Confirmed with Link: Tomas Hertl 17% retained, 2025 3rd, 2027 3rd to Vegas for C David Edstrom, 2025 1st

Yes, we should over pay other, worse players for insulation and leadership

Those other, worse players having never been top line centers in the league at any point

And no, I dont think you hand the keys to a 20 year old with zero pro experience, that's how you make a team into the Taylor Hall era Oilers, you bring those kids into an environment where they aren't relied upon to do absolutely everything for their team and have veterans who can pick up after their shortcomings

Nevermind, I take it all back, this trade is good, actually
The point of overpaying those older worse players is that their contracts will expire before they become a problem and we're trying to finish as low in the standings as possible so their being worse is a feature, not a bug.

We just traded dicks with New Jersey - brought in Blackwood from NJ and trade Big Kahk to them. Nice.

After all this if the Sharks don’t beat out Chicago for last then there is no God.

Ideally we're done trying to finish as low as possible before Smith and Co. graduate to the league

We should be tanking this year and next year, and then Smith comes up for the 2025-26 season along with top picks from the last 2 drafts and our graduated prospects and THAT'S when we add the vets to insulate them

We don't want to still be tanking with our prospects on the roster, all that does is create an acceptance of losing while wasting the first years of their ELCs, we need to follow the Shanahan model, not the Tambellini model

If the 2x thirds are going to Vegas, Grier needs to be fired immediately.

The retention f***s flexibility next season and the teams ends up with less picks?
i mean that slot was always destined to be used on Hertl/Couture. what flexibility did you want? to use it next year instead?

Its not like he used that slot to retain on Granlund to move a 3rd to a 2nd

With Couture possibly done or at least may not be around for a while, this is truly going to be Eklund and, soon, Smith’s team.

I guess I’m confused like — is this really the best prospect we could get for Hertl? And we had to add the 3rds? I get he has term but…

You really don't understand why people are upset? Trading our most likeable player who we all saw grow up to the most unlikeable team in the cap era?
One that Grier has stated would not be traded unless he wanted out. So basically no matter what unless Grier decided to hold Hertl hostage in San Jose against his wishes, we were losing Hertl. And then it is just a matter of time finding a team that fits into Hertl and his NMC stipulations, so this was a team Hertl wanted to go to also.

If we luck into Celebrini, we could have expedited the rebuild, but now without any half-ass decent forwards to shelter the kids, the would have no choice but to keep them sheltered still. At this point I'm all for Smith and Musty returning to the NCAA and the O respectively.

I don't have any attachment to Hertl. I don't care about Vegas. I just want the team to get good value and better and right now, it feels like Hertl and 2 3rds for a low 1st, a bottom 6 prospect and 17% of Hertl's salary isn't good value.

the "value" is the opportunity cost of Hertl's contract. He would've been on the books for $8m for years down the road including into hte period where the team should be getting better. This might've been the last decent chance to get out from under that plus Hertl has an NMC that gave him almost complete control of his destination.

That's the thing that you have to embrace as the positive. 34-35 year old Hertl making $8m while continuing to decline on balky knees is not a good thing.

With this deal you've only got Cooch (who could get LTIR'd given that it feels like a very real possibility his career might be in jeopardy) and Vlasic (who's only got one more year on his contract that the team can just eat without worry) and suddenly they're out from under all of the ponderous contracts inherited from the previous regime.

Usually using retention increases the return…. Instead the Sharks are sending two 3rd round picks!

What flexibility did I want? You know it’d be nice next season to be able to pick up a pick to retain salary on a deal as a third party.

Or two make a better deal for a rental…

Sharks have less draft picks and no retention slots after trading their best player.

Grier got absolutely fleeced.

Well, look, we have so much cap space this summer we could likely get a top 6 center to help with the sheltering. Honestly, Granlund has done such a good job being a mentor that he and Couture might be enough.

Reading more about Edstrom — he seems like exactly the player Grier and Quinn want:

“One of the most impressive abilities of David Edstrom’s game has to be his competitive level in the defensive zone. He works harder than most on the backcheck and along the boards he is able to put a stop to many attacks.“

We got so many Swedes.

It blows my mind that in just 18 months Grier has accomplished exactly what needed to be done: traded Karlsson, Burns, Meier and Hertl. Couture would probably be gone too if he hadn't missed the entire season.

As I've said since before Grier was hired the specific returns in these trades are far less significant than actually making them. Solidifying the team as the worst in the league for draft position purposes and creating maximum flexibility by clearing their contracts was always going to be far more important than what we got back.

But to get back three 1sts plus two other recent 1st rounders in Mukhamadullin and Edstrom and useful roster players like Zetterlund and Granlund is a major coup. DW left such a stinking mess that I thought it didn't even matter who succeeded him as GM because cleanup alone would be a half decade job. Grier is already 90% of the way there.

Honestly this trade wouldn't hurt as bad if it wasn't to literally the most unlikeable team since the 2011 Canucks

And having the opportunity to benefit from a possible Vegas implosion with an unprotected 1st round pick is pretty sweet.

Personally I just don't really care who wins the Cup if the Sharks aren't in the playoffs. Not that I won't still watch every game I can, it just doesn't matter to me who wins if the Sharks don't have a chance.

"Trading our #1c in his prime with retention AND draft picks for a late first in a draft 2 years from now is good, actually"

That's basically my view. I do think there needs to a premium put on trading within division because I honestly believe there were or could have been other offers in the same realm. I think it was a last minute decision because Kelly called and Grier basically just took the first offer knowing he didn't have time to work the phones.

That's just my opinon though. He panic accepted.
