Am I the only one who thinks this is a good deal and Nick will be the key between winning an elimination game than losing one.
Everyone in BJs play like crap this year. Beside, we don’t need Nick to score regularly just need him to score those big ones.

I think this costs a 1st primarily because of the retention. Other teams probably weren't quite offering that first round pick I bet, but it came with less retention.

There's some risk here with his age, I agree, but he brings a lot to the table.
100%. Don't dislike the trade at all, really like the player. After living through previous regimes, trading a 1st always irks me but a 25-32 overall pick is lucky to yield a middle-six forward anyways based on probability.

Undeniably a steep price and more than I would have liked to see us pay, but you absolutely go for it in a year like this with favourable matchups and a legitimate shot at a cup. If the Leafs had a weak prospect pool, i'd be against this move, but very happy to see them add to the roster without subtracting Sandin/Robertson/Amirov/Liljegren, which is a better top 4 than we've had since the Big 3 were breaking onto the scene.

TOR can afford to do this.

We better hope that Foligno is willing to re-sign next year for about 3x 2.5m and play at a "reasonable" level for the next 3 years, until he's 35. That's about the only way we're getting the value out of him that Dubas gave up.

After everything you wrote yesterday on the subject of being all-in, I'm legitimately shocked by the negative tone you're taking to this acquisition.
This move helps us on many levels.

Tons of options and possible variations of that defensive/shutdown bottom 6 line now. Foligno, Mikheyev, Hyman, Nash, Kerfoot, Engvall, Simmonds & the depth guys like Noesen, Anderson; gonna be great for matchups.

Team can play Hyman wherever they want too.

Foligno is a good player, great character player, amazing role players, and a model teammate. He will step into that room with his experience and grit and instantly make you guys better. I think he's a big piece to your potential playoff success and I wish you all nothing but the best with him. I hope he plays well for you and I hope that you all get to appreciate what he brings to the table.

Wishing nothing but the best for ya'll and Foligno. Go get it.
Thank you :thumbu:

You guys freaking out over a first are crazy.

we almost don’t need it and Foligno is the kind of player we need.

We have so much skill as it is.

Simmonds, Foligno, Hyman, Muzzin, Bogoasian make us tougher to play against
Agreed. We won’t see the benefits of that first for at least 3 years anyway, if the player makes it to the NHL at all. Who cares?

Frankly when considering we had to overpay for the massive retention, it’s not too bad.

Since the price has been set for 25% retention being worth a 4th, it essentially works out to having to pay 2 extra 4ths worth of value to Columbus for the 50% retention.

I’m sure with no retention, it could’ve been pulled off for a 2nd & 3rd. Having 2 extra 4ths added into the cost made it a 1st & 4th
That's the other aspect so many posters are missing/ignoring - retention costs big. CBJ knew we wanted the player but didn't have the money to do and required heavy retention. We paid handsomely for it, and while I hate the cost, you have to give up to get, unless you're dealing with Bob Murray

I know its probably against the grain, but I don't like it.

Foligno is a fine player and should fit in nicely on the 3rd/4th line, but we're filled with guys that fit those spots. Trading a 1st for a guy that really isn't a game changer seems..... not good? Feels like a Plekanec/Boyle pick up more than it would have spending that 1st+ on a Hall-type.

Either way though it happened. He's a good player, and I'm much happier we traded the first (hopefully very late) in a bad draft than any of our top-4 prospects. Just think there were better guys to acquire.

Umm not being a leafs fan it’s a dangerous place for me to post but you are not filled with guys like Folingo when playing a road game and the other team drops it’s first line on your third line his ability to not take a beating in that battle will pay off huge in the playoffs
I am sure he has slowed down with age but he was one of my fave all time sens he gives it everything he has.

This!
I like Foligno. I think he is a good pick up. And I’m okay with using our first to improve the team.

But the value on this trade wasn’t good. And if you point that out some posters here seem to think it means you prefer draft picks over winning.

Teams always overpay at the deadline. That's the game when one team is adding to try and win a Cup.

I'd rather be the team overpaying than the team getting a good return during a failed season.

I think bolstering the third line is just what Leafs needed. Our top 6 is set and our bottom 6 is set too now.

Hyman Matthews Marner
Galchenyuk Tavares Nylander
Mikheyev Foligno Kerfoot
Nash Spezza Simmonds
Thornton Engvall

After everything you wrote yesterday on the subject of being all-in, I'm legitimately shocked by the negative tone you're taking to this acquisition.
This move helps us on many levels.

Read back through my posts, I was the most vocal anti-Foligno person in that thread. Every other post talked about how I didn't want him in exchange for our 1st round pick

Upon some digging, the offensive black hole label seems to be a result of typical analytical ignorance; judging players by the what, rather than the why and how. His individual Corsi, shots, goals and primary assists are all within his typical range with consideration for his aging curve. However, his teammates on-ice shooting percentage (on-ice shooting percentage minus Foligno's goals and shots) is down to a career low 3.9% and as a result he has zero secondary assists. And of course his relative shot and goals against numbers are excellent as always.

Where were all the crappy draft, let’s give up a 1st crowd yesterday? Too funny.

We over paid, but it shows we are all in, he does make us better immediately. Also, Dubas has really evolved his thinking of how you build a team, I guess grit and size are important after all. I give him credit for being pragmatic and have faith in him moving forward, despite this price for a Foligno.

Now let’s go win a cup and he’s a genius for eternity.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I very clearly was talking about our 1st not being a big deal to trade for days now. Definitely talked about it in the Trade Deadline thread earlier today as well.

I am ok with the deal, we had to do something, its time for this team to take the next step. If Dubas does nothing this team has excuses if they lose early. This is our year to make the the eastern conference finals with the all canadian division.

This deal I hope helps Tavares game, he needs Hyman on his line. Foligno should play with Matthews + Marner.

I hope to see more moves done, time to go all in. We are like the Chicago Blackhawks when Toews/Kane were same stage in their career.

This is what makes me think dubass giving a a first and two other draft picks for players for a month or two is stupid.
Team still needs defense.
