He’s the same age as McCabe. If Chayka is trying to win today it’s likely he targets Rakell over that package.

I already feel between McCabe, OEL and Tanev we are too old at defense.

If we are moving McCabe out I hope its for a younger asset that can contribute right away. Rakell is a very good player but injurie, age and him likely hitting the decline stage of his career soon worries me in targeting him

Value wise Rakell for McCabe is probbaly fait but then we have to look into adding a top 4LD which wont be easy unless if we go with Ferraro or Shea both of who are worse than McCabe (who isnt a top pairing LD himself).

I hope Chayka can balance competing now (UFAs) and building for the future (rielly deal, mccabe/oel deal, a carlo deal) where we build towards fixing the prospect pool or young NHL pipeline.

The canes have managed to be both really good while having a lot of futures assets. Leafs have been to focused on free agent rentals and bad management moves that has led to us being in a poor spot.

Chayka is said to be innovative and creative so hopefully he finds ways to work in both directions.

I don't think there is any intent to "build for the future" other than drafting McKenna and collecting some draft picks can be flipped for players at the deadline (or earlier).

I highly, highly doubt that the Leafs would be interested in a McCabe-Rakell swap.

If you're trading McCabe; its for something resembling a long-term solution up front - probably a centre under 30.
