Confirmed with Link: Tomas Hertl 17% retained, 2025 3rd, 2027 3rd to Vegas for C David Edstrom, 2025 1st

Our Nieuwendyk for Iginla moment in history

Edstrom will become Kopitar right?

And then we all live happily ever after...

I'd rather say Auston Matthews or Brayden Point instead of Kopitar, since, as we all were pleading for back then, we should have drafted Kopitar. Seeing Kopitar's name makes me want to throw things.

And then Vegas tanks next year and we get 2025 #1 overall pick who ends up being a generational talent. :D

Usually using retention increases the return…. Instead the Sharks are sending two 3rd round picks!

What flexibility did I want? You know it’d be nice next season to be able to pick up a pick to retain salary on a deal as a third party.

Or two make a better deal for a rental…

Sharks have less draft picks and no retention slots after trading their best player.

Grier got absolutely fleeced.
So let me make sure i understand this.

1. Retaining does increase the return. The Sharks spent 2 3rds and retained presumably to either upgrade the 1st into that 1 instead of a 2, OR get a better prospect.

2. Youd rather save the retention spot, ignore the 2025 1st to pick up.... a fourth rounder? Which was the going rate for salary retention this year.

The Sharks have 1 less pick, since we upgraded that 2025 3rd into a 1st, while lost a 3rd in 2027 and picked up Enstrom whos less than 12 months removed from being a 1st.

Enstrom is a decent prospect, probably a 5-6 prospect in our pool. Why on earth would you rather a mystery box. HE COULD EVEN BE A TOP 5 PICK

Thinking about this some more I still hate that we gave up 2 thirds and out most popular player to Las Vegas of all teams. Maybe this does become a decent deal in the future but this hurts.

I don’t know if I think Grier should be fired or not. I am still worried about the long term future of this team and I think everyone from a fan base standpoint should be as well.

the "value" is the opportunity cost of Hertl's contract. He would've been on the books for $8m for years down the road including into hte period where the team should be getting better. This might've been the last decent chance to get out from under that plus Hertl has an NMC that gave him almost complete control of his destination.

That's the thing that you have to embrace as the positive. 34-35 year old Hertl making $8m while continuing to decline on balky knees is not a good thing.

With this deal you've only got Cooch (who could get LTIR'd given that it feels like a very real possibility his career might be in jeopardy) and Vlasic (who's only got one more year on his contract that the team can just eat without worry) and suddenly they're out from under all of the ponderous contracts inherited from the previous regime.
Well put; this post deserves a sticky.

Lol you think Vegas is all of a sudden gonna become a lottery team as early as 2025. That's some weapons-grade copium right there.
lmao thats my typo. not even related to the 1st rounder though so good reading skills.

I meant to say that if we get a 4th for retaining on someone, they might turn into a Top 5 "Sharks prospect pool" prospect. Not a top 5 pick.

So weird seeing all of the complaints, from people who wanted us to get worse now, and better in the future. I give Greir a B for the deadline, very suprised at the negative sentiment I have been seeing.

Yes, the retention is not ideal. If we held onto him, and next year he got another knee injury, then youliterally have an anchor on your hands. Good on Greir for not only extracting value out of Hertl, but also downgrading in net for next year so that we can tank better.

You cannot have the best of both worlds, to be better later, we have to be worse now. We could very well pick 1st overall this year, and have 2 great chances at picking first next year. Lets f***ing go Mike.

They can't, they will have to be making major cuts before the start of next year (a year we just happen to own the 1st round pick).
Exactly. The Vegas roster next year is not going to look close to what it looks like this year.
