have a mishmash of players every year. Some fast but not big, some big but not skilled, a couple tougher guys mixed in with the extreme opposite. How do they ever expect to have an "identity" or on ice cohesiveness out of these groupings is beyond me.

Better way to put it, they do nothing extremely well as a group, they don't out fore-check, out talent, out pass, out shoot, out hit, out skate, out defend any other team. They have some players who can do some of that and then they have a distinctly different set of other players who do some of the other things but the two sets of players never can get on the same page because they don't share any common skill set.

If I were to blow this whole team up and model after a team I would build this team off of Detroit. That team is not physical but they've always had finesse. Detroit didn't tank they just drafted well with a skill mindset over anything else. They're always in the playoffs and have won their fair share of cups during their current playoff streak.

The hell with this big bad Bruins mentality, puck the puck in the ****ing net.

The problem with your statement is, those "big bad Bruins" actually do put the puck in the net.

They also have two of the most unique players in the NHL which makes it kind of hard to do it exactly like the Bruins

Still can be done but the Rangers don't really have the personnel for it anyways

The thing is, the Rangers matched up pretty well when they had Rupp, Prust, Dubinsky, Sauer, Bickel. They were extremely hard to play against.

Now they have Dorsett. It's night and day.

Pretty much. We had a nice mixture of grit and skill. Could have used a bit more skill but we weren't far off from that mold. Those were the days. Who would have thought?

I would prefer they generally went towards players who could skate. I would like more Hagelin, Kreider, McD, J Moore types. Not a whole team of Rico Fata's or anything but even some players in the bottom 6 that would make the other team work hard shift by shift just to keep up with them would be nice.

Eh, but it's not very likely they were winning anything with that lineup either, at least not with how they were coached at the time.

I agree they could use some more "sandpaper" forwards but guys like Rupp and Bickell weren't really doing a whole lot out there overall.

I mean that's fine and all...but the Red Wings even in their most recent "heydey" were led by the second best defenseman (arugably the best) of all time and a top 2-3 two way player of the generation. Thats not even addressing Zetterberg.

If the Rangers land that, by all means. Employ whatever system you want. It makes it a lot easier to ice pure "skill guys" in the mix with a foundation like that.

Not to mention, while they may not have been "the big bad Bruins" those DRW teams had grit up and down the lineup. Holmstrom, Franzen, Bertuzzi on the top 3 lines. One of the best hitting dmen of the era in Kronwall. I have nothing bust respect and awe for how the DRW play. I would love to watch that 82 nights a year in blue. I question how realistic of a goal that is without an appropriate talent level. A system is great but at the end of the day you can't shine ****.

The late 80's-90's Red Wings and the Red Wings into the 2000's had some of the same players but they were like two very different teams. The former bunch would win Cups eventually too and had guys like Probert, Kocur and McCarty. Most importantly they had guys like Steve Yzerman and Niklas Lidstrom but Probert just for one could be a really effective hockey player and was one of the best fighters in NHL history. A kind of changing of the guard eventually with Zetterberg and Datsyuk and Lidstrom just lasted forever but not sure they would have got the same traction if it were not for the Bruise brothers pretty much at the beginning of all that.

IMO Bobby Orr--not just the best defenseman ever but the best player ever. I'd rank him above Gretzky, Lemieux, Howe, Messier, Lindros (deserves mention--for several years he was the best player in the NHL) and Crosby. Lidstrom is arguably the 2nd best d-man ever--but there would be arguments as well for the much hated in these parts Denis Potvin, Ray Bourque, Brian Leetch, Paul Coffey, Doug Harvey and a handful of other pre WWII d-men. Orr revolutionized his position--the only other player I could think to say that of was Wayne Gretzky.

Meanwhile, New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather continues to shop defenceman Michael Del Zotto.

Toronto is among the teams with some interest, but the expected return of a young defenceman may be too steep for the Leafs. It's believed the Rangers would prefer a right-handed shot on the blue line, so Cody Franson is a likely target for New York as well.

Sources say the Ottawa Senators are also still in the mix, although the sudden and impressive emergence of rookie Cody Ceci may have cooled the Sens' interest. And providing Ceci can maintain his play, the Senators may be willing to move either Gryba, Corvo or Weircoch to one of the many teams in the market for a defenceman.

I'm baffled about this. I didn't want MDZ traded when he was playing poorly on the right side and getting scratched every couple of games. Trading him now? He's been our best defenseman not named McDonagh ever since Staal went down with the concussion. Moving him now would just be stupid.

Thats ridiculous.

Designated whipping boys CANNOT play better once theyve been designated, so says HF logic.

He has been much better, McDonagh he's been our best defender ever since MDZ got back in the lineup though. Aside from maybe one game, and no just because you will vehemently disagree doesn't in fact make MDZ better.

Kulemin and franson for dz and Pyatt . Ahhhh I dunno

I'd be ok with that seeing as it's pretty much Kulemin + Franson for MDZ.

I'd like to get some picks and prospects back. I fear it's too late to really try to bolster the lineup. Grab as many picks and young players as you can and go from there.

Meh. Kulemin is a pending UFA who will probably try to cash in on the one good season he had. Franson is incredibly overrated. Not a top-pairing guy, so that puts him up against Stralman, and I chose Stralman over Franson every time. Franson will be looking to cash in as well.

I'd love Franson. Tough crease clearer.

Then again we already have McIlrath and Falk.

Looking at how Boston has assembled their blue line:

1 - Crease Clearer and point shot in Chara
1 - Stay at home defender who's defensively responsible in Seidenberg
1 - I don't know what to classify Boychuk as?
3 - Puck movers - Hamilton, Krug, Bartowski

Would love if we assembled something similar.

The crease clearer point shot will be difficult to find but I'm confident Phaneuf could fit that role well.
2 - Stay at home defenders who are defensively responsible: McDonough and Staal
1 - puck mover: John Moore
1 - Another crease clearer, no point shot included - McIlrath
1 - I don't know how to classify him - Stralman

We need guys who can help our forwards. Phaneuf (if he signs here), Staal, McDonough, McIlrath - already have 4 guys who can't don't specialize in puck movement. Moore regressed since last year, I don't know why. Stralman lost his offense to become more defensive.

Like Stralman, but if we get Phaneuf he's kind of obsolete. We need to target a guy who can move with the puck well - who can make great outlet passes.

Phaneuf-McDonough
X-Staal
Moore-McIlrath

X needs to be a good puck mover. Franson isn't that, unfortunately. We could use his grit though.

Uh...what? I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. If you are arguing that McDonagh has been better than MDZ, then I'm not sure why. I stated that from the outset ("our best defenseman not named McDonagh"--as in McD is clearly the best, but since Staal went down, MDZ has been the clear 2nd best).

Was it just a miscommunication or were you saying something different (honest question)?

I think you're confusing Franson with another player, because he is a puck mover and not a crease clearer in any sense of the phrase.

Franson is not a crease clearer at all.

he adds size but another player that has size and is not that physical type of a player or a crease clearer. he would be booed within the 1st 2 weeks as a Ranger...
