My favorite part of this whole thing is that the senators helmet sponsor for its home games is an online gambling site.

- Pinto sitting on the bench during training camp sees the new sponsor
- Hmm, nice they match the first $100 you deposit
- Pinto bets $100 on Aaron Rodgers to throw 300 yards week one
- Knock on door: Gary Bettman standing there with handcuffs

Or, hear me out:

Promote gambling to fans of the game.
And prohibit the players whom effect the outcome of those bets from being involved.

I don't get why this is such an issue
I understand. But is there fine print saying NHL players can't bet on sports? Or anyone associated with the NHL? You can't bet on horses? I mean, Eddie O was always on the NBC horse races. There's no way he just watched it for fun.

Hopefully Friedman or another insider will explain this because I can't come up with any reason on my own, beyond they don't want their own players falling prey to the dangers and addiction of gambling, but fans on the other hand...
That would make about as much sense as suspending a guy 41 games for ordering a gin and tonic.

Everyone on a message board with no details of the incident: THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE JOKE IM DONE WITH THE NHL

Guy who did it and is suspended half a season: yeah that's fair. my bad.
We do have a detail: he didn't bet on NHL "games." If he had a proxy put a bet on an NHL game; if he himself placed a bet on a non-game NHL outcome; if he made bets with an individual under a federal RICO indictment (recall Thomas Vanek getting in some hot water a few years back); if he bet on an illegal activity (bum fights, dog fights, cock fights) -- the NHL needed to act.

Still doesn't change the league's hypocrisy of promoting *and* acting righteous about the societal rot of organized gambling.
