Here's what Eklund said:

On the Habs and Rangers...

The names I am hearing are Del Zotto going to Montreal with Diaz and a prospect (e3) returning to NY. The Avalanche also have plenty of interest in Del Z...but are playing it very close to the vest.

Maybe it's Tenordi? :D

There isn't a prospect in their system I'd do that deal for. Thank god Eklund is worthless and it'll never happen.

Diaz is a group III in the summer.

No issue if a top prospect is the main piece in the DZ trade like McDonagh was. The Rangers get back a D to take the place of DZ for the rest of this season as part of the deal. This season should be a transition year. Let the young players like Kreider establish himself as a NHL player. Hopefully Miller gets that opportunity at some point. McIlrath too. Look to trade off the group III players and some of the other restricted free agents. Refresh. Retool. Get a top pick.

My friends and I discuss trade ideas/players. Klefbom with Edmonton. DZ. The Rangers take Schultz as part of the deal. Edmonton retains the difference in cap hits. Klefbom has had a tough year in the AHL. He is a lefty and isn't an offensive guy. He doesn't fit the Rangers needs but something like that. A young player on an ELC. Can become part of the new core. Billy Beane calls it turning back the clock. He trades for a younger player will less service time.

The Rangers are reportedly after a D for Del Zotto. A top 4 D. That's not the guy in Montreal.

I like plenty of these players, and I believe they can bring something to a club in the NHL. BUT, a team like we have has about one spot for a kid like this and that spot is taken by Zucc. Had Zucc not been here, I think someone like Hemsky or Omark really would have provided us with something that we miss.

But with Zucc already here, I think it would be tough to carry both him and Omark.

I find this to be fine, but to me, there is more to Zuke than a small flashy, skilled, pass first winger. He has gotten better in his own zone. You can never have enough talent. He has the skills we are still looking for and is a cheaper alternative than some others. With the cap where it is, trades are going to be hard to come by. If they can give up little to nothing to make a deal, Edmonton would most likely want a defender close to NHL caliber, we could do that. It would add another offensive piece, who can skate. Allows them some flexibility with other players if it works out.

I wouldn't necessarily have a problem with a top prospect being the centerpiece of a MDZ trade. The issue is that Montreal doesn't have a top prospect that I'd consider a centerpiece of a deal. Beaulieu is decent, but certainly no blue chipper, IMO. I think he gets a media bump being a Habs prospect.

MDZ for Tinordi + Diaz is pretty blah trade. Not a big fan, even though I do think Tjnordi could develop into a decent player.

Now if this trade had Ellers involved somehow I would be much happier

Disagree. Beaulieu has some seriously great puck skills. If he hits his ceiling he's a #2 TWD.

However, I'm with you in that I'm not interested in any of the Habs prospects. Collberg is having a really bad year, McCarron already looks like a bust, LeBlanc just sucks, we have McIlrath who's better than Tinordi, and Charles Hudon looks okay.

The two teams just don't make good partners.

Subtitle brag? Trying to get more followers? :sarcasm:
No it was not a subtitle brag....

I just found it funny that RangerBoy brought that up the day after I tweeted that. I did some research on NHL teams production from the blueline yesterday to show how pathetic the Rangers are in that regard (spoilers: quite pathetic).

True, DZ would be a great fit for MTL, or any of the heavier teams out there. Basically DZ is the small undersized offensive D for teams that have a lot of size, and play that heavy brand of hockey.

STL, LA, MTL, TOR, VAN, PHX, BOS and the like are all teams that he'd thrive in, but none will give have a top 4 D in return.

Diaz seems like the sort of player you'd want on your team to tank with, small shifty little d-man that can move the puck when doesn't have to win a physical battle. Ideal AV type of player.

Why would Montreal trade Eller to us, especially for DZ? I saw this guy returning to us in a bunch of proposed trades yesterday. Doesn't Meeeechelle love him?

Montreal was a small team last year. Lacked physicality. They were abused by bigger teams. They just lost Parros for a 2nd time and likely for the rest of the season (his career may be over). They need grit.

We don't match up with them because we don't have grit to give.

Even if they weren't looking for grit, they're much closer to win-now mode than they are trying to stockpile younger players to develop. DZ, who is not a prospect, would need a change of scenery and he'd like take some time to adjust and develop into the player they would want him to be.

They traded for Gomez a few years back to try and push them over the edge. Now that they're back to being relatively dominant, I'd assume they want a veteran back.

The only guy who may be available that fits that bill is Girardi, and who knows if he is or isn't in the team's long term plans.

Could we maybe get Eller back for Girardi? Sure. But keep in mind that Montreal likely won't want to give up a major component to success to get a veteran player. Their move will likely have to center around picks and prospects for it to make sense.

