The Ottawa PBP guy floated the idea that that it may have to do with password sharing or a shared account. Don't even know how that would work because I'm not a degenerate gambler but it might explain the severity of the punishment without Pinto actually having gambled on NHL games.

He's a good kid but what a mess this is for him. He'll be back in time for the playoff push on a pretty sweet contract tho, so that's interesting.

Didn't Gretzky's wife get in trouble years ago with gambling, while Wayne was in Arizona?

I think at the time the possibility that she was laying bets for Wayne was raised and I'm pretty sure the pro athletes that gamble (a lot of them) also have someone act as a proxy for them. The trick is just to not get caught.

If he wasn’t betting, I wonder if he was feeding into to friends in regards to certain bets. Or maybe even in regards to him?

Why punish the guy? Clearly the NHL loves gambling. They sold their souls for it. Most professional sports teams are run by degenerate gamblers. So what is the message to the player here? Peddle this crap to the normies but don't you dare indulge in this yourself!

Anybody that peddles this poison is a grifter in my opinion. I shudder every time I see Gretzky (Operation Slapshot LOL) in a gambling ad.

If the kid has an addiction, I hope he gets the help he deserves. Considering the loose corporate morals on display nowadays he was a victim that was groomed by the proliferation of gambling culture.

Unless there is more credible details out there other than what the League has put out, this is quite silly. If he didn't bet on NHL games, then why is he suspended for such a long time?

I am sick of these gambling ads every. waking. minute. during games. We see the league's stars in gambling ads all the time. Maybe this Mickey Mouse league should get better sponsors.

It's not stupid to gamble (even illegally), it's stupid to get caught.

Ya, and wasn’t there others, like Tocchet I think and a few others

Maybe I wasn't clear, so I'll use a couple of examples off the longest suspensions in NHL history list.

Torres - suspended 41 games for a predatory blow on Silfverberg. Torres had previously 9 previous supplemental disciplines so they really came down on him.

Bertuzzi - 33 games for breaking Steve moores neck. Clear intent to injur. Match penalty assessed. Moore never played again

Simon - 30 games for intentionally stomping on Ruutu's leg. Intent to injure match penalty assessed.

Simon - 25 games for two hand stick chop to the face of Hollweg. Intent to play match penalty assessed.

Boulerice - 25 games for cross checking Kesler directly in the head. Match penalty assessed.

McSorley - 23 games for what we all know he did.

I was clearly speaking to intent to injure plays, not incidental injuries that occur during the normal course of play.

Additionally, this is not a situation where the player was betting on, and directly influencing the outcome of a hockey game. That's a theoretical situation that does not apply to the point I'm making. I don't however disagree that this would be a legitimacy issue for the NHL if it were to happen.

That Pinto was assessed more than anyone on this list not named Torres is frankly inexcusable.
from the statements it looks like he was sharing inside info to a 3rd party and making money on the bets

41 games is a lot, but you gotta wonder when he doesn't appeal and everyone is OK with the suspension. Did he "throw" a game last season?

Because there are a number of options for NHL related betting that don't include betting on games themselves.

Maybe Brady let Matthews injury details slip last playoffs and he placed a prop bet on his performance.

Maybe he gave inside info to a third party that used it for bets.

Apparently Ott PBP suggested it might be sharing an account with someone that bet on NHL games.

For the integrity of the game, any association with making actual bets needs to be punished severely.

I don't believe he threw a game. It's an account sharing issue. He violated terms of service. Blatantly. Profited and now has been suspended. He is fortunate it's not longer as crazy as that sounds.

I do believe suspension is overkill, but I understand the reason it's so long. Still ironic this gets a guy suspended more then say two handing a guy in the face. Weird world we live in

If not for gambling, how would you get people to watch a Blue Jackets/Coyotes game? Like outside of fans of those teams?
Gotta draw more people in so the cap can go up and everything can grow forever.
At least that’s my current theory.
If the NHL actually hired competent marketing teams and fired Gary Bettman so franchises didn't need to be in markets where the state they're in also really don't seem to want them would be a good start, fixing the awful tv coverage the sport gets, there's so much that they can fix to make the fan base grow.

Friedman said he had a “shared” account through a sports betting app or something.

Which also sounds weird because who would you be sharing it with? Certainly not your buddies.
His parents perhaps.

After watching Bruce Garrioch on TSN, what I think happened here was betting on NHL games occurred on an online betting account registered to Pinto. It was flagged and investigated. My guess here is Pinto denied placing the bets himself instead blaming a friend or family member who had access to the account. The NHL bought his story and suspended him for 41 games for being stupid enough to allow someone else access to his account. Had they not bought it they suspend him for life similar to what mlb did with Pete Rose.

Even if Pinto did bet on the NHL, comparing him to Pete Rose is really something.

Pete Rose bet on MLB games, including Reds games, when he was the manager of the Reds. He reportedly spent 8-10k a day gambling on baseball while still managing. And the MLB was reasonably convinced he specifically bet against the Reds.

And Rose’s ban became a lifetime ban because he’s an asshole (that’s the short version).

Pinto isn’t under contract right now. He deserves to be punished but that’s a bizarre comparison.

In 2020 Peter Beyer, a minor league player with the A’s, got a 3 year ban for betting on baseball, including multiple A’s games. (They also said he obstructed the investigation.)

Kind of odd. They said he didn't bet on NHL games so I assume he made non-NHL bets, why is that not okay?
