And I don't care how free-agent weary this fanbase is, I would break the bank for Dion Phaneuf. He's the kind of really good free agent that usually doesn't make it to FA. I go all in for him.

This mentality is the cause of our problems. Phaneuf is not the answer. All he would accomplish is continuing the mediocrity. We need to take our lumps and draft some real talent into this organization.

But still, it seems like he wants to be on a winning team tho

I'd think everybody does, but again it's not why he left.

Kinda tough to get him to come back probs, seeing as he's playing on the best team in the 3rd best team in the KHL .

I dunno, it's a thought if he'd come back, obviously he's never playing for Winnipeg again, at least.

At least we will have a secret weapon against Winnipeg

What's Phaneuf not the answer to? Assuming we actually go ahead and trade off Girardi, Callahan, etc, who's replacing Girardi and co's minutes? He wouldn't be a band-aid in this case, and he's the exact kind of player you want on a team you want to contend. A multi-dimensional guy who can lead and play at a high level. He wouldn't be similar to the other FA signings this team has done.

If for some absolutely brain dead reason we replace Callahan, Girardi, etc with more veterans, then I wouldn't sign him. But I'd like to think Sather isn't completely braindead.