In that case, the Rangers will probably charge a higher premium for the risk associated with prospects. Does Montreal have the prospects to match up with us? I value Girardi at a 1st rd pick and a top 3 prospect. Sather probably values him more. Does Montreal even have a top 3 prospect worth trading for? Their draft pick will be in the 20s. It's not as valuable as an upper half 1st rd pick. The prospect would need to be very enticing.

Beaulieu reminds of me of a poor man's Kris Letang. Great physical gifts, very flashy with the puck, a nice slapper from the point, but he has the hockey sense of an eggplant. Letang was billed as the PPQB of the future here in Pittsburgh when Gonchar left, but he's been absolutely abysmal in that role. So much so that Paul Martin managed to snag it from him quite easily. He has no vision to create offense on his own.

While that all might seem very strange given his production, his production is largely a result of playing in a highly potent offensive system. Letang is what I call a "complimentary offensive defensemen." He's perfectly suited to play with elite offensive talent, but as a stand-alone product, I think he's pretty average.

I wouldn't necessarily be heartbroken if we added Beaulieu, but I'm just not particularly high on him. My projection is he tops out as a 2nd pair defender who can be the 2nd piece on the blueline on the 1st PP unit. It's okay, but I think we can do better if we're gambling on futures.

I think Cody Ceci in Ottawa has higher upside, personally.

Letang's played 75.3% of Pittsburgh's PP time this season when in the lineup. For Martin it's 65.6%. So I wouldn't say he's snagged it from him.

Since Gonchar's left, Letang's stat line: 192 GP 29 G 112 A 141 Pts

Sure, he's played with good players, but abysmal? Why did Pittsburgh sign him to that big extension, then?

The salary cap is going up. Just in time for Dion Phaneuf to cash in, maybe buy a few more of those bow ties we’ve seen on 24/7.
Talks are underway between the Maple Leafs and Phaneuf’s management team to the point where both sides know where the other stands. Phaneuf is looking in the $7-8 million a year range for seven or eight years. Eight years is the maximum contract length.

I didn't say that Martin has taken away his PP time, I simply said that he stepped into the role as PP QB when Letang was unable to handle it effectively.

Like I said, the stat line looks pretty, but a powerplay quarterback he is not.

A this point, I firmly believe that they need to tank and sell in order to get up to where they need to be. I think they are missing a few key pieces and the only way to get them, will be to get the draft picks. It sucks, I know many will disagree, but they need to be bad, in order to be good. Sell off some pieces (Callahan, Girardi, Stralman, Boyle, Nash) and recoup some assets while you can.

Trade ideas:

To MON:
Brian Boyle

To NYR:
Dalton Thrower + MON 3rd '14

To ANA:
Dan Girardi

To NYR:
Sami Vatanen + ANA 1st '14

To VAN:
Ryan Callahan

To NYR:
Brendan Gaunce + VAN 1st '14 + Conditional VAN 2nd '15 (if Callahan re-signs or VAN makes it to the SC Final)

To TB:
Anton Stralman + Benoit Pouliot

To NYR:
TB 2nd '14 + TB 3rd '14

not opposed to theoretical move, esp his big salary, but prefer to keep, dep. upon return. Not sure he goes anywhere, think he has NMC

MDZ + 5th for Diaz, Tinordi, and 3rd

Girardi for Etem + Conditional 1st (2nd if he doesn't resign)

Obviously meant that since the :sarcasm: is there. It is putrid, outside of Mcdonagh. Nothing from Girardi. Nothing from MDZ. Moore has been average. Stralman same. Staal has been the worst. When they locked teams down, it was fine, but now they need to produce more.

Quick, give DelZotto an extension and a raise, then his value will be higher. I think we could get Galchenyuk and Prust for him. If we add in Noreau, we might be able to grab Emelin, too.

Was thinking any deal with the Habs would include Boyle. Boyler and Prust had some pretty good chemistry between them.

Also was thinking that Parros would be in the return, but now that the big guy is concussed yet again I'm guessing that simply won't happen.

Over the past month, the Ottawa Senators were looking to make a trade for a puck-moving defenseman. The club couldn't get close enough on any deal, as it is so difficult to make a trade in the first half of the season. (For example, the Senators inquired on Michael Del Zotto with the Rangers, but it went nowhere.)

For now, it turns out they may have found their answer from within. The call-up of 19-year-old blueliner Cody Ceci -- the team’s first-round pick (15th overall) in 2012 -- has filled that need. It’s been only three games, but his overtime goal against the Blues on Tuesday night plus his overall play is exactly what the Senators were looking for back there. Not to mention the improved play of blueliner Jared Cowen of late.

So for now, the trade target has shifted to a top-six forward, although there was nothing imminent on that front as of Tuesday.
