Yeah, I don't think there is any reason to be optimistic about this upcoming season. The only way we win in the playoffs is if Matthews and Marner can play like they do in the regular season in the playoffs. We need Hart candidate Matthews to play like one in the playoffs and for Marner to not completely become a ghost afraid of his own shadow.

Team is weaker next year and either they carry this team to win or they are bounced out in the first round again.

I'd love to know the record of most consecutive first round losses by a team because it feels like we've got to be pretty darn close to it.

These guys do not deserve any trade deadline acquisitions and quite frankly Rielly should be traded at the deadline at worst regardless of where we are in the standings because I don't care if they are on the verge of winning the President's Trophy. When the real thing begins, they haven't shown up.

The record for consecutive first round losses in the four-round era is six. We're literally (including the play-in) on the verge of a record-tying season.

He wasn't the player to build around as the main guy, so he was moved. As a third option in Pittsburgh, he thrived... I think he would here, as a third option too. He'd be welcomed back, and the pressure wouldn't be on him here. I'm not sure I'd really want to give up much in assets to get him, but Bozak and Kessel on the third line together, would be funny, for old time sakes.
That would be such a weird deja vu sire. Branging the time back and together again. We wouldn't win the cup though with those players. We already have the softies and talented offensive threads and scorers. Now we need just souljas and twerkas. Hard. I'm pretty happy what sire dubas did this summer. He brang us together. Like nixon did during his president time.

I don't think you can have the mentality that a team doesn't deserve to add/subtract from the team based on previous years outcomes. I would also think that Dubas is going to use every asset available at the deadline because his job is on the line. Whether that's the right mentality to have or even allow (if you're Shanahan), it's a huge reality.

It has to be a complete team effort when it comes time to the playoffs. I understand that they haven't done squat and won't get the benefit of the doubt, but there has to be some sort of hope (>5%?) that the narrative can change.

Ya unfortunately the Muzzin signing has complicated the left side a lot as it has blocked Dermott which has block Sandin and now it may block a Reilly resign

Dermott can play both sides, and I have yet to see an NHL teams defence not experience injuries in a full season.

Why can't Dermott replace (and improve upon) the transition and defensive that Rielly brought to the table? Talented offensive defensemen like Sandin can certainly step in and provide similar (or even greater) offensive value in a sheltered role. It's a question worth looking into when you're as cap strapped as the Leafs are. Personally, I do not want to retain Rielly past 30 - he continues to rely on his skating to make up for his lack of judgement up the ice and this was in full display this year when he was paired alongside Brodie. What happens when that skating disappears, be it injury (god forbid) or natural decline? You've potentially hamstrung the team with two albatrosses in Rielly and Tavares.

Domi + Manson are my 'new want'

Manson (retained) - 2M
For
Engvall + Liljgren

Domi (retained) - 3.5M
For
Kerfoot + Abramov

(Hit em with 3 lines - minutes vary game to game)

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Ritchie - Tavares - Robertson
Simmonds - Domi - Marner
-
Mikhayev - Kampf - Spezza/Anderson/?

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin - Manson
Dermott - Holl

EDIT : I was scrambling thinking I posted in a covid thread.

Welll what percentage of teams make the playoffs 6 straight years?

Domi was exposed for the draft and passed over, and you are offering up our top prospect for him?
godness, Kerfoot alone is enough to get Domi retained, since no team seems to want him after a season of being there.
Domi isnt really C ...MTL used him as one because they didnt have anyone decent at C at the time, and certainly wouldnt be playing C on the Leafs.

Manson hasnt been 'good' for 3-4 seasons ...I'd rather keep our younger and cheaper players and maybe give them a chance to play.

Dillon was exposed and got 2x2nds.

Safe to say they won't be adding a Domi to this organization. They have enough issues currently without piling more on (or a moron)lol,

Tatar 2 x $4.5. A premium I think, because he is signing with a 29th placed team and no issue with lack of playoff production as the Devils are probably at least 3 years out.

FA Pickings are getting pretty thin. I wonder, as Kampf will likely deliver between 1 and 8 goals does that put some pressure on the club to improve on Kerfoot's 11 or so from the #3 spot? None of Bozak, Johansson and Cizikas are likely to hit 15g so trade would seem to be the only option.

Tatar got more than expected but Devil's had money to burn. Probably see him as a trade chip with retention for the tdl this season or next.

I can't comprehend that Nurse contract in the slightest. Pure madness. Holland must be getting desperate to try and prove to McDavid to get him to stay

Lol @ the Oilers cap management. 14.75 million AAV for Nurse and Hyman? Makes our top contracts look good in comparison.

That Nurse contract is laughably bad.

Unfortunately we are seeing a market shift in d-men contracts at all tiers… so the current market value for Rielly has shifted up by 1-2 mill in AAV

He got bridged twice. This is what happens. Guys want to get paid eventually and he helped out Edmonton a lot. Same thing happened with Werenski.

Guys like Point are an exception, not a rule... and much of that comes from the fact that they can make more than 11 million dollar players in Toronto despite having a 9.5 mill cap hit.

We paid Rielly and I don't think he gets Jones hype, so one would hope he comes at a much more reasonable number. Same with our other stars, who were also paid early and fairly.

Then it's asta la vista baby...

Also, there’s no way Rielly should stay with us.

He could get 9M on the open market. We’ll need him between 6-6.75 to make it work I think.

That would be a big discount even if we gave him 8 years.

Start looking for a trade.

Big factor in this is the cost for his replacement

I don't think he gets Hamilton money. Hamilton gets some added hype for being a big RD with good metrics. Same thing happened with Jones.

I think Rielly gets 8 mill if he goes to the open market, but it won't be from a good team and it won't be for 8 years. We can offer him the around the same money, as a contending team, over 8 years instead of 7. He maybe sacrifices a bit of money but he said he would do that for us anyways.
