Yes, and 35 year olds with tons of miles on them and an injury history are guaranteed to be good in years 3-4-5 as well, right? And there’s a mechanism in the CBA to force a player to honor a 5 year old handshake agreement to retire in year 6? And somehow any of this has less risk than renting a 34 year old for one playoff run? Poor Leafs fans, always being picked on. Has nothing to do with their management just not being real good.

This isn't rocket science. This is nothing new

We finally get him after everyone else had him . Hopefully he still has a few years left in the tank.

Because he's not on a 35+ contract, I wouldn't be shocked if its a longer deal at a lower cap hit where the last few years a ridden out on LTIR
Dubas picked Brodie over Tanev when they were both UFAs in 2020

giving 7 years to a 35-year old top 4 D shot blocker is insane
Funny that many posters here were leery about signing a late-20s Zach Hyman long term due to the style he plays causing body wear and tear, now this? I wouldn't give Tanev anything longer than 3 years.

I take it you don't watch much hockey outside of the Oilers.

He was absolutely incredible matching up against MacKinnon and Eichel.

Wasn't as good against Edmonton but those were some brutal matchups and he more than met the challenge.
hello, Where did Tanev play before Dallas? and before that? ....The pacific division. I've seen a lot of Tanev over the years and I saw him in Dallas in the playoffs.

Got thoroughly abused by Edmonton in the WCF.

Enjoy, Toronto!

And McDavid was shutdown by Gustav Forsling to a goose egg in games 6 and 7 with the cup on the line.

Cherry picking is dumb, Tanev was great against MacKinnon, Rantanen and Eichel...had a meh series just as the rest of his team did against the Oilers.

This isn't rocket science. This is nothing new

Teams handing out poorly conceived contracts to aging veterans? No, it isn’t. It’s also almost always proven to be as bad of an idea as everyone thought it would be. No one is singling out Toronto - again, it’s just a persecution complex from Leafs fans - Rangers did it with Redden, Richards, etc.

No one said it’s rocket science. It’s nothing new for the consensus being it’s a bad idea… and generally turning out correct either.

The Leafs have proven to be masters of this. You are acting like Tanev isn't aware of how this works. He gives us as many years as he can and when he is no longer an NHLer, he vanishes like every other vet the Leafs have done this with over the last decade.

Acting like this is some terrible decision, you have to be purposefully trying to frame it that way.

Has he signed a long term deal?

Or are you just pre-shitting on the leafs based on a “poorly conceived” fantasy contract you’ve contrived in your head?

How much has that “mastery” gotten the Leafs in… the past century? Cope harder.
