Of course those guys want to stay. They like playing in Toronto, and were drafted here. The new GM assessing and moving forward after looking at the situation isn’t earth shattering news, either.

What’s offensive about any of that?

According to TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger:

- the Toronto Maple Leafs went pretty deep with Brad Treliving

- met with Brad Treliving early last week

- discussions with Marc Bergevin?

- Brendan Shanahan has talked to others

- could Peter Chiarelli actually be in the mix

- gets the feeling that Jason Botterill is not in the mix at all with Toronto

- is it a one-horse race?

- the longer this process drags out, the less likely Brad Treliving is hired as the Toronto Maple Leafs new GM

- Brendan Shanahan needs to hire an experienced GM for the Toronto Maple Leafs

- needle moves most likely maybe later this week

- 2 to 3 weeks at most to name a new General Manager for the Toronto Maple Leafs

Dreger on the latest around the Leafs' GM search, other potential candidates and more – TSN.ca

TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger joins us to chat about the latest on the Leafs' GM search, if candidates other than Brad Treliving have been interviewed, if a longer process makes it less likely Treliving is named GM, why he thinks the Pens job is Kyle Dubas' if he wants it and more.
Dreger is a worthless mouthpiece....

From the latest 32 Thoughts

-Getting mixed intel about another person interviewed last week that they are unable to confirm at this time that is high on their list who can be considered a favourite aside from Treliving. It wasn't Chiarelli, Armstrong, Botterill or Hunter. Bergevin is overseas but had a zoom call with the Leafs, not him. They also spoke to Doug Wilson as well but it's not the person either. (My take: Probably Brandon Pridham)

-They made a lot of calls to many different people. There might be others but the one name they spoke face to face for sure with was Treliving, he was in Toronto last week.

-Shanahan told Keefe that he wants to leave it up to the new GM if they are keeping him.

-The candidates are asking the Leafs about what the top players are saying they want to do. We know Tavares wants to stay, but what about Matthews and Marner? What about their contract demands, etc. Basically trying to assess what they are getting into. They believe players want to stay, but it also depends on the new GM and their vision.
Is it Doug Armstrong???

To make any move, or to make a "significant" move?

Most organizations have authorization levels, and I'm certain it is no different at MLSE.

Shanahan and the Board wouldn't get involved in a Marlie call up or a waiver wire move, and most insignificant trades.
Dubas would likely give Shanahan a heads up on a mid level trade that only involves a set $ amount
Dubas would need approval for things like firing the coach, or signing a contract over a certain threshold (which most GM would need)

The "spin" that seems to be starting since the firing is that Dubas needed Board approval for any moves which is pure BS in my opinion. Why hasn't this been a bigger story for the past 5 years if this is how the operation works?
Ive started to really pay attention to what guys like Friedman and CJ say and its soo political speak....Friedman..."some people I spoke to have said that they believe Shanny etc etc....some people? That could be his neighbor giving his opinion. ... he said that like 5 times in a 2 minute span. Cj...".its my belief" that Dubas blah blah and "Im hearing"......blah blah So basically they sound to me like they know about as much as the rest of us do and that is ZERO and yet some people take it as gospel and just run with it.

I dont mind Dangle but one of his latest podcasts him and his 2 sidekicks just went with the Shanny is a total control freak so it wont matter who the gm is view of things...and they were frothing at the mouth with anger about it.. Its been a real eye opener on how easy it is to sway people one way or the other without any significant proof.

“Told the core 4 he prefers them to stay but the GM will have a voice in everything.”

But.. he’s picking the GM himself. Is the question of the core 4 not going to come up in the interviews? If the candidate says he’s going to move multiple of the 4, he just doesn’t get the job.

Shanny picks a guy who agrees with Shanny’s position on the core, that GM “has his voice” in keeping them, and like magic it’s yet again 0% Shanny’s fault for any future failures because the GM was the one who re-commited to the core not Shanny.

I really wouldnt read into it too much. Why would he not tell the core (2 of which can sign a contract extension July 1st) that he sees them coming back. Allowing speculation to happen would do nothing good.

Yea, I generally don't mind their opinions on things, but those latest ones have been ridiculous. Adam Wylde sounds like a complete Dubas shill (not surprising since he parrots CJ and is a bit of an SJW), but even Dangle was getting in on the MLSE is Orwellian nonsense

Yeah its been tough to listen to. Everything is pro Dubas for them, none of them are trying to give the perspective from the side of Shanny (its like they cant even comprehend it). Like they dont even acknowledge the fact that Dubas basically requested to take Shanny's job. They just keep goin on about how could all this change over a press conference?!?!?!!?

Like theres way more to it than just the press conference but you're just ignoring all the context for some reason.

Shanny and Dubas mutually agree to bring him back. Dubas does a press conference that Shanny said not to do until things get ironed out. He blindsides Shanny and probably the entire Leafs org with a lot of the stuff he said in there (how can you tell Shanny you wanna come back and then publicly say youre not sure?). And based on Kyle's actions, Shanny saw what he needed to see to decide to can him.

That, plus several mistakes / omissions on the Shanahan press conference that they had just played on their pod.

Wylde and Dangle are some of the dumbest people in Toronto sports media. Which is quite an accomplishment considering how many morons are paid to write and talk about Toronto sports.

Dreger is a worthless mouthpiece....

Dreger: Big news out of Toronto that some or all of the core players may be traded. But a source tells me that it may not be the case

Hockey Fan: Ummm… so Dreger are they or are they not being traded?

Dreger: Both

Hockey fan: So you are basically saying both opposites are true; just to cover your own ass. And you call yourself an insider?

Dreger: Yes

Hockey Fan: Yes to what? covering your ass or insider?

Dreger: Yes

Hockey Fan:

Dreger: :)

Yes, that sums it up nicely. An ass kisser to the nth degree, master of double speak & I'm astounded he still has a job....

According to Elloitte Friedman:

- the Toronto Maple Leafs are holding draft meetings in Kamloops, BC. Brendan Shanahan was not there.

- Brad Treliving was in Toronto last week

- there was another person who came in, it was not Peter Chiarelli or Doug Armstrong

- not Doug Wilson, Mark Hunter, or Jason Botterill

- Marc Bergevin interviewed with the Toronto Maple Leafs via Zoom

- Brendan Shanahan reached out to a lot of people and made a lot of calls

- Brad Treliving had a face-to-face interview with the Toronto Maple Leafs

- the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brendan Shanahan want to do a thorough GM search, but don't think that they have a lot of time

- a lot of the questions they have been asking the Toronto Maple Leafs: what is in the heads of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and Mitch Marner?

- Brendan Shanahan told Sheldon Keefe that he likes him and his body of work

- Shanahan would like to keep the core 4 together

- the new Toronto Maple Leafs GM will have a voice in all of this

- John Tavares doesn't want to go anywhere, Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner all want to stay in Toronto

- Auston Matthews won't re-sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs by July 1, 2023

- Brad Treliving would be one of the best Toronto Maple Leafs GM candidates since he went through the same thing in Calgary

- GM candidates are asking the Toronto Maple Leafs: tell us honestly what we are getting into in here?
