And Holloway was the best player that game. While Broberg took care of his business in his end. The rest of the blues got trashed.

*grumble grumble*
Meanwhile they had a 20.5% and 24% xGF and gave up the second and third most chances against on the team.

When an Oiler has that type of game, they're pretty close to getting death threats.

I’ve always been on team sign them before we spend on UFA. I’ve always said since we drafted Mcdavid and Draisaitl our Stanley cup chances hinge on how the rest of our prospects drafted afterwards pan out, and now on this team where we have 27 year old Mcdavid and 29 year old Draisaitl we only have what? Skinner and Bouchard?

Our roster has a lot more room for regression than it does progression with how it is constructed

Exactly. We can go for the cup, but I'm worried about 2-5 years from now. Ekholm will age out before McDavid and Drai will. Jackson says he wants to prioritize youth but I'm not seeing it. We are putting a lot of hope on O'Reilly, Savoie, and some long shots. It's nice to sign some older vets like Arvidsson for a good cost, but you need a core that we put those guys around. It's very hard to get that with signing and trades

The one thing that annoys me more and more I think about it was how little money we had once we Signed Skinner, Henrique and Arvidsson. That is 10 mill right there.

WE should have signed both Halloway and Broberg or figured out IF they were going sign with us. We could not match the offer sheets. Broberg wanted out but I believe if we had some money we could have kept Halloway but we waited too long. Yes, this is where posters say we would have had to trade player X--well what team do we send him to and what sugar would we have added?

I believe if we had shopped Broberg at the draft table we could have gotten more for him and than we got for him

I'd love if Emberson, Stetcher or Dermott got 2nd assists instead of 0 points

Give it some time for them to settle into regular roles.

You can't compare how EDM is rotating their new defense to how STL is utilizing Broberg.

Let's compare someone who makes 4.6M to guys making league minimum and also 4.6M that Oilers do not have

I think Broberg would have wanted to stay if there was a clear path on LD for him but we prioritized a 30 year old, 3rd pairing LD that will be gone this off season or next over a 23 year old, top 10 pick with top pairing upside.

What a waste of 5 years of development. They should have matched just on that merit alone and figured out the cap situation as the year went on.

This is the part that is crazy. Kulak should have been traded to open up room for Broberg. The cap diff, even at the 4.6 overpay, would have only been 1.9 M. You could have opened up that 1.9 difference relatively easily as well through another trade. Ideally, you would have been proactive, and traded Kulak earlier, and given Broberg the 2,75 from Kulak, which Broberg 100% would have taken in early July. So basically a straight swap of Broberg for Kulak, plus whatever assets you got from trading Kulak (although those would have been minimal).

Is what it is at this point, can't do anything about it. Lots of this is revisionist history though as well. Most were expecting Broberg to get squeezed and sign a cheap 1 or 2 year deal.

I wouldn't have expected an offer sheet on either player but I'm sure the team heard rumblings of it before it happened. Usually the offer sheet is a slight overpay but Broberg's was such an overpay that he needs to be at worst, a 2nd pairing Dman during the entirety of the contract to make it worth it. I guess that's a gamble the team wasn't able to take. Hopefully we can use the assets we received to find a long term solution on RD.

Neither Broberg nor Nurse have much high end skill or dynamism in their offence. Difference between Nurse and Broberg though, Broberg makes the right decision nearly every time. He passes when he’s supposed to pass, he shoots when he’s supposed to shoot, he holds when he’s supposed to hold. With Nurse it’s a crapshoot what decision he makes. Them Broberg 2nd assists rack themselves up when your playing the game smart, same as it does for McDavid.

Could not agree more with this post. I do not usually get annoyed at management decisions and just hope things work out for the best. But this decision on Broberg and Holloway has just left me shaking my head. It might all work out (I suppose), but they were not 2nd or 3rd round draft picks. They were 1st round picks. It's just stunning to me that they were left to go on their way.

Hope it’s not too serious for Broberg. It didn’t look gruesome but he was absolutely in a lot of pain.

I’ve caught a few Blues games out of curiosity this season, they’re a pretty good team. Part of me doesn’t like Brob or Holloway but I don’t hate them either, they’re decent young players trying to find their way. Hope he recovers nicely, these two get derailed by injury too much.
