Watching the game today and Chiarot would a great fit for the Panthers

he would fit next to Ekblad like he did with Weber ans Weegar could slot in the second pairing

Chiarot
Vs
Denisenko
1 pick 2023
I’d simply prefer Gorton use Fla as bait to create a bidding war

I expect a 3-component return similar to Muzzin, there’s some desperate orgs out there who need to make noise these playoffs or their ownership will drop the axe - Bos, Phi, Avs, Edm missing the playoffs won’t go over well, and NYR not making a deep run won’t sit well with Dolan

if Jeff can move: ( I say this as the ones he has a chance in moving, not saying all of them)
hopefully 3 of these ones
Gally
Ben
Tyler
Petry
JD (with a hope and prayer)

then this is not bad at all, price remains for sure

Would definately trade:

1) Chiarot (return will be high)

2) Petry (likely the return will be lower than expected because of his mediocre play this season and cap)

3) Lek

Good rental player. High return possible.

4) Armia

His size and physique are useful. A high pick maybe possible. However, his cap is a deterrent, therefore the return will be lower.

It gets complicated after:

1) Gally (cap, injuries, terrible season, not tradeable or horrible return)

2) Byron (not tradeable, injuries)

Good rental player if healthy. Late round pick at most (4th/5th).

3) Weber (simply un-tradeable)

Send him back to Nashville. Also, will help the Preds with that early retirement recapture penalty. Maybe they can send back a good prospect for his contract.

4) JD (lost cause)

Enough said. Contract will expire next year. Don't see a team in the running to acquire his services anytime soon. Very low return if any. Good rental player for a contender next year but don't expect anything more than 6th or 7th at most.

5) Price (good luck)

High cap, past his prime. Health issues. Uncertain future. I see an equally bad contract traded for Price and maybe some good prospect with some salary retained by the Habs. Off course, this is only possible if Price comes back healthy.

6) Edmundson

I would build around this guy for now.

7) Allen

No other goalie in the farm is ready to take on the role. If someone offers the moon, trade him but they need to ice bodies out there.

8) Montambeault

Mediocre backup, but he fills the role nicely.

9) Kulak

Late round pick (7th) or future considerations.

10) Toffoli

Not willing to part ways with this guy. You need to ice a team, he's affordable and the best Habs forward.

11) Hoffman

Again, you need to ice a team. He's the closest thing to a sniper this team has. If someone offers the moon, then move him.

12) Savard

He's a hometown player. Likely will become the new poster boy after Drouin leaves. Un-movable for the foreseeable future.

13) Paquette

He's done. No return.

14) Perreault

Eye career ending injury. Return, zero!!

15) Wideman

Good rental player. Likely a late round pick (6th or 7th).

16) Anderson

The contract length makes him unmovable for a few years.

17) Niku

A late round pick (6th or 7th) or future considerations.

18) Dvorak

Don't see the Habs trading him any time soon. Affordable 3rd line C. Move him if someone offers the moon but highly unlikely.

So this leaves us with :

1) CC
2) Suzi
3) Radulov
4) Evans
5) Poehling
6) Guhle
7) Primeau
8) Pinard
9) Ylonen
10) Norlinder
11) Mysak
12) Kidney
14) Kapanen
15) Tuch
16) Hillis/Fairbrother
16) and those who remain on the reserve list

These are prospects or youngsters you want to build around with unless Gorton uses them as bargainchips to acquire a bigger fish. I see some not panning out anyways. Suzuki though has solidified his position as a number 1C for a long time with that contract.

So, I don't see Gorton doing magic here. BargainBin set him up for failure.

Dauphin, Belzille, Pezzetta, Clague, Déa, Ouellet, Baddock, Balpédio and all those other fringe NHLers are filler material, that no team will waste effort to acquire.

The only way I see the Habs becoming dominant again is drafting players in the top 5 for many years. This means finishing in the gutter for a long time. A few top picks may change the course of this franchise and then some good UFAs can complement them.

The future looks bleak right now.

2 players we should trade at the deadline at half retention are Chariot and Kulak. Chariot will definitely return a 1st and plus and Kulak at least a 4th.

Kulak is worth a 7th at most. Don't keep your hopes up. Chiarot will get a second. Teams don't trade their firsts that easily anymore.

That Byron contract makes me so mad. Good lord, Bergevin picks some gold out of the dumpster and doesn't have the good sense to cash it in.

Bergevin tied up way too much term into bottom players as if they were a scarce commodity year over year. That caused him to turn upside finds into a ball and chain and negate any initial advantage that was secured.

