despite the fact that I don't really agree with this, aren't Staal and Lindgren also touted as "big, physical" defenders?
The conversation was regarding the future. The poster clearly did not assume that Lindgren is with the team.

I'm really not all that concerned about finding a big, physical, defenseman. These guys are not that hard to find. What we do need is a defenseman like Hampus Lindholm who is just an elite 2-way defenseman who can carry his own pairing. Maybe Fox can be that guy in the future.

Trouba for Lindholm?

Really? I completely disagree. I think they're extremely hard to find, especially in this day and age where solid skating is a pre-requisite.

I hope he wants to stay here in the worst way. I'm afraid we'll lose him in the summer to Philly. It's just total speculation, I have NO idea but I know he loves the Eagles, and is from Philly. What sucks is Skjei got the contract we should have saved for a D man like Tony D.

DeAngelo is RFA, why would we lose him to Philly? Also, Skjei contract is (easily) movable if necessary.

I bet he will have a 3 or 4 point game against the Fishsticks in the next two weeks . I had said back a few weeks ago he would have a monster game eventually and that 70 points was quite attainable with PP time . Tremendous OFFENSIVE talent . Maybe Miller will be the ticket with him .

Sorry, this is conjecture. I believe that if he could have been traded, he would have And as for when was the right time to commit, hindsight is nice. There was nothing wrong with wanting to see another solid year from him, production wise and attitude wise.

I’m not bashing the decision like it’s a huge mistake Gorton should be chided for. I understand why Gorton did what he did. I’m just saying that I would have found a way to sign Tony long term and would have given up assets to move Namestnikov. You can call it conjecture but I can confidently say that tying Namestnikov to a late round pick and shipping him out would have been possible. He was a solid player in 18-19, started this year very slowly, and still garnered a 4th after a very slow start. Many people suggested moving more aggressively to clear space. I think it’s doubtful Gorton did that given the return. Signing DeAngelo to a better deal was certainly a possibility.

That is a different tale. I cannot see half of the defense being smallish puckmovers.
I agree with you, but in the future I do think the NHL will be heading this way. Or maybe it just seems like that because we have a surplus of legit, small, puck-moving D, while other teams may not have that. In any case,

Miller - Trouba
Fox - ADA
Robertson/Lindgren/Rykov - Lundkvist/Jones

is shaping up to be a nice D core.

I say move Keane, one of Robertson/Lindgren/Rykov, and one of Lundkvist/Jones for help on offense. I like all those d-men but we just have too many. I can see Gorton’s plan coming along. Draft a ton of d-men, and just trade the surplus for forwards, since you can get an easier read on forwards when they’re 20-21, as opposed to d-men. Or just trade for a veteran forward.

yep there is alot of potential there this is where the need for patience comes in.

I think Zadorov would be a really good fit for us
No. The tough, mean left handed defencemen to acquire from the Avs was Nemeth but he signed for Detroit this summer.

Nemeth is one of the exceedingly few pure defensive defencemen whose play translates to an overall improvement in shot metrics and goals. When he is on the ice shots move to the perimeter and are fewer in total, high danger chances against cease to exist.

When Tony was holding out, I wrote a post about coming in and making the team regret having to give a 1 year bridge. He's doing just that.

He's probably going to earn another $12-$15M over what he would have if he signed a multi-year deal in September.

This is a byproduct of poor cap management by the Rangers (due to the limited space), and Tony doing what he does.

Time to get paid.

He has so much talent and plus we have so much talent now to play with on the PP and more maturing/improving it is not a stretch to think that he could have a couple of 80 point seasons in his future ....he oozes confidence . When our club as a whole gets better he is going to really take off .

That pass off the back boards he made to kreider is something most defenseman only dream about trying let alone executing

again, without sounding like a broken record, he’s perhaps the best passer on the team. His vision is top notch.

Tony’s gonna Tony when it comes
to defensive gaffs that’s a given, but he’s so off the charts offensively it really isn’t an issue anymore.

Sometimes everything just finds the back of the net and every pass is a goal, but he’s been doing this all season.

A couple of those goals were legit snipes too.

IDK about the bad cap management. I meant it's indisputable that we haven't managed the cap all the great, but I'm not really sure if we had any intention of giving Tony a significant extension even if we had the space. I truly think it was the organization being leery of DeAngelo and whether he'd continue to stay the course, and they were overly-cautious. And that itself is of course up for review and criticism, but I'm just not sure if cap management/cap space was as big of a deal as people make it out to be. JMO.

Great post. That pass was elite and a few of those goals were sharp shooting. The Rangers have to determine if he’s on his best behavior for a contract or is this the real player. He looks really fantastic.

.

we all hate bridge deals but a contract is a two way street. TD was likely was looking for a lot more long term than the Rangers were offering. Based on his history it’s tough for the Rangers to commit. Especially considering the pipeline.

Now, TD looks real good and does this make Trouba expendable? His full NTC doesn’t kick in until after this season.
