Yeah but you're pushing your luck! I mean, both Bennett and Ehlers would be incredible but double unlikely. If you can sign Bennett, you play him Center 100%. There's actually many people in the NHL circle who think Cozens is better suited at Wing, which would allow him to express his offense with less defensive responsibilities. Maybe he can move back to Center later in his career as his defensive game evolves.

Bennett is actually a good career comparable for Greig, as long as he continues to develop his game, he can become as effective. Maybe he won't be as good offensively but could be better defensively.

I would not look at moving Greig, homegrown talent, plays a complete game. If he doesn't develop into a guy that can compliment a Top-6 line, no worries, you staple him on your 3rd line and pay him accordingly.

He has been turning his career around in Colorado, I think he will want to stay with MacKinnon and even take discounts to do so. He is actually becoming a quality player, finally.

lol nice trolling

No one said "Joseph was so frickin great" (or if they did, I missed it)

Joseph is a 3rd line forward, he is good defensively and on the PK, can chip in offensively too. He had some very good seasons and some so-so seasons as he is inconsistent and a bit injury-prone.

Some are/were not happy to give up a 3rd round pick to move him considering Dorion's inexistent asset management over the years, some would have preferred to keep him rather than sign Amadio or Perron or for both reasons. This is as simple as that.

Now the speculation is that there was stuff going on off the ice that makes him less valuable than he normally would around the league. Some other teams, like the Habs, would have maybe taken him but for maybe a 2nd instead of a 3rd so Staios most likely moved him to the team that would cost him the less to do it.
You're so predictable.

Haven't watched him in a while, but he usually left me underwhelmed. Don't think he fits the type of team Staios wants to build.

I think in free agency as usual we'll end up finding some unsexy name nobody thought of.

Looking at the UFAs here (<- there's a link here; it's not highlighting it for some reason) two names that might fit Staios' philosophy and that we could fit under our cap: Donato and Bennett. Both 28yrs old, seem intense on the ice. Bennett has some Cup pedigree now.
Bennett plays big, tough and mean. Sign me up for him. Hope we have the cap dollars.

You're the one who understood "If Joseph was so frickin great" when reading the last few pages. No one came even close to say that

I would like you to continue, instead of hiding until your next stupid little trolling comment lol

Can we try to sign Marner ? just somehow :D.. trade Perron and Cozens or other things
Marner wants $13 million aav over 8 years. I don't think Ottawa will be in a position to sign him without getting rid of Perron, Cozens, and Amadio. We'd be relying on bargain bin deals to fill out the bottom 6.

I'd love Marner on the team over Perron and Cozens though. Our top 6 would be insane

A $13M AAV is not something I think Andlauer nor Staios would be willing to pay.

Looking at the commitments now, I think Zetterlund was essentially Staios' summer addition, so I wouldn't expect much... if the team makes the playoffs. If they choke their spot away, there's probably another change to the core, or two, coming.

Tkachuk ($8,205,714) - Stützle ($8,350,000) - Giroux ($4,500,000*)
Zetterlund ($4,750,000*) - Cozens ($7,100,000) - Batherson ($4,950,000)
Greig ($3,250,000) - Pinto ($3,750,000) - Perron ($4,000,000)
XXX - XXX - Amadio ($2,600,000)

Sanderson ($8,050,000) - Zub ($4,600,000)
Chabot ($8,000,000) - Jensen ($4,050,000)
Kleven ($1,500,000*) - XXX
Matinpalo
($1,000,000*)

Ullmark ($8,250,000)
Merilainen ($1,250,000)

*Estimate

Dead cap - $1,875,000

That's $90M, leaving $5.5M for two 4th liners and a #6D (maybe they give Yakemchuk a shot at that spot in camp).

And I'd assume that Staios will want to leave $2M in cap space, at least, of breathing room, so you're likely looking at guys making $1M or less for those roles (a new version of Cousins, Gregor, etc).

Yeah, it’s gonna be a real boring summer I think, especially if we also forfeit our 1st this year.

If we're looking at the Tkachuk timeline, Staios is probably looking for this progression:

This year: make the playoffs, get experience
Next year: make the playoffs comfortably, win a round
2026/27: contend for the cup
2027/28: contend for the cup

Going into those last 2 years, we'll likely have ~20-25M in cap with most roster spots filled, and hopefully, Yakemchuk playing as a top 4 on an ELC.

That's when you can take some home run swings to get it over the top.

We'll see how it works out. These 20 games now are the first step...

It's possible that both Cousins LW & Gilbert LD could be re-signed, not sure why they would trade for Gilbert & not re-sign him. And if Halliday C is promoted that pretty much fills out your roster.

I think the NHL reinstates the 1st round pick, or a compromise comes into effect where the Sens have to trade it.

My hope is that the Spartacat thing was some sort of humiliating ritual that we agreed to in order to get back the pick.

It is right out of the Bettman playback to tease relocation when arena talks are stalling. I could see him saying I know this won't go over well but if you play ball and make that lion wear the damn jersey maybe we can do something about the pick.

Not getting my hopes up, and if it's true that the second half of the first round this year is basically a second round pick most other years, we are getting off easy by giving it up now.

Of course it's very unlikely but if we could ever sign Nikolaj Ehlers as a UFA, this team could be really set. I think that'd require to move both Perron and Amadio but :

Zetterlund - Stutzle - Ehlers
Tkachuk - Pinto - Cozens
Giroux - Greig - Batherson
Reinhardt - Gaudette - Cousins
MacEwen

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - Jensen
Kleven - Matinpalo
Guenette

Ullmark
Merilainen

Contender? Ehlers just turned 29 so 8 years would bring him to 37 years old, which is risky, particularly with him having been injury prone in the past. But if we want to attract a player of that caliber, we'd have to take a huge risk and pay him something like 8 x 8. I just did this on puckpedia and it would fit (Giroux at 3.5 though and Kleven at 2.2, Matinpalo at 1.1). Not sure if possible or how much it would cost to move Perron and Amadio but this Top-9 is absolute FIRE

Sorry for bringing it back but there's still the 1st round pick to forfeit and an absolutely dreadful prospect pool that should take years to rebuild. But I get what you're saying, Staios is progressively removing the Dorion's stink. It was always going to be an extremely hard job, which is incredible when you're in the middle of a rebuild, Dorion had the easy parts and still messed up.

I'm in the camp that doesn't see it with Ostapchuk. I think he won't pace for more than 20 pts in many seasons, maybe a few times like Curtis Lazar for example. A guy like Nick Paul was a late bloomer and is completely in another tier that I can't see Ostapchuk reaching at the NHL level.

I think we killed it with this trade because Zetterlund is RFA and unless his asks are unreasonable, we could hold unto that player for years. We only gave up a mid 2nd round pick and a young 4th line Center to get him.

I can't crunch the numbers right now but I don't think Ehlers fits. Zetterlund is getting 5M+. Maybe a bit less if we just buy up the arb-RFA years.

5+ mil seems a bit high for an RFA 45 pts winger, maybe that's just me not yet adjusting to the cap climbing. I mean, his leverage is an offer sheet, 5 mil is a 1st and a 3rd I think, which is probably more than SJ got for him, no?

With the Jets trading for Schenn, maybe we can swing them a pick for Colin Miller? That gives every D pairing a defensive dman and a puck mover.

I'm thinking 5 to 6 mill over 4-6 years.

Assuming his pace stays the same, he is a physically right hand forward with two straight 25 goal seasons who is also arb eligible.

I could see a bit less if it's just a deal to buy up arb years.

Basically the Batherson contract with cap inflation.

Macewen($775), Halliday($950) two internal options.
Might want a more veteran player over Halliday though(?)

Depending on the team getting him, anything 20+ is probably simialr value, if not less

I'd imagine 5+ is what Lemieux, Grier didn't seem to be willing to pay Zetterlund's ask, which I'm sure played a part in the parting of ways.

If he went to arbitration, I'd be surprised if he never got ~5 million. Two 20 goal seasons in a row, hits, ~50 points.

I'd imagine Marchenko, who signed for 3.85 x 3, would be a low comp for him. Signed without the new cap parameters. I'd think Zetterlund gets somewhere between 4.5-5.5 mid/long term

Marchenko. Signed at 24 years old
