It doesn't.
I'm amazed you don't see the difference between a millionaire and an average person's salary and then take into account what one would need to live off of or retire.

A millionaire who has made 60 million in career earnings already (I think someone used that as an example above). Ya, to me, 100% take a pay cut. Do it for the team or for the fact that you don't need any more money.

If there was going to be a Leaf, that was going to start the trend of holding back on their contract demands to help the team win Championships its Morgan Rielly.

I'm hoping Dubas is negotiating as we speak and he comes in 7-7.5. We can't afford more.

If the team fails again Dubas knows he's gone, so I'm worried it'll be another all or nothing approach, we fail and Morgan walks with us getting nothing.

Which would hurt. We shall see what happens though, wish i had a crystal ball.

Can the club actually afford $7.5? If you look at the forward group as a whole, is it sufficient to win without throwing a bit more money in? How much worse would the team be if they replaced Rielly with a Muzzin or Brodie quality player in that spot? Where there is a team friendly contract there will be a no move as well. The expiring deals next season won't save the club anything. Except for Kessel's retention they have no relief until the cap goes up.

I don't think he will own rental Rielly, more likely Mo will be signed to a deal that will be the next GMs issue to resolve.

Matthews @ 10.5
Marner @ 8.5
No Tavares

That's about 14 million to find a 2C and fill out roster properly

Hindsight I know but....

Have you seen what the NBA stars have been signing for ?? They turn down 40+m options to negotiate bigger deals with more term and sometimes more money.

When I watch Nurse and Rielly play I see two players whose greatest asset isn't defending.

Someone was talking about riding McDavid's coattail, and then you bring up Rielly's 5th. place voting based on point production. Now, points do get Norris votes, Karlsson is a prime example of that. They also ending with buyers remorse, see Karlsson.

Rather have two Hanifins' at 4.9 than 1 Rielly at 9.

Karlsson was just never the same after the injury it was pretty plain to see so that was an odd contract to give out. He was something else before it though. I used to watch a ton of sens games back then (partly because of him) and he was a really special player

There is no difference to them. They compare themselves to their peers, not the average joe.

Almost every player takes as much as possible

As big a fan I am of Rielly, no, I don’t want to see him getting 9.

But two Hanifins over one Rielly would be just gross.

Less than 5 years ago, Tavares took less money to be a Leaf. No love from one forever leafer (you) to another (John)?

Assuming Gio leaves next year, Rielly would be perfect for a Seattle team that's lacking offensive skills on the blue line. Money certainly won't be an issue for them

Gio goes at the TDL for an amount = to his play up to that point. To a contender I'd guess at least a 1st based on his level of play last year.
Rielly to Seattle for Oleksiak or Dunn and their 1st, and whatever else you could get. I'd prefer Dunn.
