With Kessel retention that's 1.2 mill... plus cap going up 1 mill... so add that on to his 5 million... could you get him at 8 years for 7.25 million?

You say to him you retire here you're a Leaf for life but you have to give up about a million a year.

It's the difference between 58 million and 64 million for 8 x 8 just for an example.

He's already made 30 million over his career plus he'll make pretty much another 60.

I'm sure many people will argue or disagree with this... but I'd prefer 90 million and staying with the team I've been with since the start of my career.

It just blows my mind sometimes that a guy will leave for another 10 million but you already will make 90 million. Not to mention even though he'd still be filthy rich everyone would think you're a legend for taking "less".

It's what all these guys need to be convinced of going forward including the big 4. Those next contracts... you want to win so take a bit less... or see ya later.

A sub $8 mill AAV for Rielly would be masterful work by Dubas given the contracts this offseason.. $8-$8.5 would probably be fairer. Above that is just a gross overpay.

I think it's time to trade Rielly...we don't have the money to pay him, and I don't think we could afford to go into the season without an extension, and lose him for nothing next year.

Funny thing is at the time that Draisaitl contract was an overpay relative to other comparables but he obviously has done a 180 with that.

Unfortunately that ship has already sailed (before or on draft day was the time). Teams almost have their rosters locked up.

Dubas will just let Rielly walk because hes spineless and desperate to keep his job. All Kyle cares about now is making it to the second round so they can justify his extension.

Those 9M+ contracts are such a mess. Two of them were deserved, two were massive overpays, and one was a smaller overpay. Rielly would be closer to the massive overpay camp for me, but its just simply not something we should move forward with if he wants a significant raise. Recoup assets and trade r@pe a team like CBJ/BUF did in their deals.
