I understand. But is there fine print saying NHL players can't bet on sports? Or anyone associated with the NHL? You can't bet on horses? I mean, Eddie O was always on the NBC horse races. There's no way he just watched it for fun.
Shane Pinto and the Ottawa Senators have both made statements accepting the suspension and supporting the NHL's rules on gambling. I don't sense a lawsuit from the NHLPA incoming.

Call me crazy, but I think there was an existing rule on the books, and he broke it.

Lol, this is too funny. NHL shoves gambling down everyone’s throats and then this. You can take a guy’s head off in a game, MAYBE get suspended but gamble?! Phew, half the season pal.

Seriously, I wanna make fun of the dude but it wasn’t even hockey. Like, f*** off league. I really don’t give a shit if a dude gambles on another sport. Maybe make ‘em report their wagers or somethin, I get the concern, but that’s absolute horseshit from a league shoving this crap down everyone’s throat. I’ll give you +150 that Pinto wins an appeal. Bet now on sportsfaker, get $10 free. Sportsfaker, “proud” sponsor of the NHL, hypocrisy, and naked greed.

LOL...NHL gets into bed with every sports gambling site under the sun and then has them rat out any players that use their service.

Ironic that the Sens helmet sponsor is Betway

EDIT: I posted this before reading much of the thread. Many others pointed this out before me.

I mean, had he sexually assaulted a player and covered it up for years it only would've been a fine.

Just sayin'.
You mean the Hockey Canada thing? It's really not fine, Formenton has not played a game since that broke. Which....sucks for Ottawa too because he was a hell of an up and coming player.

Pretty hypocritical by the NHL. If gambling is so bad why do I see an add every few minutes.
McDavid is on TV every other commercial for sports betting advertising in helmets yet you suspend someone for 41 games and allegedly didn’t even gamble on hockey.

How many compulsive gamblers want to watch hockey without having to have that shoved down their throats?
It’s almost like me as a fat guy going to Canadian tire to get windshield wipers and have to walk through a maze of chocolate and chips. They make it way to easy.
I’m sorry. But the NHL is in the wrong here but should be called out for it’s hypocritical thinking

Yes this is the most reasonable guess imo
the way Shane owned it, and we know he didn't bet on NHL games makes me think this is the case.
Because if he bet on the NFL and got suspended 41 games I sure as shit hope he wouldn't go down without a fight.

We do have a detail: he didn't bet on NHL "games." If he had a proxy put a bet on an NHL game; if he himself placed a bet on a non-game NHL outcome; if he made bets with an individual under a federal RICO indictment (recall Thomas Vanek getting in some hot water a few years back); if he bet on an illegal activity (bum fights, dog fights, cock fights) -- the NHL needed to act.

Still doesn't change the league's hypocrisy of promoting *and* acting righteous about the societal rot of organized gambling.
Well if they're going to suspend a guy for half a season, "no further comment" on what he did is pretty ridiculous. Pretty big difference between providing insider tips to people and if he put $100 on the Chiefs-Chargers game from his couch. Is this a criminal investigation or a bad policy? The NHL does itself no favors by giving zero details and then saying it will not comment on the situation.

I'm ok with this. Gambling is dumb in general (if you can't control the outcome and guarantee a win there are too many luck factors involved) but man this sucks as a Senators fan, get him some pych treatment asap then trade him with a sweetener.

Would have been a lot funnier if the Senators announced they signed him yesterday then this dropped today.

So he didn’t wager but passed info to someone who did? Safe to assume this dates back to last year? Can’t imagine he’d have much to pass along this year.

41 games for betting on non-nhl related activities

But 2 millions fine on covering sexual assault
If its what I think it is the 41 games are justified. My gut feeling is he was providing inside info related to the Sens to a 3rd party so they could bet on games.

Oh sorry, it's hard to keep the hockey sexual assault scandals straight. I was actually referring to the Chicago Blackhawks only being fined $2 million by Bettman after covering up the assault on Kyle Beach for years.

I've seen guys purposely stomp on another player's ankle with their skate blade and get suspended for half as many games as Pinto. I've seen guys target the head with their hits, lead with their knees, and slash people in the head with their sticks and get fewer or no games. I've seen zero consistency in the reffing of the league, leading to questions about potential corruption. But god forbid a person who is not under contract legally bet on a sport he doesn't play. Better suspend him for half a season because it "looks bad".

Never change NHL.

Maybe I'm missing information, and if so I'll change my stance at the time it's released, but for now this is it.

From Bruce Garrioch’s article:

“League sources say Pinto’s online gambling account in the United States was flagged by a company that is a partner of the league because of unusual activity and it contacted the NHL’s head office two weeks ago.”

That is a plausible scenario.

With that said…. To me that would be just as bad as making the bet himself.

I think that would result and even harsher suspension. If not lifetime.
yeah I think insider trading is straight up "lifetime ban, enjoy the khl" territory. Match Fixing is the Number 1 worry when it comes to sports gambling. It basically killed the popularity of Boxing in the United States, which used to be a much bigger deal. The NHL is doing itself no favors here to assuage anybody's concerns by not giving a lick of info.
