Because the reality is the majority of posters on this forum are straight up homers.

There is zero reason to be optimistic about this upcoming season.
I’m definitely a homer and l last year might of been the biggest disappointment I felt in my 46 years of cheering. I was hoping for a core shake up because I am away less optimistic than I have been for a long time with the team that has this much talent

With the Werenski deal and now the Nurse deal at 9.25m, the writing seems to be on the wall when it comes to Rielly. He can easily command 8m on the open market and Toronto has no business paying him 8m+

Toronto is going to be in a tough stop, try to keep him for another run (whether you think they can win is another story) or sell him off right now and get good value on him (could be more if they have an extension in place with the team, like Jones and Chicago.)

Even if you can get a 1st + good prospect or a roster player, you could always turn around and flip the assets for another d-man with term.

If there was going to be a Leaf, that was going to start the trend of holding back on their contract demands to help the team win Championships its Morgan Rielly.

I'm hoping Dubas is negotiating as we speak and he comes in 7-7.5. We can't afford more.

If the team fails again Dubas knows he's gone, so I'm worried it'll be another all or nothing approach, we fail and Morgan walks with us getting nothing.

Which would hurt. We shall see what happens though, wish i had a crystal ball.

His current contract has been a bargain, so I'm not sure if he would offer another discount

That Nurse contract might be the worst in the league right now. What a f***ing mess of an org.

Trade Rielly holy

A sub $8 mill AAV for Rielly would be masterful work by Dubas given the contracts this offseason.. $8-$8.5 would probably be fairer. Above that is just a gross overpay.

With Kessel retention that's 1.2 mill... plus cap going up 1 mill... so add that on to his 5 million... could you get him at 8 years for 7.25 million?

You say to him you retire here you're a Leaf for life but you have to give up about a million a year.

It's the difference between 58 million and 64 million for 8 x 8 just for an example.

He's already made 30 million over his career plus he'll make pretty much another 60.

I'm sure many people will argue or disagree with this... but I'd prefer 90 million and staying with the team I've been with since the start of my career.

It just blows my mind sometimes that a guy will leave for another 10 million but you already will make 90 million. Not to mention even though he'd still be filthy rich everyone would think you're a legend for taking "less".

It's what all these guys need to be convinced of going forward including the big 4. Those next contracts... you want to win so take a bit less... or see ya later.

If the guy wants to chase money, then he can probably get 8 mill on the open market. Remember that is only over 7 years though. We can offer him 8 years, so his money should come down if we are offering him max term.

If he wants to come to a team that actually will be competitive right away, he can sacrifice a little bit and stay here. We paid him fairly on his post-ELC deal, which did not happen with Nurse and Werenski, and unlike Chicago, we are a good team. It won't be any different for Matthews/Nylander/Marner on their next deals. They got their fair share, and don't need to get overpaid to make up for taking bridges or less money up front. Guys typically don't ask for overpayments unless your team sucks, they were screwed (like Marner), or took less on their earlier deals... Or perhaps the rare cases like Hyman who did not really earn their pay cheque early on and won't get another chance to earn big money again. I don't think anyone blames Hyman for chasing money when he is going to make more over his first two years on his new deal than he did for his entire career before that new deal.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a "Tampa" moment and he resigns for like 7×7 or 6.5x8 or something.

Instead of always being bent over the barrel and since Nurse got 9.25 btw. Rielly should get 10 from Dubas.

Really hate to say this, how the hell other team can lock a player with 8 years deal and our fabalous GM locked in two players for 5 years and 6 years. Nurse for $9.25 AAV is.. no word.

I don't know how the Leafs will re sign Rielly. It would suck but this might be the time to move him for a haul.
Dubas has been driving up player salaries for years, now he can deal with the ramifications of another team grossly overpaying a player and the resulting market reset. What goes around comes around. Maybe Holland takes over NHLPA man of the year from reigning champ Dubas this season?

Perhaps I haven't seen enough of him but from what I've seen I'd take Nurse over Rielly

If I am Reilly, I would not take anything less than 8.5mil. That’s the market for a Dman like him.

I've seen saying this all summer. It's tough to trade Rielly because of what he's meant to the organization, but if they're keeping the forward core together there's pretty much no way to keep him. He owes the organization nothing and there's no way he's taking a discount. Really can't afford to let another big UFA walk out the door for nothing.

Boy, that Nurse deal sure is a doozy. They can’t possibly be considering giving Mo something similar can they?
