Can a trade happen already? I'm addicted to the refresh button lately. I just want one or two more offensive threats on this team even if it means trading the 1st round pick along with MDZ. If not two offensive threats then an offensive threat plus a Prust like player minus the injuries that happened this year.

Why is a trade necessary?

Vigneault is going to unlock the offense -- any minute now.

If we trade Del Zotto and a potential 5th overall pick, the return must be Kessel-like

A this point, I firmly believe that they need to tank and sell in order to get up to where they need to be. I think they are missing a few key pieces and the only way to get them, will be to get the draft picks. It sucks, I know many will disagree, but they need to be bad, in order to be good. Sell off some pieces (Callahan, Girardi, Stralman, Boyle, Nash) and recoup some assets while you can.

Trade ideas:

To MON:
Brian Boyle

To NYR:
Dalton Thrower + MON 3rd '14

To ANA:
Dan Girardi

To NYR:
Sami Vatanen + ANA 1st '14

To VAN:
Ryan Callahan

To NYR:
Brendan Gaunce + VAN 1st '14 + Conditional VAN 2nd '15 (if Callahan re-signs or VAN makes it to the SC Final)

To TB:
Anton Stralman + Benoit Pouliot

To NYR:
TB 2nd '14 + TB 3rd '14

Trading our 1st right now doesn't make any sense though.

Gaunce and 2 picks for a rental (even though Callahan would likely re-sign) is a pretty hefty price for a player we don't really need. Callahan is awesome and I'm a huge fan of his but if Gillis is giving up one of our higher end prospects and a first he would likely go after the elusive Moulson/Vanek type as we do have a lot of heart filled, hardworking grinders already.

Plus he has stated that he doesn't want to give up prime assets for rentals anymore (picks, high end prospects), only for players with some term on their contracts or RFAs.

Please?

I just though that with maybe the Torts connection there would be interest. Especially if he would re-sign, which I would think he would with Torts being the coach.

Rangers need to improve their speed.. how about Jannik Hansen or Nicklas Jensen from the Canucks... Hansen would be a big upgrade to whatever is on the Rangers 3rd 4th line at the moment.. if a deal with Canucks happen, those 2 should interest the Rangers... speed is also a big need for this team while not big and not fast

Oh I think he would stay as well (seeing as Vancouver is an awesome city, maybe not as cool as NYC though) with Torts and we do have some high profile Americans.

I would be fine with Gaunce (or Jensen, but I think you guys need centers, yes) OR our 1st but not both. I might go to Gaunce + 14 conditional 2nd if Cally re-signs.

Also have seen a lot of proposals to get you guys D-men. Maybe we could structure something around Edler as he's cost controlled (5M for 5yrs) and would be a nice upgrade from MDZ if you do trade him.

I really don't think the Rangers can make deals for players where they take 2 more years to make the NHL and then 2-3 years to develop. They need NHL ready prospects who at the least will be good contributors 2 years from now.

I would think Callahan would return a top prospect + 1st pretty easily at the deadline. That's all I was trying to portray. Whether that player is Gaunce or Jensen or whoever, I think the opposite team would be moving a couple of significant assets.

I'd like Edler.

Why? Did I miss another Mayan prophecy where the world is going to blow up?

This short-sightedness is not a good way to run a team. Get the best players you can. They develop as they develop.

I wouldn't mind something around Edler and Callahan (obviously have to even it out a bit). Giving up youth is tough for us because we don't really have that many higher end prospects and we're trying a small youth re-tool probably starting next season. Fills a need for both teams and Edler does have the offensive skill and passing ability to fit into AVs system.

Not really interested in Edler, don't see the point considering he's yet another LD. And he's been god awful this year.

Basically these deals look pretty reasonable to me. I like Thrower. I don't think he's developed to Montreal's expectations and he's not a big D--but he is a heart and soul player and pretty tough.

Vatanen would be a useful player as well. As would Gaunce. Teams with SC hopes looking to upgrade their playoff hopes usually give a bit more value to get guys they want. If the Rangers decide to move these vets they should do well.

I'll give you whatever you want. Let's make it happen.

I'm not sure how to value Callahan completely. Is he a legitimate top 6 guy? Or is he more of a tweener? We do have Higgins and Santorelli who have been amazing for us lately.

Not really interested in Edler, don't see the point considering he's yet another LD. And he's been god awful this year.

Well, my assumption would be that if you move MDZ you would likely want a more dynamic and adept puck-moving defenseman to replace him. I know y'all are big on moving Girardi but Edler-Girardi would be a sweet pairing.

He's been bad but the whole team was friggin' awful too up until December. He got kneed in the November Carolina game and hasn't played since (hence why his numbers look terriawful). He actually started picking up his play after Torts mentioned that he believes the ridiculous Hertl suspension messed up his game.

He's still good for 40pts a year and is a dynamic game changer when he's on. Obviously there is some risk with it but I do invite you to watch highlights of the 2010 LA series to see what he's really capable of. Not a knock on AV, but after 2011 a lot of players on our team looked like hot dog **** because I think Vigneault lost sight and went slightly off the rails with his systems.

We have an elite goalie signed to a huge contract for the next 8 years. As long as Hank is here, the Rangers are going to try to win. They are certainly not going to add players who might need 3 or 4 years to get competitive.

We need a re-tool, not a rebuild. They're very different. One serves this team a lot better than the other.

You get the best players available. Simple as that.

Thats what the Rangers have done via the free agent and trade markets and it has been an utter failure.

How about declaring and committing to an organizational plan and then targeting players that fit that plan?

Here are some prospects from teams that could have interest in Girardi, Callahan, out other expirings, etc.:

ANA: Nicolas Kerdiles (C), William Karlsson (C), Emerson Etem (RW), Sami Vatanen (D), Shea Theodore (D)

TB: Vladislav Namestnikov (C), Nikita Kucherov (RW), Adam Erne (LW), Andrej Sustr (D)

MIN: Mario Lucia (RW), Brett Bulmer (RW), Erik Haula (LW), Jason Zucker (LW), John Draeger (D)

CHI: Jeremy Morin (LW), Drew LeBlanc (C), Brandon Pirri (C), Kevin Hayes (C), Mark McNeill (C), Phillip Danault (C), Stephen Johns (D), Adam Clendening (D)

Basically these are teams that are already good and could afford to lose a prospect since their systems are deep. Didn't include their top of the line prospects, for the most part.

If you look at teams like Chicago and Anaheim, they use young talent to fill out their bottom lines. Or they might spread those young guys around depending on line chemistry. You don't see players like Pyatt, Pouliot, etc. getting 3rd line minutes.

I don't even consider it rebuilding in the slightest to sell off UFAs for prospects that are borderline ready.

you'd think MTL would be interested in Mashinter or Asham? I doubt Sather is going to deal Dorsett but maybe if they feel McI is ready to be the muscle (Although two heavyish-weights would be nice)... I think MTL as lost Parros. Poor guy got another fight related concussion.

How about Moore, Dorsett, and Brassard for Subban? :sarcasm:
