Pouliot and Miller both looked really bad when they were played on the fourth line this year. It's not as simple as just dropping guys down because it's a very specific role; they get like no offensive zone starts and they're hardly expected to score. In case of an injury, Dorsett has already proven he can play there.

Our plan with our lower UFAs is also kind of up in the air. If someone prices themselves out of here we'll need Dorsett. If not, or if we want to give Lindberg a run there, yeah, I'm sure he'll be traded.

I'd get rid of Dorsett ASAP.. 1.6M off the books for a healthy scratch. Look at the teams record without him in the lineup... And with. Trade him for cap space, Ahl depth, picks, whatever.

I say that with respect to what he brings to the table, as I am a proponent of those elements. I'd also leave 2 forward spots open next year for Miller and Fast. Those cheap ELCs are a must. Personally I'd get rid of guys that don't produce enough for their cap hit, and collect futures for them, and let some of the bottom current bottom six walk.

I for one want to fill the lineup with consistency, and cup hungry players to match the youth. This is probably unpopular with the board, but hey I haven't forgotten the lackluster effort and inconsistency of some players, and will not reward them with raises.

Nash-Richards-St.Louis
Kreider-Stepan-Zuccarello
Hagelin-Miller-Fast
Carcillo-Moore-Vitale/Engylland

McD-G
Staal-D.Boyle
Moore-Klein

Hank
Cam

I'd sign both Vitale and Engylland. Dress Carcillo/Engylland as the 13th F/D. Engylland has been playing wing all season long, and can drop back to D to kill penalties. Signing Vitale and Engylland makes the only team ahead of the Rangers in the division that much weaker. Pits with a poor PK means less points during the season.

This line up infuses youth, and more RH shots for nice mix of center icemen that can take draws and kill penalties. Oscar Lindberg can eventually replace Moore, but right now he deserves another contract. Next year's deadline Moore can earn the team a 2nd rounder since the 2015 1st isn't there.

Rangers biggest need is a top 4 RHD that provides offense, and Dan Boyle is a UFA. That is a big upgrade on Stralman, especially on term since Boyle is probably going to get a 1 year or 2 year deal at maybe $1M more than what Stralman would get as UFA.

Why say bye bye to Brassard? Consistency.
Why say bye bye to Pouliot? Consistency.

Poo has been solid since December, but he was barely an NHLer for the 1st 35 games. Nice humble guy who has been working hard, but not a winner in my eyes.

I wouldn't want a guy like Sam Gagner on this team, and feel the same about Brassard. A high skill center that doesn't produce to his skill level. Unlike some, I am taking his career's output into consideration. Brassard would cost $3.7M to float around and make excuses for his inconsistent effort. Do not want.

Brassard next season would cost 3.7
Dorsett 1.6
Pouliot with a raise 1.8

That's 7.2M off the books, and replaced by ELC's or bottom line players at around a 1-1.5. Plenty of cap space to work with under this scenario for Zucc and Kreider, and depth.

Dorsett is having the worst year of his career. No surprise when he's sustained two significant injuries in a calendar year. I'd bring him back for a year to see if he can bounce back from his injuries. He's still a very useful bottom 6 forward that can kill penalties. It just happens to be that Carcillo is playing better right now.

Really like to see Moore back. Feel Boyle is gone sadly.

Yeah I'm a big fan of big Brian Boyle. Like the person and the player, but he has a very nice payday with term waiting for him as a UFA.

Let's hope he plays like a beast down the stretch and earns himself a big money deal from some other team. Bryan Bickell got $4M a year with term because of a great playoff run, if Boyle scores 6-7 goals in the playoffs, he is looking at Joel Ward money on a 4 year deal.

Play hungry Boyler, pay day is just a few months away.

I wish somehow we could get Subban for 5 million and the 1st and 3rd round picks that come with signing a RFA

McDonagh - Subban
Staal - Girardi
??? - Klein

Drool over that top 4.

I know this is a pipe dream

Stralman declines the contract offer... bye stralman :laugh:

I really think that's why Klein was brought in...not to replace Danny G but to replace stralman if he doesn't want to resign

It appears to be good news that Staal wants to have his contract done this summer. Makes you think its, come to terms this summer and stay in New York....

Wait, wait, wait....you mean to tell me he is not automatically going to end up a Carolina Hurricane in the near future like so many here proclaimed? :sarcasm:

It is hilarious how now people are talking about Staal resigning and maybe Eric and Jordan coming to NY....too bad they both make way too much money. Although, Eric Staal would be the best center on this NY Rangers team.

Subban wouldn't even sign a 5M offer sheet. If a team is going to try and offer sheet Subban it's going to take 8M+ and Montreal is still 99% going to just match it. I hope they sign Vanek to an extension that puts them in a position where they'd have some difficulty should Subban get an offer sheet, because I absolutely hate the Habs.

It's called depth, which was the 2012 team's biggest undoing.

