We're not a better team today than we were in May. Still time. But if the core doesnt really show up this time around the changes will be immense.
I don’t really get this?

not sure how good this new goalie is but most here weren’t happy with Anderson for last few seasons, specially in big games

Hyman a good piece but not a game changer, yah he goes into the board but also at 5.5 eww
bogosian 3rd pairing guy

like what did we actually lose?

defence is very solid like last season
We have the guys that are suppose to score for us still?

I do believe there is still more to come from dubas but how much worse are we actually?

now I want and leafs need to get better but worse? Ah

Let's put Bunting at the same minutes and the same shooting percentage as Hyman. 13%. Cut his goal totals in half. He has 5 goals lets say.

He has played 21 games last year, so we will just round and say he paced for 20 goals because that is easy to calculate.

He puts up a 20 goal pace with a 13% shooting percentage playing 16:40 on Arizona. Hyman, if you take out his PK minutes, played around 17:30 of ES/PP time playing mostly with Matthews and Marner.

The X-factor is obviously how well he can play with Matthews/Tavares + Marner/Nylander and how well he translates playing with those guys instead of Keller + Schmaltz, because Hyman is not a 29 goal/63 point pace guy without Matthews + Marner and playing the kind of minutes he was receiving, and I imagine if things go right, Bunting can be better than a 20/15 guy playing with Matthews + Marner.

The other key piece of information: Hyman is getting 5.5 x 7 until he is 36. Bunting is getting 0.95 x 2 until he is 27. I imagine that 4.5 mill difference in cap space more than makes up for the difference between Hyman and Bunting. No cup winning team is giving that Hyman contract out regardless of their cap situation.

I personally think you would have been better off to say I'll take 19 year old Nic Robertson who tore up the OHL with 55 goals in 46 games and toss him out with Matthews and Marner and say that his goal scoring will dampen the loss of Hyman offensively. (now that is not counting rookie mistakes and other issues like style etc. simply replacing his goals and offense).

Why Bunting and not another random NHLer in that same spot... ie If Leafs resigned Galachenyuk and played him with AM and MM would he replace Hyman.. What about tossing Kerfoot of the wing if its all Matthews and Marner carrying the player? There are so many current UFA players that are at least proven NHLers that you could bet on then a small sample size of 20 NHL game Bunting. They say until a drafted player has played at least 100 NHL minimum we can't judge or even call him a successfully NHLer and what kind of player he might be and here we have a 26 year old with 26 games ready to crown him our new #1LWer.

We don't even know if Bunting is an NHL player (sample size so small) and we certainly don't know if he capable of playing on a #1 line in the NHL regardless of his linemates based on that line faces the oppositions best players and Dman pairing and not become a complete liability defensively and how will he impact this linemates. You know very well all players are not equal and not all players are capable of playing a team top line or even the top 6.

By your theory Edmonton should have just signed Bunting for $950k and played him with McDavid, and should have expected the same outcome as if they signed Hyman (a proven #1LW in the NHL) and saved themselves $4.55 mil AAV. :wg: Clearly you understand the flaw in that logic that not just any or some random player can produce equal or then all contracts would be based on who that player plays with and not his personal skillset?

Can I ask if you have even seen Bunting play in an NHL game to make this predictions?

I’ll be honest, none of these guys were on my radar except for Mrazek. I only knew about Bunting because of this forum. I mean I think I realized Chicago had a 4th line centre who was Czech but I didn’t know his name.

Leafs pro scouts are:
Mike Penny
Jim Roque
Tom Watt
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

They’ve been around forever. Did they scout from their TV during the Pandemic. Were these guys on Dubas’ radar before last year?

I hope they are sneaky good shrewd signings.

Yeah, I don't think they've acquired a LW to play with Matthews yet so this is all premature.

Hyman wasn’t a scorer - he scored 15 goals. He rode as a supplementary player on that line. We didn’t have an issue scoring with the players on the roster

If anything Mikheyev, Kerfoot took a step back. Kerfoot should in our top 6 after his playoff showing. Foligno didn’t play a majority of the regular season. We also have this scorer named Nick Robertson.

Can you please quantify all this offense we lost?

when did I say we lost offense? I said Hoffman would’ve been a good pick up at that price.

did you see how many goals we scored in the playoffs? We absolutely need some secondary scoring.

Hoffman >> depth pieces we picked up today that adds up to 4.5

Alright, can we stop with the full meltdown mode act. This roster won the North Division.

We lost Hyman, Bogosian, Freddy, Thornton, Foligno (barely played reg szn)

We brought in Bunting, Kampf, Biega, Dahlstrom, Mrazek

We have Robertson, Liljegren, Brooks, Anderson challenging for roster spots. I’m sorry, but I actually think we are the same/more balanced. The off-season is far from over. We do have contracts moveable in the event of higher caliber offense trade.

Let the team actually fail before calling for ones head. If this is the roster and it makes it over the top because of passing judgement.. it’ll be comical to look back

Run a simple points in + point out. Factor in Hyman totals were inflated..
It has done. Many times. We're not jumping the gun here.

Adding a 4th line player doesn't make us a new team and everyone gets to start from scratch.

Good shot - would be nice on PP

Hoffman to me is like James Neal. Good player, but obviously not well liked wherever he goes. I don't feel like we missed out on him at all. Further compounded by the fact that 4.5m isn't a realistic amount for us to spend on one player right now

I would have done 4.5 mill for one year. Not 3.

For the people who said Tavares helps us win, I think they are mistaken. Nylander wouldn’t have 8 points. he only did that with kerfoot and Galchenyuk and most his points weren’t off of a cycle, so that makes Tavares already hinder his performance

Sensible take. Lot's of time this off-season for sure.

The Leafs definitely need a LW with a track record of being able to play in a big offensive role. Tatar or Saad make sense but their prices and questionable consistency... It'll be tough.
I doubt we are done. There has to be a middle/top 6 player coming likely by trade.

That Foligno contract is brutal. We don't know how severe his injury was in the playoffs, but he didn't look like an NHL level player at all in the games he did play for us in the post season

He was a garbage player before the injury. Dude is not very good.

Boston makes these types of signings once in a while. Remember Matt Belesky ?

But they get hidden by their goal tending and overall play. In my opinion Boston getting a solid goalie in Ullmark still makes the true winner today.

A good goalie an solve and hide a lot of your problems

Pretty confident Dubas is playing hardball with Saad but they are pretty close, would make sense with his previous comments.

Player with presence - check
Remaining UFA - check

Probably just waiting for his price to come down.

Also, still have a feeling something around Kerfoot and Dvorak will happen.

Arizona is cleaning house, both players available, teams have been speculated to be talking to each other, albeit the rumour was for Keumper

How many times is enough to call for ones head?
