Bettman tells BoG league is officially opening expansion process for Houston or Austin to be owned by Friedkin family

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Can't be Houston. The ice will melt, even in the middle of winter.

It won't, thanks to this fancy new technology we have called refrigeration. It's powered by another fancy new thing we've learned how to harness and use called electricity. You may have heard of them. :P

Does Houston get hotter/humidity more than Tampa/Sunrise?

I know Houston is somewhat close to the Gulf.

Well, here's some data for you on that.

Miami (close enough to Sunrise I guess):

yes, though I'm no expert in either area. The one time I was in Houston, on Labor Day weekend, it felt like I was walking into a wall of Humidity and heat when I got off the plane. Reminded me of Malaysia.

In florida, a lot depends on how close you are to the sea and its cooling breezes - I guess the same could be said of Texas.

I really do not care if you have a problem with my opinion lol you can simp for the owners and hope for a 50 team league. Knock yourself out.
Simp eh? We know whst you watxh on YouTube 😏

And I really do want the 21 team league back. At this point 32, 36, 48....makes no difference: just a bunch of trams with a bunch of players that only the people paid to know them know them.

And the quality? Meh. 32, 36, 58....beyond being a consideration anymore, thst bridge was passed a long time ago

4 divisions, 8 teams per division. 32 teams.

That's balanced and makes sense. Any more and things are awkward and it diluted the talent pool. Please stop.
It wont, they will be the first league with 36 teams.
Phoenix is coming again too. And probably Kansas.

Yes. Please stop.

For those who nostalgic, Quebec could be in the mix. Or Markham.

Already discussing the expansion possibility topic on the Business of Hockey string.

To put it bluntly, Houston is oppressively hot and humid during the summertime. Probably hotter and more humid than Miami or Tampa Bay in that regard.

But Houston winters, while overall mild of course, ARE COLDER than those in Miami or Tampa Bay.

We nearly always have a handful of freezing temps in a given year. Perhaps a snowfall once every five years. Of course, we also have mild short sleeve winter days, but it ebbs and flows.

Given that hockey is a winter sport, it is worth mentioning that Houston has MUCH more of a winter than Las Vegas, Miami, or Tampa Bay do. Possibly a colder winter on average than SoCal, though I'd have to research that.

During the 1970s, the WHA Houston Aeros with Gordie Howe outdrew the NBA Rockets at the Summit at times, so the potential is there.

I sure hope the NHL doesn't choose Austin instead. Houston is by far the largest market in North America without an NHL franchise, and dissing that market for the comparatively puny Austin market would seem like a dumb idea.

Just need to figure out the arena thing. Perhaps Tilman Fertitta will allow Friedkin to use the Toyota Center. If not, then something will need to built......most likely in the Burbs.

This has Houston written all over it.

Question is, will they be called the Aeros?
I hope you are right on part one.

It would be embarrassing to lose this chance to a far smaller city like Austin. Any Austin team would be essentially Columbus 2.0. That said, the fact that their name is being mentioned has me worried.

On part two, I would prefer the name Aeros because of its history in the WHA with Gordie Howe, the IHL, and the AHL. I was too young to see the WHA Aeros play, but went to a handful of IHL/AHL Aeros games back in the day.

I believe the Wild still owns the name and logos from the AHL Aeros. Perhaps a new Houston NHL team could acquire them. If not, then perhaps a return to the 70s WHA colors and logos. My avatar is a 70s Aeros logo.

One guy on another board I visit suggested remodeling the old Astrodome into an NHL arena. It's an interesting proposal.