Funny how I dont see calls here & elsewhere for the Prusts and John Mitchells of the world anymore.

It is called depth, and the Rangers have not only replaced what they lost in the Nash trade, but overall they've improved it.
The 4th line has been terrific, and now the 3rd unit (in my mind at least, the Richards line) boasts Marty St Louis.
The way I see it, this is largely because 3 players - Puliot, Zuccarello, and Kreider - all answered the early-season questions about them in the affirmative and really helped fill out this lineup.

I also dont know wth people are looking at when they slam Dorsett.
The guy was playing outstanding hockey, largely penalty-free, when he got hurt. He was one of their most consistent players after that horrendous early-season west coast stretch.
And you definitely want to have at least a black ace or two ready for the playoffs....

Oh, and meant to say, forgot the poster the other night who was very concerned about Kreider's scoring drought, and his, in the author's words, 'motivation'. Im guessing whoever it was is feeling better tonight.

You think Nash gets **** on this team? You should read the Canes board on Staal.

Eric or Jordan? Eric is overpaid, Jordan is overpaid. I'm not sure what he gets **** on for..not having a bigger impact but he definitely is trying and if its the contract, blame the GM. Unless, he only shows up for the games I've seen which is possible because I don't watch the Canes regularly

I am one of them. AV cut Kreider's minutes the last 2 games to under 10 minutes, and it woke him up this afternoon. It's maturity with him, and the coach supplied the motivation, if it came intrinsically from Chris his numbers would be better.... although this does benefit the Rangers' cap next season as Kreider would be lucky to break $2M on his next contract.

This Detroit game he played with a sense of urgency, and parked himself in the slot and skated hard every shift. He played to his strengths with an elevated battle level and the results speak for themselves.

It's just that he doesn't do that every game or every shift, never has from what I've seen but neither did Benoit Pouliot earlier this season, but once he did, he's become an effective player.

Re-sign:

Kreider
Zuccarello
Brassard
Pouliot
Carcillo
J. Moore
D. Moore

Start negotiating on Staal's contract as soon as the playoffs are done. If he is reasonable, sign him. If he prices himself out, trade him (Jeff Skinner?).

Buyout Richards.

Try to improve the center position, try to find an offensive defenseman.

There was a report that Subban already turned down 7x7. I agree that it would be nice but it would be beyond a pipe dream.

The best that everyone can hope for is that Subban goes to arbitration for a 2 year deal to come out as UFA. He will get 9+ as UFA in two years if he keeps up his play.

Think its a combination of things with Kreider; said it the other night; he had a real long stretch of really impactful games, maybe 12-15 or so; think he got banged up a bit;

First of all, no one in NHL history has been a Terminator-style wrecking ball every shift or every game of their career. It's impossible.

I also liken Kreider to a big guy like Kovalev; they need icetime to get going; often ,lots of it. A guy like that can be quiet for a period or even two and then the adrenaline gets going and they're a turbo force out there.
Now, like AV was saying, MSL is going to get Kreider's PP time; that's a factor. His linemates, while excellent, vanish themselves from time to time;

But with Kreider I have zero worries when it comes to his desire and approach. Some heavy hitters, like Messier & Richards both said the same thing, that this kid wants it so bad, he almost wants it too bad some times. That in itself can be a factor, if a guy gets too tight.
And sure, if you're not going, the coach might not give you the ice;
but Kreider's the least of my worries with this team.
Said the other night be was due for a breakout. He's also real streaky, so those guys can be tough to read.

No offense, but this drives me batty. Just finished reading Larry Brooks, who said it again for the umpteenth time;
IF the Rangers were to trade Marc Staal, they can trade him anywhere.

It doesnt have to be to Carolina.

Same thing happened with MaxPac in MTL. The last stint MaxPac spent in the minors, he he requested that he stay down there until he figured out his offensive game. I don't think of Kreider as a Semin type of player, but just one that hasn't played every game like the 12-15 games he played after his call up.

With this physical gifts, if he imposes his will, playing a straight line game, he is a dominant player. Every commentator I've heard said the same thing the last couple of years, "once he figures it out... Watch out".

The difference between good and elite is consistency. If Kreider plays like he did today, the team is significantly better. Not too different from JVR or MaxPac in that regard.

Agree with all that; and the great news is Kreider can be more impactful (is that a word?) than either of those guys. His skills stand out that much.

and the thing I dont know if anyone realizes is how well this kid shoots the puck; despite his goal totals, he hasnt had many clean looks, and he's rang some posts and just missed on a few.
They're all rockets goaltenders cannot handle.

First thing Id said was, it's his first time playing at this level this long; he just needs to find the night-in, night-out pace. It's a long year, Olympic break or not.

same time, overall Id think anyone would say Kreider's having a heck of a rookie season.
No one thinks of him as a rookie around these parts; but it's his first prolonged look.
and he's gonna end up with 20 goals pretty easy.

Today Eddie O said Nash has really taken Kreider under his wing;
that can only help.
