Oh, the gold in this thread.

I tried to tell em at the time.

Tavares had a month long slump, the worst of his career and then went right back to his usual consisitant self. Look even now as so many are acting surprised at Tavares numbers so far even though he finished last season with 18 goals and 34 points in 36 games.

I like the fact his defensive numbers have so solid the last couple of years to go with evolution into one of the best faceoff guys in hockey during his time with the Leafs. You can tell he's one of the harder working guys in hockey.

remember, if you truly want to understand the present or yourself, you must begin in the past. You see, history is not simply the study of the past. It is an explanation of the present.
Deep. Nice.

I suspect he's is going to get around probably three years between $5M and $6M annually.

Anything thing longer term or higher rate and Leafs should walk. IMO
I expect that he will take much less than that over a longer term. I think 6 or 7 years at $3-$4 million per year.

That covers the difference in the Marner contact
We shouldn’t be looking at stuff like that as covering someone else’s increase. We need to be counting on Tavares’s saving to improve the team, not just shoveling it into Marners bank account. That’s why we have been playoff failures for 8 years and counting .
Stupid Dubas started this cycle and somehow we need to break the cycle. We need to start getting players to play above their contracts and not always being behind in that regard

His contract status for next season is unknown, but John Tavares is proving he still has a huge role to play on the Leafs.

A lot of this wild comeback went through him, never mind the winning goal, but taking 23 faceoffs — the vast majority — and getting a nice assist on Bobby McMann’s opening goal on their rejigged line with Mitch Marner after the whole team sucked in Tuesday’s 3-0 shutout loss to Ottawa.

It was Tavares’ 77th game winner, tying Patrick Kane for sixth among active NHL skaters and his 18th OT strike. Only Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Brad Marchand and Jaromir Jagr have more.

You can sing his praises all you like but unfortunately, he's been consistently subpar in the playoffs.

Him and Marner have been the same - good during the regular season but then their production goes way down in the playoffs and last year they both hit rock bottom, Marner with LOL 3 points in 7 games and JT with LOLOLOL 2 points.

For those people who don't care about the playoffs, this is not a problem but for those of us dreaming about winning the cup, this is a massive problem and these guys have simply not been earning their pay and when 22 million brings you 5 points over 7 games, that's a lot to overcome. And no, winning faceoffs, killing penalties and whatever else is not enough, with massive cap hits like these guys have, you must produce offence as well.

What's really weird is that in Marner's case, many have said that his game is simply not suited for the playoffs and when the teams adjust to playoff hockey and focus in defence, he is no longer effective and that makes a lot of sense but JT? His game is completely different from Marner's in the regard, he's a talented grinder, Crosby lite as many have said and his game is very well suited for the playoffs so his lack of production is not only a big disappointment, but also a big surprise. Seriously JT, WTF??

Maybe this spring will be different. As the saying goes, hope is the last to die.

JT hasn't received much criticism from me over the years as he came here voluntarily.

It's all about playoffs. That's it. The cap structure cannot support four high paid forwards, maybe not even three.
This guy gets it!

That's a fair assessment - I don't think there's ever been so much cap devoted to so few players.

It could be seen as a bold experiment by Dubas. Or a stupid one. That seems possible.

Now Treliving has really tightened the screws on contracts so it should all improve. LOL. What screws? What tightening?....

Regardless, JT is once again looking like a PPG player and his contract is on Dubas, not himself. I can't remember but is he also the only one who didn't lock himself in the bathroom for a while before signing?

As for the playoffs, I agree. Since our magical rebuild and getting some excellent draft picks it's been a straight line to the playoffs.

And other than that magical 1st year against the Caps, it's been..... "sad" to say the least.

While he might give the Leafs a gift like that I don't think that too likely.

He puts up close to a PPG this year he'll want one more big deal...I could see him pushing 7 million per on a multi year.

He 34 so you want him on a 6-7 year deal...maybe if you give him 5 million per

for his next contact we have to determine how many playing years he has left then what is the salary for someone producing the same amount of points.

So let’s say $7M X 4 years

Then spread that out for 8 years

Next contract $3.5M X 8 years LTIR after 4 or 5 years then he retires

This has always been a question for his next contract, whether that's with the Leafs or not.

So many stupid takes over the years. It was never Tavares' fault.

And now everyone is in love with Mitch again...............Bipolar nation for sure.

I'd love him back on year to year deals if he'd do it. 4m per to start?

It really depends.

But for you know what's sake we're at the end of his deal and he's UFA. Eureka!!! Dude gave up the C..........etc.

Not exactly in love with Mitch and would probably still want him gone but in the interest of fairness I will give him props for the way he has played since Matthews has been off. This just further proves that the “mix” is wrong. We are seeing proof that individually they are all decent players but together they are worth less then the sum of the parts.
I will wait and see how long Marner keeps up this great effort especially when Matthews comes back before I adjust my opinion on him

lol, don’t worry the first two game pointless streak and the low brow goons will be back to projecting themselves onto Marner. Just watch.

The ironic thing is he’s been good in the playoffs. Maybe the best of the core other than Rielly in that Tampa series that got them to the 2nd round. (Disgusting that 2nd round is our bar at this point.)

He's been decent. I think Nylander has been more consistent though but I haven't checked the stats.
