Nothing exciting will happen with the cap space. We'll pick up a late 1st and maybe a couple of 3rds in exchange for other team's garbage and continue our run as the worst team in the league for the foreseeable future.

Probably still on target for a winning season no earlier than 2028 no matter what we do. No, we will not be competitive next season with Celebrini - we would need him and Smith to instantly turn into Gretzky and Lemieux to be able to drag the rotted fetid corpse of the rest of the roster to a wildcard spot.

Dumping Hertl is quite literally to make the future better. What happens with cap space is the big what if.
Hertl's cap space isn't what's going to prevent the Sharks from whatever success they find. It's all contingent on Grier hitting on the picks he's getting in return from the trades as well as his own. By the time Hertl's contract is nearing it's end, the cap will be close to 100 million anyways.

You can't prove this one way or the other.
You can't prove any trade will have any given outcome but teams still keep making them.

And again unless you want to argue Hertl actually has a negative impact on the ice, subtracting him from the roster objectively makes the Sharks worse which objectively makes them more likely to finish last which objectively increases their odds of drafting a franchise player. So that part is provable.

I can see them not LTIRing Couture just so they can reach the floor.
I can too since they don't have LTIR as an option until and unless they will be going over the cap. It's hard for me to envision them spending the 38 mil in cap space they have set up for themselves this offseason. Potentially more cap space could be had with possible buyouts in Vlasic and Kostin. To go along with a lot of young players probably getting NHL action between Smith, Musty, Mukhamadullin, Bystedt, and now Edstrom, and potentially Celebrini if they get lucky enough. There won't be THAT many holes to fill and there won't be THAT many options available to them as they're not going to be going after marquee names anytime soon.

Sports give us a common goal and something to look forward too man, almost like an escape of some sorts
The commonality during this time is like hanging out with other addicts in a crack house. Sure we have something in common, but perhaps it's best to just sever ties.

Yeah there are a lot of ifs and buts and I am not thrilled with the trade, mostly because it is Vegas. But I like to be hopeful about short term pain and long term success.

Cap space is so tight for contending teams in the NHL, saving 6.75 million a year could absolutely be the difference between a cup or not in the future.

How do you not understand that keeping Hertl hurts the team's future by making it harder to finish last?

Imagine where we would be in the standings right now if we didn't have Hertl or Couture for the entire season? At least 5 points clear of Chicago, I'd guess.

Everyone wants the top prospects but can't accept what it takes to secure them.
It’s like a 5% difference in lottery odds. Nothing about this trade secures anything. The team was bad enough with Hertl. I think people wanted a better return which is fair.

I hear you on the in your face thing. I was in DFW when the Stars were in the Cup final in the Covid bubble, and that sucked. Glad to not be there when they have a chance to win this year.

For me, I love the Sharks through and through, but don't love hockey or the NHL. I'm more invested in my teams, and not the sports themselves. That said, it's easier to "deal with" by not having my life revolve around the Sharks during these times.
My life definitely doesn't revolve around the sharks, but I love the sport, or at least I used to when teams would come up, develop and earn their place at the top of the mountain. But here in Vegas, the town of immediate gratification and the allure of false hope, there is only one ticket in town for sports (Raiders are still a Cali team), and the arrogance the comes along with the success just ruins the sheer enjoyment of what I grew up with.

Last place has a 55% chance. To pick 3rd lol. Now, I’d rather finish last than 2nd to last, but this team will be unrivaled in the tank next year.

Tell that to Vegas. Apparently if you have a savvy enough front office it's easy to find ways around it and I'm not talking about the LTIR thing.

The myth of cap space being a premium has been clearly debunked.

It's the difference between a guaranteed top 3 pick and drafting 4th or later which is hugely significant.

No we clearly weren't "bad enough" with Hertl because we're not currently 32nd in the league.

Of course it's fair to want a better return but it's clear there wasn't one on the table. So the real question is do you take this return or do you keep Hertl, who probably asked for a trade, and gamble that he won't fall off at all next season despite playing on what could be an even worse team?

Terrible dumb trade- make vegas a ruthless cup contender while the sharks will be Buffalo of the west. Picking every year between picks 2 and 7 in the first round and giving fans crappy teams year in year out. If by any chance they have good drafts ( big if ) they are not going to be ready to compete until 2029. They tore enough down and trying to tank for Celebrini is beyond stupid since the NHL only gives that a 25% chance of succeeding. what the eff is the plan? Does Dallas or Vegas or Vancouver ( teams on top ) trade for other team's draft busts? ( C Addison ). MG and Sharks brass are NOT smarter than everyone else, its a dumb way to rebuild and its got very little chance of success.

San Jose has 2 1st this year, 2 1st next year,

Musty, Will Smith, Edstrom, Haultttunen, Cagnoni, Bystadt, and Eklund. San Jose has some nice assets.
This guy from the main board thread gets it.

Speaking of, where do we think Edstrom ranks on our prospect rankings? I would have Smith, Musty and Mukhamadullin ahead of him but I could see an argument for 3rd or 4th.

Except for the facts that Hertl wanted to go to Vegas. And Grier has stated multiple times in the past 2 years that anyone with a clause would not be asked to waive it unless they came to him and said they wanted out.
Is this fact?
