I think most agree that if we get Strome, it would be best for him to be sent back to junior next season (Barring an amazing performance at camp). What do you think about Hanifin though? Is he ready physically to take the next step next season? Should Hanifin make the team if we draft him?

Next season we could have:

Rielly-Polak
Gardiner-Hanifin
Percy-Robidas

Hanifan would have a easier time transitioning to the NHL earlier.

I would say this based mostly off the fact that the NCAA is filled with big 21-23yos.
So I would say he is already used to playing with the bigger, seasoned men.

If we sign Strome or Hanifan, I would rather see them in the AHL, but that could be a wasted year and is debatable.

Would love our Marlies to get a year with either of those 2 and build some chemistry. How sweet would it be to have all our young guys coming up as buddies already?

wow, the poll is almost dead even.

gotta go with BPA. and that player is hanifin. yes strome is a good center but BPA trumps positional need.

Yeah because we have so many good ones. Rielly, Gardiner. It ends there. I'm high on Percy.... but there's not much after that.

Edit: Not saying I pick him over Strome or Marner (I can't decide...), but he's going to be a stud.

Finn, loove, valiev, grannberg all have good potential just like Percy.

Rielly is currently playing the right side!

But no way we draft him, if both are available they draft the better player who is Strome in my opinion.

Yeah, it's the Leafs, we have to factor in the likelihood of them making the wrong decision.

Who should they pick? Hanifin. Who will they pick? Strome.

If only we had two top 5 picks or even top 10 then I would be ok with taking Hanifin. It just seems like such a waste to pick D with so much offense on board.

Still possible we get a top 10 pick in a trade. Moving Kessel could score us a top 10 pick, maybe from New Jersey or Florida (12th currently, so just outside of top 10). Drafting Hanifin and Barzal would be incredible.

If we could grab a second high pick, I think I'd go for Marner and Rantanen. I think that would be my dream draft, other than McDavid.

I'd take Hanafin. I love Strome and think he could be a #1C in the future BUT.... I like the chances of Hanafin becoming a #1D more. I get that he is an american and does not understand what it means to be a Maple Leaf. But I believe he understands what it means to be an NHLer and at the end of the day I think that is an important trait. (That being said what I am saying is based upon my opinion so take it with a grain of salt.)

Haha Edm never had the D prospects that we already have like Rielly, Gardiner and Percy in the system tho, so it's not like our cupboards are completely bare.

The only way we get a choice is if we get passed by Edmonton and draft 3rd cuz Hanifin is sliding past 3rd. Kid is a talent, no doubt, and according to many a level above Strome. Who knows how this all works out 5 years from now but 3 major things Leafs gotta do;

1. Take the BPA
2. Build from the net out
3. Stock up on defence now as they take longer to develop.

If you have the 3rd pick or some how Hanifin slips to 4, you take him and run with it. Hope we can pick up our Center with the next pick. This 1st round is deep and we've got at least one more pick if not a few more by the time the dust settles.

What has really hurt the Leafs over the last few years has been the lack of a #1c and consistent goaltending. A true number 1 centre would change the dynamic of the team. They have to be able to have players capable of going up against the likes of a Kopitar or Getslaf, Malkin, etc. The Leafs are in a position now to draft a big talented centre with what is available on board for them. They have to seize this opportunity.

There's a 6'2 and 6'5 center available next season. One is rated as the top guy right now and the other is rated in the top 5. This isn't the only opportunity we'll have

There will also be some good no.1 defenceman in the next draft in chychrun and day. What's your point? There's no guarantee where they'll pick next year when the lottery odds become even greate4

You couldn't understand the point? All the information is there, it really isn't hard, especially since you just made the exact same point using dmen.

No ****... Btw, it was a rhetorical question, the fact that you don't realize that baffles me.
