Confirmed with Link: Tomas Hertl 17% retained, 2025 3rd, 2027 3rd to Vegas for C David Edstrom, 2025 1st

i was starting to come around on the value of the deal emotions aside

finding out the thirds were going and not coming was like another gut punch, but alright

anyways we're going to be so ungodly awful for the next 3 -> 5 -> ? years. it's almost frightening.

we're turning into that classic example of those teams that were constantly bottoming out and had top pick after top pick completely bust because they were asked to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders.

you can say what you like, but Hertl was quite obviously an invaluable mentor/crutch for Eklund

hoping for the best, it's all we can do at this point

It might be that. We are recording after Grier’s media availability later today

shout out to you guys.

If i had to record a sharks related youtube episode itd quickly turn into sad ramblings about how this is the league forcing the trade as a final apology for the vegas playoff game against sj.

Vegas' biggest area of need was a top-6 center, they now added one

They aren't missing the playoffs, so that pick isn't going to be in the top half of the draft, best case scenario is we find a gem late in the 1st, but you just can't expect that to happen consistently

I never said it was "worthless", I said it wasn't substantial value, and to me it needed to be great value to be worth helping Vegas

But it's no big deal, it's not like Mike traded them their starting goalie on their cup winning team a year ago, I'm sure Hertl won't be of value to VGK
Don't worry, I expect Grier to trade that first for two 3rds in 2027 and 2028

Do people forget we have Will Smith? Jesus
Seriously. For god's sake, no offense to Hertl, but you want to hold onto a decent happy go lucky 2C as the "face of your franchise" instead of turning the team over to the kid torching college hockey as a freshman, Eklund who's looking more dangerous every game, a likely top 3 pick in the 2024 draft, etc?

Of course we need veterans to surround them but they certainly don't need to be making 8 million a year until age 36. We have tons of cap space this offseason, go overpay some Kyle Okposos and Warren Foegeles on shorter term deals to provide leadership.

It's the 2025 draft not this years. They are going all in for this season and will need to be moving on from impact players before the start of next season, and they could easily miss the playoffs.

Them paying a washed Hertl over 6 million for the next 6 years could easily be their Karlsson trade that finally shuts the window closed for good.

the biggest thing is Hertls torn both ACLs and is out now with another knee injury.

TBH i think theres some concerns around the league about how long he can keep playing. i dont think holding onto him for another year would improve his value.

But LTIR players are a plus for Vegas, just means more acquisitions at next years deadline

Garbage Tier Grier strikes again! At least he’s consistent at being bad with big trades, of course this could end up like the Duschene trade was for Colorado

Are we really sure Hertl is going to decline so much? He's 30, not 35.
He's already declined from his peak. And he will be 35 (realistically probably like 40+) by the time the Sharks are good again so what's the point of keeping him and risking decline to the point of untradeability?

So, effectively Hertl (17% retained) for Edström, then the 3rd in '27 to upgrade the high 3rd in '25 to a low 1st in '25.

I'm sure Hertl wanted out and this had to be done, but it sure is rough. Rough as f***.

He's 30 but he's on two wrecked knees and wasn't a burner to start with. There's no telling how much his value will crater as the league continues to move to a quicker, more uptempo style of play and his skating degrades at a precipitous pace.

Vegas specifally targets guys with injury concerns for this exact reason. Two years from now Hertl will probably be permanently on LTIR and Vegas will have 8.1 million more to play with.

I would still wait until 2025 before spending big in FAs, but I think in addition to the assets we got back for Hertl we could spend his cap on more production then he is actually giving us (in 2-3 years).

Not to take a shot at Hertl but was he really a 1C these days? He's a 65 point player that does more then the points show, but that's probably a good 2C.

I don’t really know how to feel about this but Hertl quite obviously wanted out and Grier obliged. What’s the scouting report on Edstrom? Bystedt clone?

I gotta say, if nothing else, Grier has some huge balls.

Yes, we should over pay other, worse players for insulation and leadership

Those other, worse players having never been top line centers in the league at any point

And no, I dont think you hand the keys to a 20 year old with zero pro experience, that's how you make a team into the Taylor Hall era Oilers, you bring those kids into an environment where they aren't relied upon to do absolutely everything for their team and have veterans who can pick up after their shortcomings

Nevermind, I take it all back, this trade is good, actually