Florida's 1 pick 2023 cannot be traded until the season is over it could be part of a conditional deal with Bufalo.

uffalo Sabres Acquire:

If we were to trade Chariot to florida, we would probably get back one of Samoskevich or Denisenko instead of a first round pick.

You clearly don’t know what happened with Petry and McTavish and that loser organization called the Oilers.

That’s really the delusion

I don’t even understand the bolded…as for Reinhart, the problem wasn’t necessarily the problem was the trade target.

They needed help on D…they used draft picks to try to address it, because you know, a decade + of losing leaves marks at every level of your organization.

I don’t know what’s wrong with that concept though, it’s the execution that went wrong.

That’s your opinion…I think they’ve gotten accustomed to losing and believing high picks fix everything.

The exact same lottery fetish you have.

Already mention that the reason why Petry wanted out didn’t matters they had to do the best out of a bad situation, kind of like we had to do with KK, Danault, Perry and Tatar not wanting to be part of this prestigious organisation…

Oilers failed at the draft period. all these years of losing and nothing to show for it, wasn’t because they keep selling great player for more magic bean, it because they couldn’t draft NHL player and when they made trade or sign UFA trying to fill the holes, they didn’t work and it left them in a even worst spot… the team that is trying to fix hole or want it more will usually end up being the team over paying… This is why usually you want to trade from a position of strength… Oilers had issue on D but they did have issue in net and zero dept at FW… they decided to address the issue on D trading a 1st rd pick 16th OV (Barzal) + 2nd rd 33OV (which the NYI used to move up and draft Beauvillier) for Reinhart also traded Hall for Larson in theory it could have workout great, it didn’t but again those move weren’t done to tank they were done to try and dig there way out of the hole they already dug for them self…
A even better example is when we needed offense and decided to acquire Drouin for Sergachev +cond. 2nd… it could have work out but we were dealing from a position of weakness prospect + LD while TB were trading from a position of strength wingers, Drouin was already the odd man out in TB, TB also couldn’t lose him for free in the expansion draft and didn’t have cap space to resign him… if it didn’t work out they were basically back were they had started, on the other hand we know what happen in MTL…

When I look at Carolina they have the best record in the league, their core is young and signed + they had 10 players in the WJC, they have no issues wasting a few pick or prospect to try and improve it isn’t going to set them back, just like it didn’t really hurt TB to trade Drouin or 1st rd pick for guy like Coleman and Savard. Circumstances make all the differences, there a reason why basically all cup winner where built with the draft and that most of the time those core player are top pick.

If losing is so bad how were team like TB, Chicago, LA, Pit, Wsh, DET, Col, NJ ever able to overcome it and make it to the cup?
if it was so easy to find elite talent anywhere in the draft why isn’t any team able to do it consistently?
Also regardless of where you draft it is the same people that will make the decision if they can’t make the right call at 1, 3 or 5 what is going to change at 12th or if you trust them to make the best call at 12th why wouldn’t you have even more faith in them doing better earlier…

We are not in a good spot we shouldn’t be trying to force anything… sit back manage your asset and try not to shoot you self in the foot. Maybe I am so used to losing, because what we are doing isn’t working or just tried of being in this vicious cycle of Wasting asset trying to prop up the team that isn’t going anywhere. Player Losing a additional years is already bad enough, I would not want them to waste entire careers…

It can still be traded, just have to match the conditions. If they pick top 10 this year, habs get that pick, otherwise 2023.

I still think that’s fantasy…Price I don’t think is going anywhere
I don’t think he’s moveable in any way that makes sense. Yeah, if we eat 6-7milliom we might be able to move him. Otherwise, he’s not going anywhere.

It all depends if he can come back and show he can be good in the net, healty.
If everything goes well, we can retain 3,5-4millions per year for 4 years and have a ok return.
This summer, or nexr year.
We'll see.

If we don’t get 1st overall, I would trade our pick for Elias Pettersson in a heartbeat.

Pettersson and Suzuki both at 23 years old down the middle would be special.

Chariot will be dealt by the deadline. I can see a few minor deals happening as well. I believe the Habs will move assets around the draft. Price I believe is here to stay. I'm not sure you can move that contract.

I think our best chance is to take back a bad contract or two. What are some bad contracts around the league?

If we trade with Colorado, it's probably Girard ($5m) & Jost ($2m). They have no goalies signed for next year, and MacKinnon is UFA summer of 2023. I imagine Avs try to sign him this summer.

While they are really tight to the Cap now, they're projected Cap space this summer is $26.5m. 2023 $46m. They have the space to reconstruct their team.

However, they only have 12 players signed for next season. Kadri, Burakovsky, Nikushkin are UFA, and they have no goalies signed.

We'd need to retain $3m.
