Couture will not go on LTIR unless they need the cap space. They have to use up the 38 mil they currently have available to them before they would have to use LTIR as an option there. Given the team's needs going into next season, I can't foresee them needing LTIR cap space.
I can see them not LTIRing Couture just so they can reach the floor.

Nope. Just a fan who's suffered through some pretty brutal lows yet finally finds himself questioning how much time he wants to invest in the team. Call me out on my fandom, I don't care, but I don't ever truly remember being this close to just not caring until they're good again.
You're not any less of a fan if you want to check out for a few years but I guarantee you'll be happier coming back to an actual contender than a mediocre team that still has Hertl on it. Moves like this are necessary to help bring that to fruition.

If he asked out that creates its own problems. He would've been miserable if he was told the team would do right by him and then turned around to go "nah, we like ticket money more."
If he did then that's different, but he doesn't strike me as that kind of a person. He knew where the team was headed when he re-signed, but now all of a sudden a year and a half in he hates it?

You clearly care about the team man, and I love that. We really have to pick a direction and ride with it, we are going to be getting some fun ass prospects in the next 2 drafts forsure.

I'd rather not check out, but it's increasingly difficult to try and connect with a team and players who are just some random passerbys. It's like the difference between going to your local bar with regulars and just showing up at some random dive you've never been.

"Trading top 3 picks and giving out 3 of the 5 worst contracts in hockey is completely fine, but trading an overpaid and passed his prime player on a rebuilding team with a -112 goal differential is where I draw the line"

The Athletic gave us rave reviews (two writers graded it an A, one A-) for this trade and wrote this:

So I'm not the only one saying these things.
How many years are the Sharks going to rebuild? What is the end goal? When they say a few years, are we talking about 2030? Will the fanbase still be here by then?

Honestly, if Vegas wins the cup, that may just kill my love of hockey. Being here and having to deal with the combination of the sharks incompetency over the years and the Vegas success constantly in my face... it's just too much. I know it's just sports and whatever, but f*** man.

Will the organization still be in SJ is a better question.

Our CapFriendly page is so beautiful...only three players on the active roster signed past 2025 and those all expire 2026 (doesn't include Couture on IR who expires 2027)

Neither keeping Hertl nor the mediocre return is going to make or break the team's future.

It aint just sports, life is hard enough as it is. I f***ing hate losing, believe me. This 100% beats being some middling team like the flames. Sports give us a common goal and something to look forward too man, almost like an escape of some sorts. This really is going to be the darkest year for our franchise, we are going to have some serious talent coming in a year or two, and atleast give us some players to cheer for on the team, even if we are losing.

It does especially hurt too when it is Vegas, and we watched them be given a competitor right out of the gate. If we had won a single cup with Jumbo and the boys, this would obviously hurt less, so I do know where you are coming from.

It doesn't have to be that he hates it. It could be that he told management to let him know if there are any trade offers that come along that he might be interested in. Or that management went to him and said "we have this Vegas offer. It's your all whether we take it or not" or who knows what else. It doesn't have to be a spiteful breakup when it could just as easily be the cold realization that this might be the best opportunity he has to leave and go somewhere of his choice that has intentions of competing for a cup.

I hear you on the in your face thing. I was in DFW when the Stars were in the Cup final in the Covid bubble, and that sucked. Glad to not be there when they have a chance to win this year.

For me, I love the Sharks through and through, but don't love hockey or the NHL. I'm more invested in my teams, and not the sports themselves. That said, it's easier to "deal with" by not having my life revolve around the Sharks during these times.

How do you not understand that keeping Hertl hurts the team's future by making it harder to finish last?

Imagine where we would be in the standings right now if we didn't have Hertl or Couture for the entire season? At least 5 points clear of Chicago, I'd guess.

Everyone wants the top prospects but can't accept what it takes to secure them.

okay, had time to think about this trade.

First of all, for the folks who say Grier doesn’t have a plan — I think it’s pretty clear that he’s had one since the beginning and that he’s relentlessly pursued it. Like it or not, he was going to ship out every big contract he could so he could start rebuilding this team in his image.

Secondly, I wish we could’ve gotten a better prospect than Endstrom, and the 2 3rd rounders feel dumb, but on the other hand, it sounds like he’s got the potential to be a Couture-like player for us, which is a great add to our pool.

Thirdly, from Grier’s quote, I think he has big plans this summer on what to do with his newfound cap space. I imagine it’ll be weaponize for more picks but I can also see him throwing some significant money at top pairing D/top 6 forwards to help the new guys come in.

Ultimately I think this is good for the franchise, despite hurting a lot. And I’d wait til the end of summer before you quit your fandom, I think now that he’s torn down most of it, he’s going to start building it up asap.

There was a better option - Keep him and find solace in enjoying watching one of the last true good talents the team has. Allow him to provide occasional reminders of what its like to enjoy hockey like he did when we went on that random win streak earlier.
Except for the facts that Hertl wanted to go to Vegas. And Grier has stated multiple times in the past 2 years that anyone with a clause would not be asked to waive it unless they came to him and said they wanted out.

Only thing I wonder is that if NY Rangers were anywhere close to call for Hertl? I just imagined it would have been the perfect place for him to land taking back Schneider and 1st at least.
Well, it's too late for that.
