Why you can expect some surprising names to pop up for coveted Toronto Maple Leafs’ GM role

1:41 | May 22, 2023

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman joins the Jeff Marek Show to discuss why Brad Treliving makes a ton of sense for the vacant Toronto Maple Leafs GM gig, and why he expects many names to come out of the woodwork for this much coveted role.

Hire the following for the ultimate Habs troll job

GM - Bergevin
Head Coach - Roy

I thought Patrick Roy was going to turn out to be a fantastic NHL coach. Maybe he might have 30 years ago. He's got too much personal baggage and he's probably too bombastic. But man alive, he would be the most entertaining coach in recent Leafs' history. He's so competitive, so confrontational, so emotional. Imagine what his press conferences would be like with the local hockey media.

I think it really comes down to their confidence in resigning AM and WN. If Pridham has established his own relationship with these guys and their agents and if he has been heavily involved in signings then they should have a lot of faith in him versus an outsider. If not, thats kind of a big risk, and if he gets involved early by himself and it doesn't go well it might not be something they can undo.

I would trust that their desire to put a new person in by x date is determined by successfully dealing with the NTs and that they won't take a subpar candidate for expediency. There aren't a bunch of guys who aren't available now but would suddenly pop up in a month or two. and for all we know they are doing it right away to see if there is anyone they like more than Pridham.
Again.. agree

And it also should be noted that as president shanahan can outline the vision to AM and WN just as sharply and that the new gm will mirror these plans

Is anything more recent? Would be nice to have something in the last decade.

Looking at San Jose recently, he's done a lot of bad.
They were in the finals in 15-16 and three rounds deep in 18-19 before the team got old and fell off a cliff the next year. I think the worst thing he had done recently is add Karlsson who only earned his deal this year when they really needed a #1c to replace Joe, hence the Tavares pursuit. Jumbo was already 39 by the time of the EK add. It was getting to the very end of the Sharks window and actually moving Thornton might not have been an option.

He also got Thornton from Bruins for some pucks and tape and Brent Burns for mostly Devin Setoguchi. Rumor has it he may be in the market for NHL employment again but he may not be interested in taking on something this big. Hope he gets a look for sure.
He also acquired Dan Boyle for a back of pucks

Doug Wilson would be a great get.
I thought he was ill? Isn't that the reason he left the Sharks?
I think he's been better. Not sure if he's well enough to run all hockey operations though.

Former San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson’s health has improved to the point where he might return to the NHL in some capacity, this news organization has confirmed.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman first mentioned the possibility Tuesday on the “The Jeff Marek Show” in Canada.

Wilson, 65, stepped down as the Sharks’ GM last April to focus on his recovery from an undisclosed health issue, but also noted at the time that he wanted to continue his career in the NHL in the future.

Wilson’s health has improved in recent months and he was seen with his oldest son, Doug Jr., talking to scouts and executives at last week’s regular season game between Arizona and Seattle at Mullett Arena in Tempe. Wilson has a home in the Phoenix area and Doug Jr. works as a scout for the Kraken.

What role Wilson would potentially have and what NHL team he might join is unclear, but Friedman said he is back on the radar for some franchises.

Two teams, the Calgary Flames and Pittsburgh Penguins, have GM openings, but Wilson might draw interest in other roles given the respect he earned as both a longtime executive and a Hockey Hall of Fame player.

Wilson has ties to the Chicago Blackhawks, having starred for the team for 14 seasons from 1977 to 1991, which included winning the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman in 1982.

Wilson was traded to the expansion Sharks in 1991 and served as San Jose’s captain for two years until his retirement in 1993. Wilson was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2020 and inducted in November 2021, shortly before he began what was originally intended to be a temporary medical leave of absence.

Wilson served as the Sharks’ general manager for 19 years from May 2003 to April 2022. In that time, the Sharks had the third-highest winning regular season winning percentage in the NHL and made the playoffs 14 times, reaching the Western Conference final five times and the Stanley Cup Final once in 2016.

So they offered Tavares 13 million apparently.

Were good but never the best.

And have some of the worst contracts in the league.

Not too interested.

If they do go with Pridham, hell even Treliving at this point, I'd love for Wilson to be brought in as an advisor of some kind. His body of work in San Jose was pretty damn good for the most part. He never won a cup but got really close.

Bergevin would actually be a really good as GM for the Leafs.

He deeply understands to win you need character, heart, size, etc, it cannot be done on skill alone. This is the one thing Dubas didn't seem to get or at least didn't do enough.

He's never really lost a trade except for Drouin-Sergachev.

He with the MLSE resources would be incredible too. He did amazing work for the sharks with what he had.

If the incoming GM cannot or will not trade at least Marner, count me out for next year. These guys tallking about how much they love to play together is embarrassing and following this team that can't win when it matters is an insult to my intelligence.

Wonder why so many arrive at the deadline and then exit asap? The Leafs are a.culture of entitled mediocrity and the owners love it as long as it is profitable.

The key for Bergevin is that he has a presence as a GM and will find character, intangible quality players. If MLSE gives him free reign he will bring in the 2-3 year contract players needed. No rentals per se.

He will trade the skill needed to a team that requires a boost in the regular season into the playoffs in exchange for hard nosed players who can thrive in the playoffs in T.O. Leafs can't keep importing in the DNA when the core is too unwlling to sacrifice.

He actually had the balls to trade Subban at the peak of his popularity, with a recent Norris for Weber and actually in hindsight looks like he made the correct move.

He failed to get a 1C and the Sergachev trade failed but overall, the entire exercise of reviewing his transactions was really eye opening.

Montreal's track record of drafting and developing was bad before he came anyway.

It boggles my mind that a week after he's been canned there are STILL people trying to defend Dubas.

Dubas is arrogant. With a "smartest guy in the room" attitude. He managed to rub fans the wrong way in the very short period of time he was here.

The whole "we can and we will" nonsense has proven to be nothing more than a bunch of hot air from a bullshit artist.

It doesn't matter who you replace Dubas with. You could replace him with a monkey and the results would still be the same. A potato could draft better.

At least the potato wouldn't keep drafting a whole bunch of little guys.
I was team Dunas tbh, but how he handled his own negotiations have me seeing the light..100% amateur hour. Good riddance.

So crickets with regards to signing a new GM.

Wonder if Lamoriello would take the GM/President role.

He can negotiate the next marner contract.

Quick napkin math, if he values 60 points with no defensive game at 8.5 mil that would give us something around 12+ for Marner. Maybe he tries the 20 year contract play again to get that number down to 11?

Montreal was grossly outskilled by the Leafs and still managed to beat them, all games in Toronto. Will always beats skill come playoffs.

Imagine running a business and keeping the employees that keep fa!ing? Only MLSEs monopoly wth big corporate sponsors allows the Leafs to continue to keep the same failing group together. Too often they hand the players the keys!
