Both ate grossly overpaid, but I’d take Nurse over Hamilton everyday and twice on Sunday……
Hamilton is very well paid, he’s pretty solidly a top ten dman right now. He was an excellent signing for NJ. I think Nurse is stupidly overpaid if he can’t replicate last season, but if he does he’s only like 1.25M overpaid which really isn’t that bad at the end of the day.

Letting rielly walk for nothing will be the nail in the coffin for dubas. Really hope he has another plan.

Teams that are trying to win the cup let players walk all the time. That’s the whole point of the salary cap - good teams lose players and bad teams gain them.

Either we’re trying to win and we keep Rielly…. Or we aren’t and we need to start unloading the core.

You don’t let an asset like that walk. Average ones sure. I don’t care about letting bozak. Hyman etc go.

Who has let a top tier asset go for nothing. And it works out?

We can try to find a cheaper stable lesser replacement. For Reilly on a team that will extend

Teams just sign those kinds of assets. The mediocre ones price themselves out and walk.

You don’t unload your #1 defenseman for futures and also try to win at the same time. Either we go for it with Rielly and hope he signs, or we aren’t trying to win this year, and the Dubas experiment was a failure.

He hasn't walked yet, Jesus. Lots of time for him to re-sign.

And good luck finding a replacement anywhere near Rielly for less than 8-9m a year. Freaking Hamilton just got 9.

I want Rielly signed or traded by the start of the season, I'm fine with taking a step back next season if needed to get a good reset like Tampa in 2016-2017. Either we sign him and awesome, we're good to go, or we flip him and sign a good dman next offseason + have assets.

Anyways,

Muzzin-Brodie
Sandin-Holl
Dermott-Liljegren

isn't that bad, you just need to trade for a better 3 at the deadline like Boston did with Mike Reilly

or sign Sami Vatanen and go:

Muzzin-Holl
Vatanen-Brodie
Dermott-Liljegren/Sandin

Pelech a far better defence first defenseman just signed a multi year deal for $4.75. I would take him & the cap space over Reilly anyday.

But really, how much worse would the Leafs be with a Muzzin or Martinez caliber player replacing MR? I don't think its necessarily a case of either Rielly or picks. There is a deal to be made that doesn't leave the club relying on Sandin or Dermott starting the season in your top 4 so they can avoid the own rental situation and still compete. Their window isn't one year and they can get assets and cap relief without losing or overpaying Rielly. If they want to run a big 4 this is part of it.

see in my mind if Reilly isn’t going to be qb 1 we can replace him with a lesser d that has term and let one one of sandin/mennell take qb duties.

teams like pitt and Calgary have no PMD that can replace gio/letang. Plenty of D signed for 4-5
Million.

Pelech was a RFA though.

Also is $5.75
Reilly is wayyy over rated on these boards. He is not a #1 not even on our team! He is error prone, low iq, has NO shot & dosen't strike fear into the opposition. Granted he is a great skater and home grown talent. so was Hyman & what did he do? Follow the money. I (my opinion) would trade him for a haul and look for a cheaper, defence first defenceman....

Vatanen is a #7 at this point

Lilijgren is am unproven player as is Sandin. Relying on them to be able to replace Rielly is a very tough ask.

Not to mention Dermott was utilized like a #7 last year playing a pitiful 13 minutes a game on the bottom pairing.

We already saw how overworked Holl was on the top pairing and with hard matchups

Rielly should be dealt for a lesser top 4D who has atleast 2 years term preferably 4 years.

Hanafin, Dumba, Cernak, Weegar, Severson etc are players that make sense

Sign and trade Rielly if he wants too much for one of these players + another asset

Oh yeah I totally agree, I’m just pencilling guys in without guessing at who we’d get in a Rielly return. I’d really have it more like

Muzzin-Brodie
K’Andre Miller-Holl
Dermott-Liljegren/Vet

I do think Vatanen is still a 4/5 guy and would be a shrewd signing for some team though but that’s beside the point.

I just didn’t want to guess at what we MIGHT get for Rielly.

If I had to, I’d say a guy like Heinola, Miller, or Dunn would be what you’re looking at, in addition to a first and some small assets. Or maybe Hanifin.

Hanifin + 1st would be a sweet return for Mo.

We all know Dubas won't trade Rielly to down grade the team in his last chance to stay GM.

I still think he will look to make a trade involving Kerfoot +Dermott + ???? (Conditional pick) for Max Domi to plug onto the #1 LW positon. Not saying it's a good move, but I just think its what they wanna do with the crop of players left.

Either that or he stays content until mid season and looks for rental help

Yeah I don’t think he will trade Rielly. I expect Mo to sign here at 8x8 but it isn’t what I’d do.

Idk if they will even resign him, I think if Morgan doesn't agree to a contract before the season starts, they will ride it out to try and save his job.

My hope is management will not allow Dubas to trade more picks, unless there conditional based on playoff success. So if we lose in round 1 or don't even make the playoffs, we keep our 1st rounder

Are we really going to ram Sandin onto the top pp unit right before we have to sign his first post-elc contract? Sounds like creating another cap problem to me.

i think we are. We already did. That’s the point. Sandin was pp1. If Reilly isn’t pp1 there is no point in extending him
