If I'm Stevie I look to flip Fabbri or Holl. But that's about it. I think the best deals for the team going forward unless we are trading expiring contracts for picks, are generally gonna be deals that are made over the offseason.

I know there’s still ~24hrs until the deadline but is Yzerman going to do anything?

I’m not seeing much less out of there unless he’s got someone off the board he’s working on acquiring

Honestly no deal is better than a bad one. I rather be sellers. Kane can fetch a 1st rounder easily. I think our absolute ceiling is the 2nd round. Why not just gather more assets? Who cares about a non playoff streak. Yzerman said he wants to eventually build a team to compete for a Stanley cup.

The players, coaches, management and ownership all care. Most of the fans too, especially the casuals.

No whispers of anything and at this point anyone available I don't think would make much of an impact.

Disappointing because I'm not sure what the long term goal is here for defense. Not really adding to the cap next year, some guys like Perron come off the books but you have to re-sign Raymond, Mo, and hopefully Kane. Don't really have the money to overpay for a UFA (and maybe after Holl and Chiarot that's a good thing). They clearly don't trust the farm guys because we have 2-3 awful defenseman playing right now. So is management just going to accept that the D is going to be abysmal until the 3 defensemen you drafted in the top 50 last year are ready in 4 years?

So much "dead cap" on the team between Copp, Petry, Holl, Chiarot, Husso. Would've loved to see a Sean Walker like trade where we get a good player and move a bad contract for a 1st.

Yzerman could sign Sean Walker, at next summer, for only money.

Without losing the 1st.

One thing to keep in mind: Yzerman didn't put anyone on waivers and the team is at the 23 man roster limit and no one is waiver exempt.

Any trade to bring in a body will have to send a body out. Not an insurmountable issue but Yzerman doesn't have much roster flexibility.

I should add, hee could gain flexibility by putting Larkin on LTIR and kick the can down the road but Im not sure he wants to do that as Larkin would be ineligible to play for 10 games/24 days.

For almost 99% sure, Yzerman's possible trade will be quantity for quality.

So he doesn't have to waive anyone.

Would anyone be interested in carrier from Nashville. Heard he’s either extension or they are moving him. Could move someone like Matta + a 2nd for him with a 3-4 year extension. Plays 20 mins a night and could fit next to chiarot/Ed going forward

Well I'd just double back to your original...

More picks/roster spots/cap create a lot of flexibility even if you just get 3rd and 4th rounders for guys on 1 year deals. No a reason to keep some guys on 1-year deals if you aren't sure you'll make the playoffs or have them long-term.

I really don't think more mid round picks help all that much, and the roster can be expanded the moment the trade deadline passes, iirc, as long as you have the cap space - which we do. As for hanging onto them, you do it not to tank morale and the season. We are in a playoff spot right now. Unless someone overpays or we're making space for other moves we're just not dealing guys who are playing every night.

I mean, we could, but damn it would be out of character for GMs in general across the league.

Still have those contracts... and doesn't help this year. ( I think that's his point. )
And you're also competing with other teams next year in UFA and overpaying vs signing an extension now. Between that and moving a bad contract (and the help this year) it's a big difference.

Yeah but most teams don't lose their best player and cough up a 10-point lead over other non-playoff teams coming into a TDL.

NYI loss was bad. But after that we played the best team in the league, didnt convert on our chances and then got suffocated. After that far and away the best home team in the league with their superstars playing outta their mind.

When looking at streaks you gotta take into account who you played. If they get the same results against ARI or BUF, then we do have a big problem on our hands.

And I wanna see how PHI gets through this upcoming ordeal of 2x BOS, 2x FLA, 2x TOR, NYR, CAR, TB over the next 3 weeks. We only need 1 of TB, PHI and NYI to stumble.

My guess is PHI falls out of the playoffs and we end up WC2. Play Florida in the first round and get absolutely destroyed, likely only scoring one or two goals the whole series. It'll be a good lesson for the young guys.

Honestly, if we could hold onto WC1 I could see us taking any other team to 6/7 and possibly sneaking into round 2. Florida is gonna wreck our shit. I still wouldn't want to play a healthy DRW in round 1 but Florida is the perfect combination of our weaknesses.

Said every single team that wanted hanifin..............................................

This type of thought process really needs to go off a cliff and die a violent death because it never works out.
Statistically, very few deadline acquisitions hit UFA. They either re-sign or their rights are traded and then they resign.

The whole "We'll just sign them in the summer!" is a loser mentality.

Free agency is no longer the avenue to acquire players in the league. If you look at Yzerman's time in Tampa, he didn't start swinging big trades until they had already made the playoffs and advanced decently for a few years. I don't like it, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Yzerman not make any real impactful trades until after Danielson, Kasper, Cossa/Augustine, and Edvinsson are on the team and contributing.

I've been saying all season that the Holl contract (3 years) indicated Yzerman's timeline of when the team will be ready to start pushing for the cup. I still believe that is his timeline. I think it's a missed opportunity to not use some assets to try and push a few rounds into the playoffs, but Yzerman is still apparently sticking to that schedule.

I'm totally fine with that. I had us in 6th place in the division.
