You make fair points, but the idea would be to find a younger player with upside that your shrewd pro scouts feel is undervalued and has upside. Laine may not work because the asking price for a former 2OA is usually enormous.

My initial post was asking what his value would be...

Petry + Drouin (cap dump + reclamation project) + 2023 Habs 1st surely gets the Columbus phone to pick up, doesn't it? Laine is not signed and they haven't seemed to get close, Laine has a fair bit of leverage too and can get UFA status with another one year contract iirc. Columbus isn't a destination either. I'm just thinking out loud. I made similar arguments for acquiring Fiala a few weeks ago.

The one line summary is that I think young, proven RFAs are worth a LOT more than draft picks, so we should consider this while the Habs re-build

This is a interesting way to look at it and TBH, while I believe that KH does not want to retain, if this allows him to hit a homerun, this is a no brainer. That being said, this implies that any retention = very, very, very good return.

If you were a playoff team looking for a top 4RD, you likely don't have much cap space. So retention or cap dump coming back is in play here.

If it's the stars, what's the logical cap dump? There might not be so then maybe retention comes in play.

Seen a rumor or tweet yesterday that the Devils are high on Primeau. Would you trade Guhle, Primeau, and Anderson for 2nd OA?

My gut tells me there is less than a 5% chance the Devils trade the pick but I can't help but wonder what Hughes is up to.

Yeah, I'm high on him too. Personally, I would trade Romanov before him and maybe to some other teams, they are the same. To me, I have Guhle's potential higher but it's close.

Call me crazy but I'd consider it and push for Romanov, Anderson, and Primeau. I get it though... to some, that appears to be very low.

Figured. From our angle, Guhle could be just as good as Cooley or Slaf or one of the D. Other fans could laugh at that but Guhle is on a good track and you never know where he tops out at.

I can see the Devils high on Primeau. Probably won't give him grade A value though.

Our best D prospect and arguably the best D in CHL

Our best goalie prospect at a time when Price’s career is likely done.

For a pick that likely wound not be too 5 in next years draft.

2) Guhle should be untouchable yes. We could be trading a Suzuki quality on D.... before they play NHL. Very risky. I'd focus on Romanov cause there might not be a better time to trade him. Not low on Romanov but I wonder how much more he grows.

3) I'm not as high on Primeau as others. If the Devils are, I'm listening. I'm willing to bet that Primeau does not become our full time starter down the road.

Walk away with 1st, 2nd, 18th, 33rd. That would be a Gorton-esque draft.

Dallas isn't trading a RD back for Petry. Their cap dumb will be Khudobin if there is a trade. And taking Khudobin allow the Habs to not call up Primeau next season.

You don’t develop a young Top 4 defender just to trade him for a chance at another top 4 defenceman.

Also I see both Romanov and Anderson gone in trade propositions... Can’t wait to see Caufield, Drouin, Hoffman, Evans and the gang throw that weight around and defend their team mates. Maybe Byron can jump in those scrums too. Can Primeau fight?

I believe 20 year olds will need high iq veterans to emulate and learn from, and tough guys who have their back so they don’t all turn into Hoffman and Drouin.
