Speculation: Seth Jones says he's talking with the Blackhawks about the possibility of a trade

If it's at the deadline, we're probably fine.

Heiskanen - Acquired RHD
Harley - Lyubushkin
Lindell - Ceci
Bichsel, Smith, Petrovic

Fair enough. I was just thinking...in the context of a deep playoff run, you probably don't want to have to see much, or any of Smith/Petrovic if you can avoid it. Petrovic can just stay buried unless needed. Bischel is also a guy that you can easily still "stash" and bring back come playoffs if you have to to build in an extra rung of quality depth. But especially with guys dealing with injuries...i'd be looking for additional "insurance" depth that can at least play at a Top-6 NHL D sort of level. But maybe that's just me.

Jets might be interested. If Chicago ate some of that money.

Why is Seth Jones waiving his full NMC to go live in Winnipeg for the next 5 years?

He won't waive his NMC for Canada.

Dallas, Florida, Tampa, and Vegas are probably the only places he'd go. Maybe Colorado if he feels like he can win there and they're the only place willing to take him.

Jones’ dad works for the Denver Nuggets and Seth lived in Denver from ages 3-12.

Joe Sakic taught him how to skate.

He would most certainly waive for the Avs.

The problem with Jones to Toronto is they have very little cap to work with. Not to mention Dewar and Jarnkrok are about to come off LTIR.

From Toronto’s perspective, they’d have to send multiple of Domi, Jarnkrok, Kampf, Reaves, Timmins and Benoit to make it work. I could also see them sniffing around Donato in a package deal.

So with some Jones retention it’s possible, but complicated. I’m not gonna even try a proposal, but someone else can go for it if they wish.

Marner.

With the short term cap projections a lot of movement that wasn't possible before could be more feasible now. Jones isn't worth nearly what he got on that deal and has never really been cut out for carrying a blueline but there's always going to a market for experienced RHD that can not shit themselves moving the puck.

Since the crowd turned on him and was boo'ing him every time he touched the puck a few weeks ago, he stepped it up and has been playing fantastic, best as a Hawk. This is what he should have been like his whole tenure as a Hawk.

Kind of makes me feel ripped off as a fan, he has not been putting forth full effort and it took this to wake him up. Id be wary of trading for him he can go back to phoning it in mode very easily.

I know from a cap perspective it makes sense to include Manson in a Jones deal for the Avs, but it doesn't really from a logic perspective.

The entire point of acquiring Jones would be to improve/get deeper at D. This would mean moving Manson to the bottom pair. Upgrading from Manson to Jones without improving the 3rd pair isn't worth taking on the extra $3M at least (for this year) as it would necessitate another upgrade likely at another cap increase for the bottom pair anyway.

Manson also has a modified NTC this year of 12 teams, which would likely include the Hawks. The more logical move is to add Jones, keep Manson, and move Manson in the off-season.

Manson has roots in Illinois.

Rs want to dump Zib, will go half max
he will likely not waive we think exceptions might be NYI, BOS

Jones + 2nd to NYR for Zib at half + expiring Lindgren full pop 4.5
Zib then retained by CHI another 2-ish m per, and flipped to relocation of choice for short term cap dumps

3rd team gets super cheap Zib
Hawks get cap relief
Rs get less headache and mystery box in Jones

thoughts?

Why would New York do this deal?

I still don't quite get it. Seth Jones is a good player and yes, he is overpaid, but it's not like the Blackhawks are up against the cap and won't be for some time even when it comes to re-signing Bedard. I know the report came out that he was approached if he were open to a trade and of course Jones confirmed that he was open to the idea of winning, but I don't see him traded where the primary benefit for the Blackhawks is cap relief. They don't need cap space and Jones is still a good player despite his tendency to look awful for a game or 2.

The only way I see him moving is if the Hawks get real assets in return whether it's draft picks or young players. He isn't Trouba and the Hawks have 17 players signed for next season and would be ~$12M below the floor WITH JONES AND HIS $9.5M contract.

Don’t forget the avs passed on Seth Jones in the draft. Now they ultimately picked the right player in mackinnon but I remember at that time Seth Jones was the top ranked North American skater ahead of Nate and there were people who believed colorado wasn’t going to pass on the hometown kid. Who knows if Seth is still bitter they passed on him.

WTF would Hawks do this?

We are 2nd worst team in NHL with Bedard only notable coming RFA in future, We dont need cap relief

This many years later for a hockey scouting decision? I seriously doubt it.

I could see the Flames being all over this, but I doubt they fit the criteria of "contenders" that he's looking for.
It definitely wouldn't be his first choice. That said, if the market is baren, then he may be willing to go to a bubble team like Calgary because they're at least not a bottom feeder. But I'm not sure I would want to pay the cost, I really don't think it will be as cheap in terms of assets as some think... Seth has quickly become underrated the last couple years and put him on a pair with someone like Weegar and I think he turns things around.
