I can't speak for anyone else, but I very clearly was talking about our 1st not being a big deal to trade for days now. Definitely talked about it in the Trade Deadline thread earlier today as well.
Fair enough.

I’m referring to what people thought Foligno brings. Hey, I’m excited to add him, but I’m just speaking to cost. I’m assuming there was a bidding war.

Read back through my posts, I was the most vocal anti-Foligno person in that thread. Every other post talked about how I didn't want him in exchange for our 1st round pick

That aside, it's still a strange position to take in juxtaposition with everything else you said.

Oh no doubt, there must have been. I'll be interested to see if we find out who we beat out for him..

We better hope that Foligno is willing to re-sign next year for about 3x 2.5m and play at a "reasonable" level for the next 3 years, until he's 35. That's about the only way we're getting the value out of him that Dubas gave up.

I'm lukewarm on the deal, but this a terrible way to look at it. If the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup, how many people will be concerned about the "value"?

I think the price is steep and I hate giving up high draft picks, but if the Leafs were going to make a move for a forward he's near the top of my list in terms of guys thought to be available. And as much as I hate giving up high draft picks, if you're ever going to do it this is the year. I do wonder if they could have got more mileage out of the 1st but again, it's not just about getting the best player but the best fit and I think Foligno will be a very nice addition.

Just wanna say..... see dubas this is what happens when you f***ing overpay on the contracts and not enough cap left; when you ask others to retain salary the price of the trade just goes up

I don’t understand how people are upset with this trade

1. This is easiest route the Leafs are going to have to the finals in the next X amount of years. It makes complete sense to go for it

2. This years draft is a complete crap shoot

3. Foligno fills a role that only Hyman is serving right now. You need gritty, physical players who operate in tighter checking situations in the playoffs. Lacking those players is part of the reason this group hasn’t won a playoff round yet

to those who are saying that grit is unneeded in hockey I suggest you go watch the NBA

Not really. I'm all for going "all in", but that doesn't mean you take a washed up 33 year old who skates around and takes penalties.

IMO, Alex Iafallo could have been had for around the same price and that would be a much better add, IMO.

Teams always overpay at the deadline. That's the game when one team is adding to try and win a Cup.

I'd rather be the team overpaying than the team getting a good return during a failed season.
I’d rather be the team that doesn’t over pay and wins personally.
The market was set with the Palmeri/Zajac deal. It cost the Islanders less and they got more back.
I’m comfortable with the fact that prices are higher at the deadline. It doesn’t mean you have to give up more than you should.
Look if we go on and win the cup no one will care what it cost but there were better deals out there for the price we paid.

Line #1 - Hyman
Line #3 - Foligno
Line #4 - Simmonds

Almost each line up front has someone that can play a nasty game now.

I'm feeling pretty confident that's not how it's gonna line up.

I think Foligno will end up with Tavares and Nylander, and Hyman is going to make our 3rd line a force.

For all the Hyman comparisons one question I have is:

is the 33 year old Folingo close to as fast as Hyman? Very big part of Hyman game both on the force checking and supporting his speedy linemates is his good speed

He's absolutely nothing like Hyman today.
