That's a nice round!

Putting is probably my biggest strength. I'm 2 putts or less 95% of the time where I have a decent shot at sinking anything under 10'. Getting there in regulation is the harder part for me.
Thanks! It's just a simple City course so it's not like I'm ready to go pro anytime soon

Nonetheless it's the best round I've had there in 5 years of league and many other rounds growing up.

In other news… golf game is really coming together. Back in the single digit handicap (hovering around 8) and getting pretty consistent. Even my ‘bad’ days im only slipping to the 83-85 area and it usually a simple set of bad shots or a mental lapse that usually causes those rounds. My round of the season was last week where I pulled off a 75 (+5). Most things just clicked except when I hit one shot in the water. Earlier today, I took in 9 holes and flirted with an under par round (easy par 36 course). I doubled the 9th to push me to 37.

Probably most encouraging for me, I’m finally getting some distance (in general) but really on some drives now too. I’ve never been a big hitter and my focus this season has been getting <200 dialed (still weaker in the 35-75 range). Even not trying to gain a ton of distance… I’m touching 290ish about once or twice a round and getting to 270 consistently (altitude so getting some help). This is a solid 30 more than earlier this season. I figure when I focus more on that next year I can gain a bit more (and I’d still like to get my 9 iron to 150-155… stuck around 142-144). I haven’t seen the scoring results come in from the extra distance quite yet, but starting to find myself in ‘easier’ situations to try for birdies instead of just targeting pars. Not executing at the moment, but it feels close.

Overall if I even settle in right here, I’m pretty happy. I guess you really can improve if you hit your job and basically play golf 5-6 days a week. Who knew?
I’ve been golfing a lot more lately as well. I’m really trying to hit a sub 90 round before the summers over. But ironing out my consistency is hard with the time I have. Also it doesn’t help that I only want to play and not go to the range and practice my sand shots and what not.

I shot my best round at league last night. 34 (-2) with a bogey on 9.

Putting is the hardest part of the game for me but I was draining them yesterday.
Yeah when my friends and I golf we track our putts per hole. And it really puts into perspective how much putting will hamper or help your score.

I'm really not a huge fan of the range. I do it a couple times a week, but I find I get in my own head sometimes. I legit top the ball 100x more on the range than I do on the course.

I'm lucky that my city course is empty in the middle of the day and I can play legit practice rounds. Throw out 2-3 balls and play different types of shots with different distances. Also helps the staff knows me and I can just walk on to pretty much any open hole and get going for unlimited time.

My biggest issue, as with everyone I’m sure, is the sand. I’m useless there

I also need a new driver. It’s my driver from high school and I can tell that my flex isn’t nearly stiff enough for 27 year old me

Well then… simply don’t hit it there!

Sand is one area where I’ve never really had issues. As long as we aren’t talking links style bunkers, I’m usually good. Even then I can work my way through it without too much of an issue. Must just be something to my natural swing that works with it.

My irons and chipping are my best part of my game for sure. I can make up pretty well for any bad drives through that which is nice. My putting is all over the place though

My friends and I will sometimes play a game called Snakes (3 putts) Camels (hit into a bunker) and Ducks (hit into the water).

Keep track of your total and whomever has the most at the end of the round loses.

Oh that’s cool. I’ll have to bring that up next time we play.

Sand should be an easy up and down. Water is an automatic stroke penalty. Seems odd to count those the same.

You have to take putting counts with a grain of salt. Its easy to blame your putter for a 2 putt or 3 putt but how close to the hole where you? Did you put your approach to the proper side of the hole?

The problem could just as easily be your wedge/approach game. You could hit every green but leave a 40 foot putt each time. It's easy to say "I had 36 putts so I need to start making some of those!" But in reality the make percentage is basically 0 on those putts.

It's also just as easy to miss a green, chip it to 3 feet and think your putter is on fire when you finish with 27 putts.

Obviously there’s context but if you consistently 3 putt that’s probably an are of concern. I think for someone of my skill level and everyone I golf with, we can, with somewhat consistency, get the ball on within 20-25ft. So for me 3 putting is a typically a backbreaker.

Not to be rude, but no, you are not putting the ball 20/25 feet away each green. That again falls into the easy to blame putter routine instead of wedge/iron game.

The best PGA tour pros average in the low 30 foot range for all approaches into the green.

That was supposed to be 30-35, typo. But also with where I’m at in my game I’m usually getting on the green in 3/4 shots but from pretty close to the green. Could also just be mis judging the length of my putts.

I’m also not saying that everything is down to the putter either. I’m terrible driving/off the box which is the biggest issue in my game. Well outside of sand. I have the most confidence in my iron game, it’s what I hit the most consistent of my clubs and it generally can get me into solid areas of the course.

Gotcha yeah, that makes sense! And if you are three putting from 10 feet then obviously that a problem! (not saying you are, but thats different than three putting from 50 feet)

Golf has so many areas to work on and the closer you can get to the hole the better! So many people work on (and blame) the driver/putter but don't touch the wedge game.

I should also add, I hit my irons consistently for someone who’s in my skill range, not generally

Obviously being a shooter in the 90’s there’s a general lack of consistency in all areas and reigning in that consistency is tough. I’m hoping that throughout the next couple years I can more consistently shoot 45/45 instead of 55/40, etc.

I judge my <150 (even 200) yard in game by how many times that ends up 3 shots or less. If I can get that to 14/15/16 times a round out of 18… I’ll score very well. If I’m 10-12, I’m scrambling the whole round in a mess. Putts don’t mean as much to me as that ideal. Purely 150 in should be an approach shot to chip or putt to 3-5’, last putt.

On totally different topic, I just gotta message that I'm getting a trophy for 10,000 posts. Who do I give my home address to send that trophy?

Not sure where to ask this, so I'll post in here.

It's already the 8th of August. If we want to have our annual off-season game of +/- over before the start of the regular season we should probably get it going.

Anyone remember who normally starts the game? I can probably start it myself later tonight but didn't want to go stepping on toes and stealing someone else's spotlight.

The last two years they were started by @Murzu , but over the years it has been made by a few different users. So I'd think it's pretty fair game.
