Hall doesn't make any sense. He's another one dimensional mid line winger and we have plenty of those. Even at 50% he's got a 3M cap hit, which is more than half of the cap space we have to spend on. Murphy would obviously be a good upgrade.
The same could have been said last year when Florida added Tarasenko on the cheap.

I think Tre really dropped the ball not going all in on Matt Roy (instead of OEL) just to keep Liljegren only to trade him a month into the season. He is exactly what we needed, young, signed to a great deal now in Washington.

McCabe - Tanev
Reilly - Roy

Could’ve been one of the better top 4s in the league.

I think both Tavares bounce back and Reillys tough year are related to Berubes system. Tavares thriving with the slower pace while Reillys main strength generating off the rush is a complete non-factor now.

Yes most posters on here all wanted us to sign Roy.

Who knows what amount it would have taken to get Roy and if he ever really was willing to sign?

We now need to find some decent RHD because I aint sold the likes of Myers/Timmins/Hakanpaa will hold up and if you put Benoit in your lineup, all the sudden you're having to play one defencemen on his offside and that's not optimal.

I dont know maybe Myers can stick. I have thought he's looked alright but haven't really looked into any advanced stats or anything.

Mirtle has mentioned it a few times that the belief is he would’ve signed if Toronto matched Washington’s offer

Finding someone like Kovacevic to play with Rielly would be excellent.

They have Hamilton, Kovacevic and Pesce at RD.

Hamilton and Pesce are big money guys, Pesce they just signed. They also have Nemec in the minors. They have to extend Luke Hughes and a lot of their bottom 6.

There is an above average chance for the Leafs to sign Kovacevic this off-season, could be a similar case to Roy where the money just isn't there.

How good is Connor Murphy?
His name has bring brought up for awhile now and the profile sounds intriguing.
I think the eye test crew likes the player, what do the advanced stats people think?

Leafs are in a worse position than NJ capwise. You have to find $5m for Woll and McCabe before having to resign Knies, Marner and Tavares. Good luck trying to outbid somebody for Kovacevic.

Friedman also said that Roy may have been one of the guys scared off of Toronto because of the media/pressure etc...

Anyway, ballsy post from Mirtle; no chance he does that with the last GM.

McCabe was already extended for 4.513M and Woll was already extended for 3.66M

Knies is probably going to come in around 5.5M for 5-6 years

Marner and Tavares is up in there air.

Kovacevic likely fetches 4-5M for 4-6 years.

Yes, Woll and McCabe got $5+m total in raises starting next year. Marner probably gets $2m raise and $4+m raise for Knies makes it $11+m. Tavares won't be taking a huge haircut and you need to find another C. Hard to then find $3+m for a dman to replace Timmins. The way I see it, you have to start by moving Kampf, Jarnkrok and maybe Domi unless you can move Rielly.

Cap will likely be 92.5M

I fully expect other bodies like Kampf, Jarnkrok, Benoit, Holmberg, Timmins and Reaves to all/mostly be pushed out. You don't let inconsequential depth get in the way of a guy like Kovacevic to solidify the right side, that is the least of my worries.

You settled your own argument
Get rid of those three and you save close to 8 million.
All three bring absolutely nothing to the team

A $4m cap increase does not even cover the Woll and McCabe raises. Gotta move significant money of you want to sign Kovacevic. Sorry, I do not see the Leafs making the bold move(s) needed to get that done.

Don't forget Jarnkrok's money is going to LTIR this year. Not the case if he is healthy next year.

They can/will bury most of Reaves' money in the minors next year. No way should he be on the team a 3rd year and one year older.

If Rielly cant hack it with Tanev then no one can.
Right! Numerous players have complimented Tanev on how easy of a partner he is.. if Morgan can’t play with him than it’s a Morgan problem not a partner problem. Honestly getting tired of the year in year out talk about finding this guy a partner. He’s been in the league for 12 years already. Enough of this garbage

Maybe you see something I do not. Do the math assuming a $92.5m and then tell me you do not agree. ;)

Pretty decent start, Nashville's age etc of the guys they signed means they will be trying to be competitive. Trotz is familiar with both players, Leafs will likely just need to pay the signing bonus on July 1st so Jarnkrok will be dirt cheap for real $.

In a perfect world they would move on from Rielly and/or Benoit too but no guarantee there.

Reaves would also free up like another 100-150k for them too.

As for JT/Marner, I think the idea is going to be to work deferrals into the next deals ex, JT can have 6M for 2 years but artificially lower it to 4.5M - team is competitive, he gets his money still.

That gets into speculation territory though, the template for the above is something I would feel very comfortable in working with.

I am not too worried about Mo. He will rebound I have zero doubt. He has been THE BEST D-Man in playoffs for every series we've played.

it kinda sucks that every season Rielly has to play with a "new" partner, there hasn't been any stability for Mo since he has been drafted with a same partner for at least two years in a row.

Now that McCabe and Tanev are taking tough match ups it will free up Rielly to get going. I think he is still figuring it out with Myers (assuming he sticks with Mo).

I have zero concerns with Rielly as soon as playoffs roll in. My concerns when it comes to playoffs is Marner, Matthews and Tavares going absolutely quiet in games that matter!!!
Fair I'd agree with you a bit more but last year mo was horrid in the playoffs

Rielly can 'hack' it with Tanev.

Tanev and McCabe have just been really good together. Some of you need to dial it down a couple notches.
He's being paid 7.5m per and shouldn't escape the same criticism the other core four get on a regular basis. Even if he becomes a stud in the playoffs, it doesn't excuse yet another horrible season.

He's had a bad season but people pretending that he hasn't looked good beside Tanev are ignoring the fact that he hasn't really played much with Tanev.

McCabe and Tanev have been excellent together. This is the reason Rielly has not played with Tanev. Not because Rielly can't 'hack' it.
