OT: The Food & Drinks Thread (Part 5)

I checked a few grenadine ingredients and some don't even have any pomegranate juice. The one you mentioned sounds proper. I might just make some to see how it works out,very simple to do.


The ones I checked out are loaded with fructose and glucose,coloring, etc not even the real deal! WTF? how can you call something that doesn't even have the ingredient in it?

AKA Broadgrin in Norway and known as Marulk in Sweden. I had a great dinner in a place called Salt Stream fairly close to Narvik in Norway back in the 80s. The menu said Broadgrin (Breiflabb) and the meat is delicious. Many times in Sweden they cut of the head when they sell them as fresh because it is so ugly.

Steak is cooked a little more than I would've wanted to, but it was still delicious.

With fondant potatoes, a spring mix with a simple olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and mustard dressing and some wine.

I've had worse meals in my life.

Can’t help but notice that Laguiole knife — the man has refined taste.

In France, connoisseurs bring their own steak knives to restaurants and the folding version of Laguiole is the weapon of choice. However, they’re not easy to close and can be downright dangerous, so if you’re going to own some, I’d go for the non-folding kind.

They were a wedding present from my wife's aunt if I'm not mistaken. We forgot all about them for the first year of the marriage, but when we bought our house and found them in their original box, we started using them when we have a nice piece of meat. Excellent knifes for sure!

They are indeed ugly but then again who cares? was never intending to date it but to chop it up and devour it.:nod:

I’ve always liked well-designed cutlery — it’s something that will last you a lifetime if you buy quality.

Now, about how not to use sharp knives, I’d suggest you tag our good friend @Holystik. :laugh: Poor guy ended up in the emergency room thanks to a Japanese knife!

I worked for a friend who had a cafe in downtown Stockholm a stone throw away from a liberal arts uni and he and his partner were really busy at lunch. So when I had a late or a night shift I used to help them by cleaning tables, making mayo etc, take out food to their guests. When I moved to the US they gave me a very fine and expensive chef's knife, a Wüsthof Dreizack made in Solingen Germany. I brought it with me and I also bought a set of Japanese knives. I don't have any steak knives, those are with my ex who is a bigger steak eater than I am. I only eat tenderloin or ground beef. I can't stand fat, for instance if a steak has a piece of fat I cut it off. The worst was when I was a kid and they tried to force me to finish my dinner. They did not succeed. :)

It most definitely can, still have a set that got passed down from several generations ago. Just not a topic that I'd ever expect to discus here though, well maybe if we resided in the San Francisco area or Provincetown perhaps.;)

The perils of prep! Has anyone never been wounded? comes with territory. Hope he was not permanently damaged and going to an ER can not be fun. Never a bad thing to have an excellent first aid kit,some medical glue and sutures on hand.

Good knives, prefer German or Swiss. Have been surrounded by Japanese knives the last few decades and they were intended for the Japanese build and not someone of my size and girth.

Yes, tried to cut frozen cod with a dull knife and managed to almost cut off the left index finger top. Bled really bad but fixed it myself and then went on a fishing vacation to the Arctic Circle. It healed a bit weird given there were no stitches since I was in a hurry to catch the night train and when I touch the scar ever since it is a bit numb, probably cut off some nerves. After that I became more thorough when buying knives and especially keeping them sharp.

But why try to cut solid frozen fish,what was the urgency which led to an emergency? Thought Id'd try my hand at poetry,how'd I do?:laugh: Nerve damage or tendon/ligament is worse case scenario,certainly not going to bleed out from a severed finger. Still sucks though.

You could take a train to the Arctic circle it's that close? Always flew myself,but different continent of departure origin. Best fishing ever way up north! not overcrowded there where you went? I'd go with locals that have fishing rights and white man can not go unless with locals,same with hunting but not for me. Would watch and that,but brutal!imo.

Yes. There are freight trains going from the ion rich mines in Kiruna to Narvik which is the most northerly ice free port where boats take over. It is also not as cold as in Canada on the same latitude thanks to the gulf stream. It's plenty cold like -50 at times but the average temperature is lower than in Canada. For instance I am from the southern half of Sweden and it is still north of Churchill Manitoba, the town famous for their seasonal polar bears.

I assume it was very expensive (Norway is very expensive) so I gave the fisherman 200 sek and I got a giant bag of shrimps and we ate shrimps for 2-3 days.
 
Had a craving for a mocha buttercream frosted cake of all things. Used to get some great ones at a place called Gascon? near Belmont way back. Kind of looks like the one pictured,theirs not mine:laugh:

Pretty cool you people could/can get there without flights,unlike trying to get to Resolute or other communities like that. Everything in those areas are/were 3 times what is cost in the city. Great fishing and other unique foods one would never try without going to places like that:eek:
