was it you that made pea crabs awhile back?
Yeah...but it was a small olive crab. I make a lot of crab and shrimp patterns.

Edit:. This is my favorite crab pattern because it was totally on a whim...ever buy asparagus from the super market and they were held together with a rubber band...well these crab claws are a rubber band from the asparagus bundle.

One more small fly...same size as the other small one. This is made out a single moose hair that my Dad harvested a few years ago in Idaho.

I tied this specifically for the Little Lehigh where if there is a slightly warm day in the winter they have prolific midge(Diptera) hatches. midge | insect

I can't tell you how much that one little gap in the moose hair body bothers me.

Been a little while since I fished Little Lehigh. It was the first creek I ever flyfished on. The stretch by the hatchery was absolutely loaded and it was a good spot to learn while still having an opportunity to catch fish.

Still waiting for the wrapping jig, but I did get the ice rod blank I decided to order for my first rod building attempt. I was able to assemble the handle:

It was too cold for the epoxy in the garage, so I had to work in my bedroom

I also practiced wrapping a guide on a fiberglass rod using a bobbin and the rod dryer. I think it looks decent for a first attempt:

That's awesome, glad you decided to give it a shot, it's a pretty cool hobby. It's great choosing your own blanks and flex patterns, guides, thread colors, handles etc. My brothers' friend used to make rods a long time ago, he made them a ton of trolling rods over the years. I still have the one that he made me over twenty years ago and use it all the time (saltwater striper boat rod, it's white with black guides and red thread, handle is black and red, Devils colors of course).

Very nice. Can't wait to see the finished product.

I only fish the little Lehigh in the dead of the winter. It's one of the only places I know of that you can find reliably rising trout in January and February...

Ironically it was dead yesterday. I couldn't find a fish...well not a trout, there were suckers everywhere.

So most fans of the genre will consider this a landmark work in Zeppelin format.

of course, what's interesting is it was written and performed by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929.

Obviously the style varies but you can hear the thread of what became rock and roll. Really amazing to go down that rabbit hole and learn that much of what we recognized as later rock and roll was just a change to electric guitars from acoustic and how it was recorded and mixed. Go listen to the original Crossroad Blues by Robert Johnson for another good example.

I am a huge fan of the "begots" as I call them. In all things...I love seeing fly patterns from 100+ years ago that we've incorporated into modern patterns and have become something completely different from a few improvements and iterations.

I love reading and learning about archery history shooting techniques that are hundreds of years old that still hold true today. We've added more science and technology but someone figured these basic form elements and human movements to maximize accuracy probably at the dawn of time.

And I really enjoy hearing the old Delta blues that obviously influenced everything.

Nothing is new :)

Yesterday was February 22nd, ie 2/22/22.

I work retail, so me and the lady who works the register were talking and she says wouldn't it be cool if we got a $2.22 sale today, and I said, at 2:22 PM.

Well freaking sure enough we got a $2.22 sale at 2:22. I thought that was pretty crazy.

I don't think it's quite accurate to say Rock and Roll was "just a change to electric guitar". There is a lot of other stuff getting thrown into the mix as well.

But as someone who dabbles a bit playing guitar, I know the sound of the electric provides a different inspiration. I want to play it louder and more aggressive than I would an acoustic, especially if I turn the distortion up a bit. My playing follows the sound as much as it leads it.

I agree it was more than just the change from acoustic to electric (even if to me that was the biggest factor because as you've noted that spurred other developments), but I didn't want to write a long rambling post about it so much as just show what jumped out at me when I saw that Levee Breaks video. It's just fascinating to me how deep the roots of modern classic rock go back once you start looking for them.

Here's another one. I can hear the modern version lurking in the original from 1931. Just amazing.

My heart goes out to all Ukrainians during this disgusting war mongering by Russia. Just insane and sad.

Until human beings can get beyond violence as a way to settle disputes, we will remain at risk for mutual assured destruction. Given the nature of the Russian economy, they likely will not want to sustain a long military operation. Hopefully whatever is really driving the bus can be resolved quickly and without further destruction or bloodshed. Something tells me whatever the public statement is about the need for military intervention the reality is different.

Dang, i missed out on the rock n roll/guitar conversation, the only subject i know a lick of anything about, just in time for it to be sidetracked by world war 3.

With the state of the US right now, it’s harder than usual to muster outward compassion for things thousands of miles away. But it really can’t be overstated how unnecessary these (seemingly?) petty territorial disputes feel in the wake of a global health catastrophe when the world should be coming together.

Nah we are not.
I sincerely hope not, but what the hell do you do here? Sit around and do nothing while the Russian military pummels Ukraine and engages in "de-Nazifying" it (their president is Jewish and descended from Holocaust survivors so that's a bald faced lie on the surface), or fight back and risk places getting hit by the world's largest nuclear arsenal? There are no good options.

Sanctions are not nothing. The US and its allies will not risk nuclear war by engaging directly with invading Russian forces in Ukraine. We can instead increase the costs to Russia for engaging in this unprovoked aggressive war of choice.

However, Putin and his oligarchs don't really care about Russia's economy or its people's well-being. They care about staying rich and staying in power. Targeted sanctions are the way to punish them. There's a reason why Russians with shady wealth invest in real estate and assets in Western countries, and don't keep it in Russia. They rely on the rule of law here to protect their ill-gotten property and laundered money. But now that could be their weakness.

Cancel their visas, impound their yachts, seize their mansions in Miami and London, freeze their accounts in Western banks, boot their kids out of our universities. Putin will have some very unhappy siloviki within a week.

Where I am worried about escalation though, is cyberattacks. That could get ugly.

Putin only cares about his place in the history books. He’s an OG Soviet to his core. It will only get worse and worse as he gets older and approaches death over the next decade or two. It’s up to the Russian people to stand up in large masses.

He only glorifies the Soviet Union because it was the greatest glory Russia ever had. It’s no coincidence he used a speak to trash Lenin for “inventing” Ukraine. He doesn’t like the old political system, he likes the idea of Great Russia going back to the czars.

Already there are protests in over 40 cities across Russia, but I don’t see them going anywhere. And sanctions probably won’t work- I’m convinced those large glass buildings in Sheepshead Bay are sanction skirters for oligarchs, while the rest of them suffer.
