GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
I understand Rielly moving on as a fresh start and his best ability just got replaced (PP time) and his defensive game is just too far gone.

Carlo isn't retained past this year, so he needs to be shopped heavily. He's also not very good.

Change is needed, and there will be changes. But McCabe is far too good and important to change... you'll be in very tough to replace what he does.
There is no way we trade any of these guys without something ready for a succession plan.

Like even if we trade McCabe, there is already a replacement ready. Thats the only situation that would allow a trade like that.

All indications show we are trying to go for a cup next year. I doubt we actively make our roster weaker next year in favor of future assets

The Leafs will get one of Bob or Binnington. It won't be Markstrom.

Binnington has 1 year and is making $6 million. I may be on my own with this but he doesnt make me feel warm and fuzzy at the tought of him and Hildabeast in net. He will also presumably want more then $6 million to extend.

Bob's contract asks seems a little too crazy for me. On a 2 year deal I would be all over it but for anything more it has disaster written all over it. How many goalies have played well into their late 30s let alone beyond.

Markstrom imo has 2 years on his deal, bit of a reclaimation project but doesnt lock us up or paint us into a corner and we get out of 4 years of Stolarz. I think after 2 years of Markstrom one of Hildbeast or AA will either look ready to take over or we need to revisit the goalie situation.

Regardless, contracts aside, I do feel a little comforted that someone has finally said the Leafs goalie situation is not adequate going into next season.

I think a 6 year contract to Bob would be the far better option. The contract can easily be traded in 2 or 3 years to a cap floor team.

So it's a contract year for binny? They always say players play godlike in situations like this. Could be good for us. (Just trying to find a silver lining)

Sharks amassing all these picks and having young studs has me dreaming BIG, real BIG if you catch my drift.
You know it ain't happening, friend. Rogers is not going to trade off their golden goose. The irrationality with which they are committed to him is real.

I wonder if something like,

To Toronto-
Jack Drury
Valerie Nichushkin

To Colorado-
Jake McCabe
Nick Robertson
Buffalo 2nd Round Pick

Mathews isnt going anywhere and will sign a extension here. Book it.

He isnt going to waive ....like Nylander. They will be here for awhile. They love Toronto.

We heard fans scream that our GM is listening to 34 and 88 about direction and coach and then same fans want to trade them. Too funny.

If the coach did listen to them , then why would he trade them?

Typical fans trying to get rid of our elite players. I hope they retire here.

We just signed a 30 yr old player to a 8 yr contract. We are not rebuilding here. We changed directions in systems etc and are just retooling because Tre and Berube set us back years with their bogus DNA change crap that the mediots and fans ate up.

We are going to draft McKenna, Rielly may be traded (which is good) , We will get players back healthy.

This will be a playoff team again. :)

JMHO :)
if you repeat something enough times people will take it as the truth.

40 points on a shit leafs team with a system like others pointed out COMPLETELY opposite to his skills at age 25? That kind of production has 50-60 on a good structure offense team, that is gonna cost you 4+ on the open market for a lot of the paydays coming. Either you trade him as a young asset for a bigger piece in a trade or you DEFINITELY sign him and hope he can bring that production at PP2 and middle 6ix minutes

If they can negotiate a good contract, keep the Finn.

Yeah too bad. Now’s the time for Misa and the no. 2 pick overall. Added to McKenna. That’s 1, 2 and Misa. Rebuild full throttle.

we don't know Captain America's mindset on this until he publicly states he wants to play here the possibility exists, and as Harry Nilsson sang: "dreams are nothing more than wishes and I wish is just a dream that's to come true."

It’s a promising start. Every new hire starts with small little moves which makes things look good. So far Chayka has been paint by numbers. We all knew a goalie was likely to move and Raddysh was set on signing here. The first overall was icing on the cake. Now the real work begins. It still looks a long way away from legitimate contender.
I'll give Chaka props for not making a bone headed move thus far, hopefully he can keep up the good work.

5x6.5M for Ferraro is horrendous. He is not better than any of our current options.

If we move out Rielly we need another LD. McCabe and OEL are a little older. With the cap increasing, I think $6.5 is going to be the new $4.5 but if he can sign for less, cheaper is cheaper. If you dont like Ferraro, I am open to suggestions. I am not married to the idea of him but I feel like we will need to bring someone else in. I am not confident in Andrae + McCabe and OEL on the left side. I think McCabe and OEL have played well but at their age and miles I think it is likely one or both may get injured at some point or they may need some level of load management to make sure they can function should we get back to the playoffs.

Maybe this has already been explained, but can someone explain the Byram trade for me from a Buf perspective? They just finally made the playoffs, what good is the 4th overall pick for them next year?
probably has more to do with his agent than the player, that's how much Ferris is despised by GM's around the league. Chicago is in for a rude awakening.

McCabe is actually a very good skater.

He's 80th+ percentile in almost every skating metric and 86th percentile in max skating speed. That's pretty damn good. And aside from speed he has solid edgework and gap control.
See this is what makes me wonder about the skating stats and if they mean anything or are a reliable stat.

Talk to any Tampa fan and they will tell you Raddysh excelled when Moser became his partner because of his skating. Anytime you watch a Tampa game and everyone talks about Moser's skating and how he is all over the ice and fast.
Same issue with Andrae. The book on him is a good/very good skater plays a fast game. Watch some of his games and you will see he is a very good skater and plays a fast game. Yet these stats show him as average or below.
Watch McCabe the last two years and he looks like he has lost a step yet the stats show he hasn't. Is it systems? Tampa loves to push the puck so does it make Moser "faster" than he is? Andrae played in a very conservative system under Tochett did it slow down his stat line? really makes me wonder about the value of skating stats
