The Maple Leafs might not be done after low-risk deals with goalie Petr Mrazek and bargain forwards | The Star
The 29-year-old netminder has a .910 career save percentage, but it was .923 last year and .956 the year before with some very good defensive teams in Carolina.
Mrazek and Campbell are similar: battlers, rather than positionally proficient.
“We like his competitiveness. We like behind the scenes that everything else about him checks out,” said Dubas.
“He was very open about how he sees himself in that partnership with Jack. It’s not just about supporting each other, but pushing one another. That part of it was important to us as well.”
Getting a goalie early seemed important around the NHL on Wednesday, with many finding new homes: Frederik Andersen (Carolina), Philipp Grubauer (Seattle), Martin Jones (Philadelphia), Jonathan Bernier (New Jersey), Jaroslav Halák (Vancouver), James Reimer (San Jose) and Braden Holtby (Dallas).
Mrazek signed for $1.2 million less than Andersen earned last year with the Leafs. That gave Dubas a little bit to play with and Kampf seemed to be the biggest beneficiary, earning a two-year deal at $1.5 million per season.
Kampf can kill penalties, like Hyman, but isn’t a scorer. The four-year veteran had one goal in 56 games last season. He can also play centre and defend the other team’s best players, which may allow Alex Kerfoot to move to the wing on one of the top two lines.
“He’s a centre that’s able to really take on very difficult assignments, both in the penalty kill in terms of defensive-zone starts and drive play up the ice,” said Dubas. “We feel he has tremendous defensive value. Last year the puck didn’t go in for him, but he still had a very positive effect on the puck.”
The 25-year-old Bunting (two years, $950,000 per) is from Scarborough and appears to have taken less to join his hometown team that he might have earned elsewhere. He scored at an extraordinary rate in Arizona — 10 goals in 21 games — but has yet to be an everyday NHLer.
Ditto Gabriel (one year, $750,000), a physical winger whose progressive views on social media in support of LGBTQ+ communities haven’t gone unnoticed.
“I just really like everything that Kurtis is about,” said Dubas.

Dubas said the team building isn’t over. More signings are possible. Trades, too. Some of the better remaining free agents might lower their asking prices.
“I just think we’ve got a great opportunity here for a forward that maybe doesn’t get what they want on the first go-round, that looks at our group and sees an opportunity — particularly a winger,” said Dubas.
“We’re going to continue to look at any avenues we have to improve the roster, so nothing is out of the realm of possibility here.”
