Beaulieu reminds of me of a poor man's Kris Letang. Great physical gifts, very flashy with the puck, a nice slapper from the point, but he has the hockey sense of an eggplant. Letang was billed as the PPQB of the future here in Pittsburgh when Gonchar left, but he's been absolutely abysmal in that role. So much so that Paul Martin managed to snag it from him quite easily. He has no vision to create offense on his own.
While that all might seem very strange given his production, his production is largely a result of playing in a highly potent offensive system. Letang is what I call a "complimentary offensive defensemen." He's perfectly suited to play with elite offensive talent, but as a stand-alone product, I think he's pretty average.
I wouldn't necessarily be heartbroken if we added Beaulieu, but I'm just not particularly high on him. My projection is he tops out as a 2nd pair defender who can be the 2nd piece on the blueline on the 1st PP unit. It's okay, but I think we can do better if we're gambling on futures.
I think Cody Ceci in Ottawa has higher upside, personally.
