#1 is the epitome of all rock singers...If you were to create a sim character of the most perfect rock front man....the voice, the look, the style, the sex appeal...

You would create Robert Plante hands down.

I do like Robert Plant, but his voice is polarizing. I would put Bowie or Freddy Mercury above him.

I think with Plante is more than just the voice....the voice is spectacular but it the entire package and stage presence is what makes it for me. I don't think Bowie in his prime could stand on stage with Plante in his prime... Mercury great voice...weird though. Kind strange 70's Studio 54 kink that I wouldn't want to be in the crowd with

I never had the opportunity to see any of them on stage, so I can only go by how their voices sound on their recordings. Freddy's vocal range was incredible, and I have always been impressed with how Bowie could constantly reinvent himself into a new persona and change his voice to match. I personally like Plant's singing, but I can see why his critics describe him as nasal or whiny on some tracks.

All that said, I can easily see how a Led Zeppelin show would be more electric than Bowie or Queen.

I saw both of Plant and Page's solo tours back in 88. They were pretty good but it was clear that Plant couldn't get to where he used to be with his voice. The best thing was Stevie Ray Vaughn opened up for Plant, I wasn't too familiar with him at the time but holy shit I'm glad we went in for the opening act, blew everyone away.

Best singer for me is Freddy Mercury, hands down. There's a lot of good ones but no one comes remotely close, his range, control and pitch was out of this world, he was auto tune before auto tune existed. A lot of those dudes mentioned earlier are just screamers. Axl Rose was a complete doosh prima donna when I saw him, whining and walking off stage. Vetter was good when I saw him, kind of a mumbler though.

Definitely think Freddy Mercury has a good case of being the greatest singer. I’ve never really thought about it and I’ve never really had an opinion on who the greatest singer was, but I definitely can get behind that. The way he described him was perfect. Even though Queen had a few songs that get on my nerves, I totally agree.
I've always been a huge Van Halen fan and I just love Sammy Hagar's voice.

That is all.
I like Sammy Hagar’s voice too. Van Halen definitely had some duds with him, but I can’t deny his voice.

No Yorke, Bowie, Mercury, or Prince?

Woof.

I can think of a fair amount of modern indie rock singers that are better than half the guys you listed, but I'm guessing they'd seem pretty obscure to you.

That and I'm assuming you're sticking with dudes. Why, I'm not quite sure. But that's what it looks like.

Edit: just saw Janis and she certainly does not belong in this conversation. Because if she's in Kurt certainly is and that I cannot abide.

It’s just one person’s personal preference. To each their own.

Yeah, it depends how you are rating. If you are looking at pure vocal technique, I don't know if any of these singers should even make the list. There are probably high school choir singers more technically sound than a lot of these singers.

But music is art and art is subjective. Singing can be objectively measured and graded. Are you on pitch? How many octaves does your range span? Tongue position, jaw tension, mouth shapes, laryngeal position, etc. But even the most technically proficient singer isn't automatically an artist.

Personally, right now, I don't think there is a person who combines vocal technique and musical artistry as well So Hyang. Oddly she specializes in both techniques and musical styles that are generally not my cup of tea. They are just at an insanely amazing level and you can't help but be in awe.

Best rock vocalists

Neil Young

Roger Waters

Bruce Springsteen

I’ve never thought Bruce had a great voice even if it can be powerful and evocative. Same with Waters. Young is ok but nothing special to my ears. Just my opinion. Others will hear it differently and they aren’t wrong.

I'm tone deaf. I recorded myself trying to sing the Eagles Take It Easy in ninth grade. I played it for a friend and he said I sounded like Young, Waters, and Springsteen had a lovechild. I erased the cassette.
