That's what people are saying. I'm still waiting for the Sharks to confirm the deal. They've pretty much confirmed every other deal, but not this one...

edit: NVM, Sharks FB now posting it, and yes, two thirds went to Vegas.

The cold, unemotional take here is that this trade makes total sense, we got off a bad contract and got a 1st and a prospect to do so while we are tanking, massively opening up our ability to be flexible going forward

The fan take is, Jesus f***ing Christ, we sent my favorite player to my most hated team while we are dead last and they are defending champions, which we didn't need to do to help the tank because, again, we are dead last

This is actually a super cold and smart move by Mike Grier, it took a lot of balls to do this, and it makes total sense

Also, I hate it so God damn much, and f*** you if we never win a cup in your tenure, it's on sight, Mike

Why wouldn't it be? Everyone is still signed except for Hanifin and Marchy, and Stephenson, but MArtinez is off the books. They can easily bring back Marchy and Hertl takes the place of Chandler. Hell, they could probably make it work with both Hanifin and March coming back.

Yup. I'm less mad at the returns but rather the fact this is a full blown "We plan to be as bad as possible for xxx". Like, ideally you do this the year or two after winning, not in Y5 of being complete ass.

The entire future of this orgnization actually hinges on them getting Celebrini or not. They will be the 5th or 6th most popular Bay Area team at the start of next season otherwise.

It Logan is done, and it's really starting to look like he is, there's no reason not to keep Hertl even if it's not the smartest business decision.

They already are.

Never forget the 2016 Cup Finals vs. NBA finals. Sharks locally peaked (not averaged) a 10 share (10 share means 10% of all Bay Area Households are watching) during SCF, in Game 6. Warriors averaged (not peaked) a 40 share during 2016 NBA finals locally. I don't care how many games the Warriors won that year, nor who they were playing, the Sharks were in their first ever Cup final and didn't even peak (let alone average) half the Bay Area viewing audience for Warriors.

Remember when Boston had 3 first rounders in a row in one of the GOAT drafts?

That’s what’s going to happen to us next year, but 1-2-3 OA once Vegas and Pit accidentally tank.

And it’ll go the same way. We will somehow mess up all 3 picks. Shorks hockey.

I agree there would have been great utility in keeping Hertl as a mentor and insulator going forward

My problem isn't with him as a player, but his contract would have made maneuvering a lot trickier going forward

It opens up a whole world of possibilities to be off most of his money, and we'll get gradual rollbacks on the cap when Burns, Vlasic and Karlsson expire

I just don't want to see Hertl in a Golden Knights jersey, it's so f***ing f***ed up

My issue isn’t trading Hertl. My issue is retaining AND adding TWO third round picks. For a late first and prospect that is projected as a 3rd liner.

The amount of “how can you be mad, the Sharks are meant to be bad and they’re doing that” takes is ridiculous. Making the team worse doesn’t mean getting fleeced.

Well funny enough, I made a joke randomly an hour ago that El Paso will be getting the Sharks in 2030, so congratulations! :laugh:

You realize that Mark Stone, Hertl, and Eichel are all extremely injury prone? They do not have the depth to back them up. They are going to lose Mantha, Amadio, and Carrier as well. The depth will just not be there next year.

Right trading in division is supposed to bring a premium. We don't even seem to be trying to get one.

If the team can't connect with the community on the ice, then they should be trying to do so off the ice. You know why the Knights were immediately popular in vegas despite it not being a hot market? The shooting happened and the team immediately found ways to connect and comfort a grieving community. No one knew who the players were but they immediately became heroes to the community. Fans showed up to show their support like the team did for them when they needed it.

But the Sharks have Lambo drivin Logan Couture showing up every now and then.
