Its been a funny 5 years listening to people either freakout in our fanbase about Price’s contract or degrade him because of it. He’s all but primed to be on IR in a couple of years. The $10.5 may be hard to swallow for some contenders, but somebody looking for a few seasons of good goaltending can get that for a few seasons at a reasonable trade cost and we could retain or he simply retired here. It’s not a problem at all. There’s far less manageable contracts out there.
I have a question for you regarding retaining on a player that will retire or go on IR, before the contract expires. It’s ok if you don’t have the answer and hopefully someone can chip in.

Are we and if so, how much are we on the hook on Price contract if he decides to retire or go on IR for the reminder of his contract?

Some GMs are very skilled at overhyping their assets, so contenders do tend to trade their firsts. However, I hardly see any contender give up a first for Chiarot or anything above a 7th for Kulak. Some Habs fans are quick to overvalue players once again.

These hockey insiders are quick at claiming all kinds sometimes. Let's not dwell about silly things.

The point is that I rather see a very high established prospect coming back than a first. The Habs have been horrendous at drafting the past decade.

You realize a 1st is worth much less than an very high established prospect ? How can you expect/prefer an established prospect when you think Chariot is not worth a first ?

Would you trade Ghule for a late first ? No one in their right kind would, just like any other team. You overvalue 1st by a wide margin. Any prospect that were selected and that are trending really well are worth far more than a late 1st. Basic Math.

When you refer to the Paccio trade...Vegas would have obviously prefer to trade a late 1st than a good prospect. It's obvious at the time Bergevin asked for a prospect...not a pick that "could" be good 4-5 years down the line.

If a high prospect is coming back, it's not because the team prefer that..but because the market dictate it and Gordon could ask for it.

Trading Price should still be priority no1. He has the ability to screw a rebuild by winning games on his own. As for the other overpaid veterans like Gallagher, Petry, Anderson and cie, I would wait for their value to go up or just keep them around to groom the young players.

I would trade ASAP all players with good value like Chariot, Toffoli, Edmunson, Allen, etc.

This team needs a rebuild badly (and a complete overhaul internaly).

Not really. A high prospect can easily bust. Vegas had Suz and Glass. They gave up on the first and lucked out.

NHL teams all keep their firsts nowadays. Some contenders have no use for them and give them up because they are deep in the prospect pool. The market will dictate what Chiarot is worth. Would be surprising if the Habs end up with a first, it would be a late one anyways. Not saying it won't happen though. It will depend on Gorton or whom ever is the new GM.

The market has already said he’s worth a 1st. Now it’s time to see who pays and how high a 1st we get.

The market has said nothing yet. All we have is some hockey insiders claiming he's worth a first. Don't jump to conclusions just yet. Sometimes, it's about landing a good prospect that you can develop instead of a late first and taking a gamble.

I would rather see the Habs get a a good prospect (that they know how that player has progressed) than a late 1st. I think that prospect is worth more myself and teams may have a harder time giving that asset up for a rental than a draft pick.

Which prospects do you have in mind?
Listening to Larry Brooks every morning on WFAN here, it’s clear to me Dolan’s mandate to Drury is all chips are in and go for broke.

In the immortal words of NYY GM Brian Cashman, “NY is not a market for developing talent”

With Gorton’s familiarity of the prospect pool I’m expecting a 1st + Kravtsov + Lundqvist

But wouldn’t be shocked if it were a bigger blockbuster deal including the likes of Gallagher, Caufield, and Lafreniere.

Gallant is a MEGA Gallagher fan.

Heck, we can work something around Gallagher + for Lafreniere + anytime in my book. Those are the type of deals we should be making right now.

You guys could be surprised by some moves. I do think that Gorton will have a chat with Price and will put all cards on deck. And that 31 will ask to leave. No inside info here. Just a hunch.
And you will be surprised how much interest he will garner when he comes back. Montreal will need to eat 3.5 to 4M of his (cap) salary. But I do think he will leave.

I agree, I think if 31 is open to move the AVS will be very interested

I could be blind, but do we have a waiver wire thread?

Also, curious on thoughts about picking up James Neal and potentially flipping at tdl. Throw minutes at him while we are full of injuries and covid, get maybe a 4th if he works out alright and gets some points.

Sabres fan here. Interested in your thoughts on a Price trade. The Sabres need to move Jeff Skinner’s contract at some point. He’s not worth $9m per season, but he’s on track for 25 goals this season, which is about normal.

Thoughts on Skinner for Price?

thanks in advance!

That's an obvious no.
Skinner has the worst contract in the league by far. He's only going to be tradeable when he has 1 year left on his contract.

Theres a price tag is hanging over Chiarot head right now. Says bidding starts at a 1st rounder. Someone will pay it. There is no doubt especially when you look at what UFAs go for at the deadline the past few years. This year might be even crazier with the number of contenders who’ll want a battle tested big physical D.

Want to add some (small) fuel on a possible Price trade? Today, Angela mentioned on Insta that she is dropping her CH line of clothing because (reading between the lines) she doesn’t feel it’s worth it. (Even though she sold EVERYTHING last season). Mmmmm….
Fingers crossed he gets traded!

Yeah. That too! They are keeping their other business venture (related to the rest of the NHL). But not doing the Habs one anymore. Funny. She mentions that the Habs own the right to the brand, whereas the other one is theirs. I found that message very cryptic.

But no one picked up on that. Everybody picked up her comments on Covid shots. LOL Boy, did they! LOL
