Meltzer's take on Torts as of 11/20/2023

Has nothing to do with my "love" for any player. Has to do with what have been limitations he hasn't been able to overcome except for one magical season 19 years ago when Tampa was almost freakishly injury-free all season. When he's misjudged players, he's missed spectacularly (see Mats Zuccarello, who was about to go back to Europe before NY coaching changes to Vigneault turned his career, see William Karlsson, who was pegged as a 4th liner in Columbus and then scored 40 the next year in Vegas).

I never said he isn't a good coach. He is. But I wouldn't call him a great one or a HOF builder candidate. An innovator? No. A great teaching coach? Debatable. A great communicator?

The 2004 loss to Tampa gets worse as time goes on. All those injuries to the Flyers blue line gifted Torts a Cup.

And it's probably the only reason he is still getting coaching opportunities. It can't be for his track record of success since then. His teams have won a COMBINED 4 Playoff Rounds in the 16 seasons he has coached since. That will be 17 seasons after this one.

How quickly you dismiss the BJ's first-rounder ouster of the heavily favoured Lightning that Tortorella personally orchestrated, which showed Tampa Bay the error of trying to win the Cup with skill.

Literally. Dude even liked Scott Gordon.

So what you're telling me is that if we traveled back in time to 2021 and you had the opportunity to select any coach besides Claude Julien, Rod Brind'Amour, Jon Cooper, and Sam Hallam, you would not choose Alain Vigneault?

Oh and then follow that up by preferring Chuck Fletcher over everyone in the professional universe except Joe Sakic, Ron Hextall, Ron Francis, Daryl Morey, and Paul Holmgren to GM your team.

You're saying someone that does that probably doesn't have any interest whatsoever in being critical of the Flyers? I mean unless they did something nutty like making a mascot for children, of course.

You think every coach is always doing great.
You think every coach is always doing horrible.

The Flyers would be in the playoffs if the season ended today. No one predicted that. But yeah, Torts deserves no credit & deserves to be fired.

The Flyers would have had the 2nd worst point % in the east if the season ended 2 weeks ago. But yeah, Torts deserves no blame and deserves to be resigned.

We can all make strawman arguments.

Would you not let Gritty score on you so he can bang your mom?

Some people are hard-wired to appeal to authority. It's just how they are based on their life experiences, line of work, personality (or lack thereof), etc. It's pretty pathetic.

Dude, stop.

All it would take is to even the playing field of games played for all teams in the East (especially the Metro) and the Flyers would be out.

There's so much context and nuance here you're purposely ignoring to push a false narrative.

Stop being so disingenuous all of the time.

1) No, I do not always think every coach is doing horrible. Only the ones who are doing horrible. And it's also become clear that a lot of their horror comes from following management directives to crank down offense in favor of defense.

2) Multiple people here, myself included, noted that the team could see a substantial bump from Couturier returning. On top of that, Riso and Staal being hurt forced the team to accidentally ice a better roster than they would be otherwise. It remains to be seen what having them on the ice for 40 minutes a game does.
