What would the cap hit look like for a 1 mil deal signed today vs game 42?

So long as it's not a multi-year deal and there's no signing bonus the contract shouldn't be inflated. The team would only need cap space equal to the pro-rated portion of the contract remaining.

Pinto's QO would have been $874,125. So they would need that much in pro-rated cap space available if the team still honors the QO amount. The lowest contract allowed is $775,000. Note as of this moment the team is only tracking to have roughly $90k in pro-rated cap space available when Pinto is eligible to play.

I said before the announcement was handed down that Pinto would get a harsher punishment than the Blackhawks for covering up sexual assault for a decade.

The NHL truly has its priorities in order. What a circus league. Clear Gary and his empire of dinosaurs out of here.
This phrasing is so weird. You think of an organization the same way as people?

Is Shane Pinto being punished harsher than Stan Bowman, John Quenneville, and John McDonough? The actual human people who were in charge and did nothing and not the concept of an organization.

He's not. One good thing Bettman actually has done is not reinstate them. He even said he might in July, but held out meeting them. They had some time to speak to the league, but nobody has tried to hire them yet and Bettman has to approve them to be rehired. They've been essentially suspended indefinitely and hopefully permanently. So yeah, the Blackhawks, as in people who were mainly responsible, are being punished worse.

Out of everything surrounding this story, what bothers me most is that in the eyes of the NHL, this is more egregious than almost every other suspension that can or has been levied against on-ice play.

That's f***ed up.

I just got home, didn't have time to read the news and I'm not sure exactly why the league doubled down on Pinto so hard. But is it maybe because they fear that players stepping over this line, could soon find themselves betting on NHL games? Because that's something the league absolutely can't have. It'd kill all the credibility if people thought games were rigged, which is a bigger issue than some player delivering a bad hit by accident.

I haven't read all 27 pages, just the first few, but he got 41 games for betting when he never bet on NHL games (based on the NHL's tweet) and someone else brought up that in the CBA they're allowed to bet on other sports (maybe that's wrong?).

That makes no sense why he'd get suspended then.

He probably gambled while at a Sens facility. The NFL has rules like that, where even if you’re betting on other games you can’t gamble at team facilities.

It’s like if a company allowed their employees to smoke weed in their free time but fire people who smoke in the office.

So gambling isn’t the fault of the gambler, because gambling advertisements are different?

But drinking advertisements they don’t have the same kind of effect on weak willed people.

Right, gotcha. Absolutely genius take. I need to get in on this mind control advertisements that draftkings figured out. Make everyone do my bidding, because that’s the real issue here.

It’s not like the NHL has never suspended anyone for life due to gambling before the sports betting rules were relaxed in Canada.

Yes they’re different, if alcohol ads gave you ways to get booze immediately for free as a promo, rewarded people with more booze for streaks of drinking at least one bottle per day, and specifically targeted first-time drinkers with promos they would rightfully get crucified in court. I don’t know why the idea of gambling ads needing to follow the same legal guidelines as other vices makes you so very very upset.

wow, but its not unexpected, I think its a rule for the whole area of Ottawa that nothing can ever be under budget lol

Some people in this thread are totally out to lunch

In a word. Yes

This is awesome. Now BetMGM can tell the Sens when Pinto is at the strip club, or at Whole Foods.

There aren't that many things that can ruin a league. This is one of them. Your last sentence is exactly why.

I don’t know if you remember or not, but I said that blaming Molson’s sponsorship (or even team ownership) on NHL players drinking problems is just as ridiculous as blaming sports betting advertisements on players choosing to break the rules around sports betting.

And that’s just true. You can double down, triple down, try to change the argument into something else, you can say and do whatever you want.

It won’t change the fact that you’re wrong. Players breaking sports betting rules are not the fault of sports betting advertisements.

It’s fully the fault of the player.

Sponsorships and advertisements are irrelevant

He probably saw those hundreds of bet ads and figured it was OK.

He probably wasn't aware or because he legit felt sorry and issued a legit apology knows that maybe just maybe he did f*** up? It's probably something In nhl contracts, he probably didn't read it, maybe his agent didn't either... yes it's just gambling but, the optics of pro players betting on games is bad and that's what it comes down to.

Lol integrity of the game being ruined by betting...

I guess all the other shit doesn't ruin the integrity as much as betting does. Like just a random example - two teams trying to employ Mitchell Miller, you think that hurt the integrity at all?

The fact the NHL cares little to nothing about that until it becomes a big issue when people rightfully say wtf vs gambling is hilarious.

I don't care for gambling at all and find it weird and kind of dumb to constantly see nhl broadcasts openly discussing the betting line etc but their hard line for what's right or wrong and what hurts or stains their integrity is f***ing comical.
If not for gambling, how would you get people to watch a Blue Jackets/Coyotes game? Like outside of fans of those teams?
Gotta draw more people in so the cap can go up and everything can grow forever.
At least that’s my current theory.

I don't disagree with what you're saying. Yes, the perception of rigging games would sink the league.

It is also fair to state that intent to injure plays have received less suspension time.

To be clear, the NHL as of today is prioritizing the punishment of a player for a gambling related infraction, over the actions of a player that were taken to knowingly injure another player, thereby removing them from active play and ultimately affecting the outcome of games.

It is this prioritization I largely take issue with.

Beyond that, there's the notable discrepancy in how the NHL tried to dissuade certain player actions. The league actively relies on minor monetary fines and single digit game suspensions for a number of unwanted actions. But this requires a heavier hand?

IDK man. Maybe I'm off base here, but plays that injure players, and increase the odds of someone losing their quality of life and ability to earn money, is to me a much bigger issue - both in perception and in actual consequences - than sports betting related infractions.

The timing of this is incredibly shady. The only unsigned RFA gets hit with a gambling suspension while his team is in cap hell unable to sign him? Now he gets suspended and they can get him for his QO?

One helluva lucky coincidence for the Sens
The AAV increases for each day missed, so it’s probably going to be his QO now
But May it’s different circumstances now, not sure

You'd at least need to take into account the likelihood of getting away with sports betting infractions vs. the likelihood of getting away with an attempt to injure during an NHL game. If Player A has a 99% chance of betting undetected and Player B has a 1% chance of assaulting a fellow player on the ice without any consequences, and the standard suspension for both betting and attempt to injure were the same (X games in both cases), which undesirable activity is more likely to be reduced or eliminated by the prospect of an X-game suspension?

Since, it seems that he did not bet on hockey, I woner if the suspension was for betting illegally. For example, somewhere sports betting is still illegal. Or with a non-licensed sportsbook/individual. Just a thought.
